According to his wife Julie Blatty, the cause of his tragic demise was multiple myeloma, a form of plasma cell cancer. The Exorcist is perhaps his most celebrated work, having received critical acclaim and going on to be adapted into an Oscar-winning film that spawned two sequels, two prequels, and a television series.
