SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Actor Willem Dafoe Joins The Cast Of Robert Eggers' NOSFERATU

After his raucous co-lead role in The Lighthouse and brief supporting appearance in The Northman, Deadline (via FearHQ.com) reports that Willem Dafoe (Spider-Man: No Way Home) is set to reunite with Robert Eggers for the director's long-planned remake of classic vampire tale, Nosferatu.

Eggers is also writing the script, with Jeff Robinov, John Graham, Chris Columbus and Eleanor Columbus producing.

Lily Rose-Depp, Bill Skarsgard and Nicholas Hoult are already on board for the main roles. No information on Dafoe's character was provided.

The Northman star Anya Taylor-Joy was originally in line for the female lead, but was forced to drop out due to a scheduling conflict. Harry Styles was also said to have read for the role of Hutter, who will now be played by Hoult.

This latest take on the silent 1922 horror flick is described as "a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman (Depp) in 19th century Germany and the ancient Transylvanian vampire (Skarsgard) who stalks her, bringing untold horror with him."

Coincidentally, Dafoe actually played Max Schreck, a fictional take on the actor who portrayed the titular vampire in F. W. Murnau's film, in black comedy/horror Shadow of the Vampire back in 2000He was nominated for an Academy Award for his chilling turn.

No release date has been announced, but production is expected to get underway later this year.

I love the 1922 movie and also Werner Herzogs take from the 70s. So hyped to see what Eggers gonna make with this one.

Oh, one more thing:
"Coincidentally, Dafoe actually played Count Orlock, aka Nosferatu"

Actually he played the fictional version of Max Schreck who is a real vampire in the movie.

@IcePyke - I thought Murnau introduced him as Orlock? You might be right... it's been years since I've seen it.

So [frick]ing hyped for this. Sounds incredible. And glad Anya-Taylor Joy was replaced by Lily-Rose. Anya is in every thriller/horror these days, like Maika Monroe. I find them to be really boring choices 😬

@connorblaze - Agreed! I am tired of Anya being everywhere lately. Personally not a big fan of her acting and I think she is very strange to look at.

Eggers occupies a very unique corner in film that no one else (to my knowledge) does. I hope more audiences take notice of his work because I want to see him succeed enough to be free to tell these stories the way he wants to tell them.

@Fares - he does. Think he does something really cool with the minimum color and the narrow aspect ratios, unlike other directors who just use it as a gimmick.

@bkmeijer1 - I also really appreciate how he doesn't project modern behaviours and sensibilities onto his characters. It makes it feel less like watching a movie and more like travelling to a different time, setting and culture.

@Fares - haven't thought about it, but you're right. The characters do indeed act like belong in their setting. And I think that's even emphasized even more due to his specific framing of it all. Really helps sell it

Well yeah, of course he's going to work with Eggers again.

Wait Hoult's in this and Renfield? Damn vampire flicks are really his calling now.

I was surprised upon learning how much Shadow of the Vampire was inspired by real life. Shreck apparently went almost Jared Leto-level method back in the day, buring his clothes to the ground and acting like vampire towards people off-screen too.

Dafoe has really become Eggers' regular actor by this point. This will be Egger's third film in a row with Dafoe. And they really seem like a good match.
