THE EXORCIST: BELIEVER Has Been Read The Last Rites With A Dismal 22% On Rotten Tomatoes

David Gordon Green's direct sequel to William Friedkin's horror masterpiece, The Exorcist, arrives in theaters this weekend, and the reviews have been pretty awful so far...

Reports from the test-screenings were not overly positive, but we didn't expect this!

Universal and Blumhouse's The Exorcist: Believer arrives in theaters this weekend, and while the movie is on track for a pretty respectable opening weekend at the box office, David Gordon Green's legacy sequel to William Friedkin's horror masterpiece has already been read the last rites by critics.

With 122 reviews counted, The Exorcist: Believer is currently sitting at a dismal 22% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Though some critics have come out in defence of the film, the majority seem to feel that it's simply unworthy of being associated with the original in any way. It sounds like Believer has a pretty strong first act, and the performances - particularly from Leslie Odom Jr. and newcomers Lidya Jewett and Olivia Marcum as the two possessed girls - have been universally praised.

Unfortunately, the thing most fans of the '70s classic were most looking forward to, Ellen Burstyn's returning Chris MacNeil, is said to be one of the weakest aspects of the movie, with many noting that Believer probably would have been better off disassociating itself from the franchise completely and telling its own story.

We'll have some spoiler breakdowns for you over the weekend, but for now, have a look at the most recent trailer, and let us know if you plan on checking out The Exorcist: Believer on the big screen despite the negative reviews.

"Exactly 50 years ago this fall, the most terrifying horror film in history landed on screens, shocking audiences around the world. Now, on Friday, October 13, a new chapter begins. From Blumhouse and director David Gordon Green, who shattered the status quo with their resurrection of the Halloween franchise, comes The Exorcist: Believer.

Since the death of his pregnant wife in a Haitian earthquake 12 years ago, Victor Fielding (Tony winner and Oscar nominee Leslie Odom, Jr.; One Night in Miami, Hamilton) has raised their daughter, Angela (Lidya Jewett, Good Girls) on his own. But when Angela and her friend Katherine (newcomer Olivia Marcum), disappear in the woods, only to return three days later with no memory of what happened to them, it unleashes a chain of events that will force Victor to confront the nadir of evil and, in his terror and desperation, seek out the only person alive who has witnessed anything like it before: Chris MacNeil."

The Exorcist: Believer also stars Ann Dowd as Victor and Angela’s neighbor, and Jennifer Nettles and Norbert Leo Butz as the parents of Katherine, Angela’s friend.

The movie is set to hit theaters on October 6, with sequel, The Exorcist: Deceiver, arriving on April 18, 2025.

They spent $400m to do this trilogy.

@CoHost - yeah, I was just thinking how Jason Blum is probably kicking himself right now over all the money he just lost.

I wonder if they'll scrap everything, or just maybe try and make it 2 films now?

Exorcism films are a dime a dozen. When the original film came out nobody even knew what an exorcism is. I have not seen the film but it looks like it treads over already traveled roads. It is probably better than its RT score but just over done at this point.

@Forthas - well you're in luck! The brand new 4k restoration with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos is either out now in certain countries, or it will be with the Month. It's the closest you can get to the original film negative

Crap director
Equals a crap film

Glad to see this because Hollywood has to stop relying on nostalgia with old horror movies and just make good original ones like talk to me.

The original is an all timer. It set precedent for a lot of horror movies, this looks like a Spirit Halloween knock off. They paid 400m for a trilogy lmao. Co writers Danny McBride and DGG.. moments like these are sure, suits know nothing other than money, those trash Halloween remakes makes a profit. They give DGG basically carte Blanche, and this is how they desecrate the glory that is The Exorcist. I'm glad to know William Friedkin can rest peacefully in his grave. [frick] this remake

" On William Friedkin's passing, writer and film critic Ed Whitfield posted this on Twitter(X) and Facebook : "William Friedkin once said to me, 'Ed, the guy who made those new Halloween sequels is about to make one to my movie, the Exorcist. That's right, my signature film is about to be extended by the man who made Pineapple Express. I don't want to be around when that happens. But if there's a spirit world, and I can come back, I plan to possess David Gordon Green and make his life a living hell.'" "

I guess the spirit world is real? But probably not since anyone could see this coming. Cash grab revival that nobody wanted. But it's IP, of course they're gonna requel it.

Watched the original again for the first time in 5 or so years. Still super [frick]ed up and impactful. All others have never been able to capture the same magic. Aside from the demonic possession, the scary part to me was all of the testing they were doing to Regan on antiquated hospital equipment (obviously not at the time) but 50 years later, super scary.

I wouldn't go by RT on this one. It's not great, but it's a lot better than I expected and contains some genuinely creepy, shocking moments. It doesn't hold a candle to the original (obviously) OR Exorcist III, but if you;re a fan I recommend giving it a shot.

You know people use to be really interested in Blumhouses output, especially compared to other horror movies studios put out

But seriously it is devolving into basically b movie or direct to video sequel quality.

Their best directors have moved onto bigger and better things

ALL of the Exorcist movies, other than the original have gotten terrible reviews.

Off topic: Yet, ANOTHER rewrite for the Blade reboot. 🤣

@Feralwookiee - cant believe they are going to so much trouble for one actor, just because this was a movie he wanted to do.

I liked Wesley Snipes Blade movies, but highly doubt he is a needed character in the grand scheme of the mcu.

If Ali is being difficult and they still want to do the movie, could always gets Snipes, if the rumors are true of him being more of a mentor to his daughter

Studios should really let the David Gordon Green ship sink. He made a name for himself with Halloween (2018) and pulled a Zack Snyder. The problem with directors like Green and Snyder is that they want to tell a story that they know would never be greenlit so they target a successful brand/franchise and use that I.P to hide their hidden story they have always wanted to tell. For example Halloween Ends, He wanted the entire plot to focus on Corey who was influenced by evil. Rather than make his own I.P he shoehorned in that trash storyline into Halloween and removed Michael Myers and downgraded him to a side quest. These types of directors are why the Horror Genre nosedived into hell after 2008.

@SonOfAGif - I thought Halloween Ends was the best of the trilogy. Different strokes, I guess.

But horror didn't nosedive. I'd argue it's the only genre that's been consistently strong since like the 80s. Every single year has produced a horror classic. Can't say that for any other genre.
