Chatting shortly with Fred Topel of Screen Junkies at a Q&A for a screening of Seed of Chucky, Don Mancini, creator of the notorious slasher doll and screenwriter for all five films, disclosed minor details for the promised Child's Play remake. The last we heard from the film was back in January, via Horrorbid, where Universal reportedly gave the green light, but pre-production had yet to begin.

There’s obviously room to continue this series of Chucky films, but is reboot the only way you’re thinking of going at this point?
"I’m personally open to other things but I think that’s what the studio wants, because this movie didn’t do very well so I think the feeling is that Chucky’s viability, his future is in the more straightforward horror vein. I was talking about the rights issues before, I don't think it’s necessarily what we’ll end up doing as a strict remake. I think we’ll reboot it in the sense that it will just be more conventionally scary and it will only be Chucky and we won’t have Tiffany and Glen, but it won’t necessarily be a strict remake."

Will you be able to use some of those original ideas you had for Child’s Play?
"It’s one of the things we’re talking about. I can’t say too much about it but one of the things we’re alluding to, it’s one of the things that we’re talking about. I would like that, the psychological aspect of it. You seem to remember it very well."

Losing the voodoo, using the kid’s blood to bring the doll to life…
"We’d definitely keep the mythology of Charles Lee Ray, the idea of Chucky being possessed by a killer rather than what you’re referring to, that Chucky was the embodiment of this boy’s id."

In the 22 years since Child’s Play, have you had new ideas for how an origin of Chucky could be?
"Yes. We’ve explored a number of different possible scenarios. I’m definitely pushing to go in a very disturbing direction because I feel like if we’re going to go back to it being a horror movie, let’s make it really disturbing."

Are you planning to direct as well?
"Yeah, I mean, I hope so. That’s what we’re talking about."

Would we still recognize the Good Guys doll or would you reinvent that too?
"Oh yes, I think we would do a slight redesign on him but not so much that you wouldn’t. He’s got to be recognizably Chucky. I think we’ll take the scars away."

Would Brad Dourif still be the voice?
"If I have anything to say about it, and David [Kirschner] and Corey [Sienega] too."

DCMF - Though I'm not gonna miss Chucky's seed, I sure am gonna miss his Bride 'Tiffany', who actress Jennifer Tilly brought to life with her unmistakable voice. And though I always felt the whole concept could use some humor, you gotta admit Seed Of Chucky got way out of hand. Hopefully they can revive the most notorious slasher in history we all know & love. The remake anyhow, is currently slated for a 2011 release. What do you think?

I cant say that I'm a fan of horror remakes at least the ones in recent years but I can get behind this one somewhat because The man who conceived the original idea seems to be the main creative force behind this reboot/remake.

I'm a HUGE Horror fan and honestly, the way this Classic character has gone, I think its about time a remake or a "Good" story comes to the surface. Chucky deserves to scare the crap out of people at least one more time.

lol this movie would bomb horribly if they remade it. the only way it would succeed is if they made it a comedy, having chucky being punted across rooms.

@teabag

i know i seen horror movies when i was young and they never effected me at all. them kids now grown up who murder James Bulger was pure evil.

Childs Play 3 has nothing to do with with the murder. the media just found out they may or may not watched Child Play 3 so they think it influence people to murder.

I think the only way this would be good is if they change the look of the doll/voice completely and have someone find the doll like in a attic or something then it gets possesed

why a remake..just do a sequel. ignore some of the movies that didn't make sense and just continue from that point.

That's weird. I watched the new NOES the other day and I was thinking about that they already remade Meyers, Jason, and Freddy... Chucky is naturally the best one. FYI Halloween was the only good real good remake.

Personally, i REALLY LOVED the first remake of Texas Chainsaw Massacre with Jessica Biel. But all slasher/horror remakes went down hill from there IMHO. This series however SHOULD get remade in a creapy gore heavy frightning way with shitloads of suspense. Kind of like Dead Silence but... "good". The series quickly became a cartoon of itself and should be taken back to the grown up table. Sadly, i really don't think the original team has what it takes to breath new life into their concept. Or else they would have done it a long time ago. Their last chapter was just sad. Everyone should know that a sequel about the crew that made the other films of the series, sucks ass as a concept. Although i did enjoy "Bride of Chucky" which seemed to be a spoof of the series, i've always been more fond of the concept rather than of the actual films. They're all a bit lackluster for my tastes.

@Shaman

I did forget about TCSM. It was the first slasher body count movie to get remade in that genre that I can remember. Of course the actual series didn't go to well with Mathew McCanaughey and Renee Zellweger. Of course knowing me and bad movies, I still really liked it an thought it was hilarious. But yeah, the remake was still creepy.

SeaOtterRodgers- Haha!! Yeah, the series of films from before they successfully remade it wasn't up my alley either LOL

Still, it was kinda epic to see Denis Hopper in his sheriff getup, goin' apeshit on a tree trunk with his chainsaw :))

I like Chucky I mean the first two Child's Plays were the best the last 3 were OK to watch but I was on IMDb and look what the listed for the Child's Play remake, but still a lot of horror remakes were horrible

Sh*t i rememder when scary movies were actully scary. Now there just to see tities and teenagers get killed for no reason. There bloody but not gory; you used to say "nooo why did they kill her! now its like she's dead he's dead ow hope he dies he can act for sh*t". The girls are hot but you dont really want to f**k'em you just wanna see their tities and see them die. and the killers are just sad they've lost there thunder. (by the way can i say tities here cuz I kinda new here?)

Im very much against the Freddy Freuger remake because I thought the Nightmare on elm st movies were fine for the most part, but given the cheesy direction the Childs Play movies went in, Im very much for a Childs Play reboot. It can truly go in a frightening direction. Take away the constant evil expression on Chuckys face & take away the "kill kill kill" factor & give this guy/doll some reasonable motivation behind his gruesome actions & you got yourself a good psychological thriller! Chucky (or Charles) should have some real people issues that real people face everyday instead of the typical "killer doll" story & it can actually turn into something unique & interesting. Besides, Chucky has never been given the CGI treatment. I would love to see that, at least CGI facial expressions including sad & frustrated not just evil & angry all the time. It def has potential...if done right!

If there was ever a horror film in need of a remake it's Child's Play! The last two films were total crap! Chucky should strike fear... not a comedic response.
