Johnny Depp's NIGHT STALKER To Be Directed By Edgar Wright

Deadline is reporting that Johnny Depp, fresh off the big screen version of Dark Shadows, will be working with Scott Pilgrim vs. the World director Edgar Wright on bringing reporter Carl Kolchak, of The Night Stalker, to film.

Says Deadline in an exclusive report, "Wright, best known for directing Shaun of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, comes aboard before the studio has set a writer, and he will oversee and shape the project with Depp from the ground floor. As Deadline revealed, the film took root at the studio last summer, borne out of Depp and Dembrowski’s fond memories of the original 70s movie and series that starred Darren McGavin. He covered crime for a tabloid and his cases always led to supernatural perpetrators that included zombies, vampires, werewolves and aliens. Of course, neither his editor nor anyone else would believe him or allow him to run what seemed like outrageous stories. But Kolchak would put himself in grave danger each episode. David Kennedy will be exec producer of the film."

McGavin's Kolchak appeared in the 1972 TV movie The Night Stalker, followed by 1973's The Night Strangler and then, a year later, in a 20-episode TV series. ABC recently rebooted the show with Frank Spotnitz of The X-Files.

Really wish they would bring this to television instead of the movies.

To this day, The Night Stalker is one of my favorite TV shows. Nothing beats old, classic horror.

Edgar Wright doing supernatural mystery with the the king of the comedic action set-piece himself? Yeah okay.

Whoa. I love all of Edgar Wrights films, but Depp is NOT who I would have used to replace Darren McGavin. Hope he can capture that great determined/befuddledness that Kolchak had.

I think Depp too...can win a leg lamp with this part. I think he's a great choice for the role and I always loved the original. It was right up there with Night Gallery.

How many on here remember Night Gallery?

But.. in a casting self decision by Depp, Johnny is playing the Native American sidekick of the monster killing reporter, Geronimo, and jumps out of every scene whenever someone says his name.

Sounds cool.

I rather see Robert Downey Jr. as Kolchak thou.
He fits in the role perfectly.

I remember one episode of Night Gallery. In an old mansion, and the painting had a cemetary outside the house. and every time he looked at the painting, it looked like a zombie was climbing out of the graveyard and coming closer and closer to the house.

Funny by the way how the vampire in the Night Stalker tv movie has the same name (Janos Skorzeny) like the main villain in 80s Werewolf tv-series?;)

This was one of the greatest shows on TV ! For its time, was truly scary and believe it was Chris Carter's inspiration for the "X-Files".

Agree with above....Downey as Kolchak, would own it.

I remember that show. The first episode, the one with the guy who kills his uncle to inherit his stuff and the graveyard painting, scared the crap out of me!

I'm thinking team-up: Johnny Depp as Kolchak takes on Johnny Depp as vampire Barnabas Collins!

@ AlexDeLarge87 ..you're right, both shows had a character named Janos Skorzeny. the writers of the tv series "Werewolf" named Chuck Conners' character Janos Skorzeny as an homage to the "Nightstalker" tv series of the '70s...good catch my friend.

Yeah, what was the pitch for that new series? Let take the original premise, but make it less interesting and take away all the charm and humor?

I don't think I've ever seen the movies or TV show.

This sounds like it would work better as a TV series, which they're already working on. There's only so many monsters you could fit into one movie.

With Edgar Wright and Johnny Depp on board it could turn out great though.

is there anything cool out there that the overrated hack Johnny Depp doesn't want to befoul? I wouldn't mind seeing a Night Stalker movie if the right people were involved. Depp isn't one of them. I'm sick and damn tired of seeing him in everything.
