TOXIC AVENGER Remake Gets Disappointing Update From Peter Dinklage After Reports Claiming It's "Unreleasable"

Macon Blair's The Toxic Avenger remake still has no official release date and lead star Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) admits he's also in the dark about what the future holds in store for the movie.

We're now coming up to a year since the first teaser trailer for The Toxic Avenger remake was released. We've heard very little since then, though reviews from various film festivals have been largely positive (in fact, with 25 verdicts counted, it sits at 92% on Rotten Tomatoes).

It was recently reported that filmmaker Macon Blair's movie starring Game of Thrones' Peter Dinklage is considered "unreleasable."

A producer reportedly called The Toxic Avenger's commercial prospects too "out there" for a traditional theatrical release, likely explaining why the movie still has no confirmed distributor. It is unclear why it hasn't been offloaded to a streaming platform or digital vendor.

Talking to ComicBook.com, Dinklage shared another disappointing update on where things stand with the remake. "No, I'm not a producer on it. I don't know," he said when asked about a possible release date. "I do want it to get out there into the world because it was a really big hit at Fantastic Fest in Austin."

"Macon Blair, the writer/director who is also in The Thicket. He's incredible. He's one of my favorite people and favorite artists. So hopefully it will have its day in the toxic sun."

Fans have expressed excitement for The Toxic Avenger, so the prospect of it never seeing the light of day is deeply troubling. At this rate, even an obscure streaming platform could be a big ask for The Toxic Avenger, presumably die to its gory subject matter. However, if In a Violent Nature can receive a big screen release, why not this movie?

Written and directed by Macon Blair, Legendary Entertainment's The Toxic Avenger is a contemporary reimagining of Troma Entertainment’s 1984 cult classic of the same name created by Lloyd Kaufman. This film features a stellar ensemble, led by Peter Dinklage in the title role, that includes Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Paige, Julia Davis, Jonny Coyne, Elijah Wood, and Kevin Bacon.

The Toxic Avenger follows struggling everyman-janitor Winston Gooze, who is transformed by a horrible toxic accident into a new evolution of hero: The Toxic Avenger! Now with super-human strength and wielding a glowing mop for his unconventional weapon, he must race against time to save his son and stop a ruthless and power-hungry corporate tyrant bent on harnessing toxic superpowers to strengthen his polluted empire.

As noted, the movie doesn't have a confirmed release date. Keep checking back here for updates on The Toxic Avenger as we have them.

Why not release this film onto Shudder as they also gave In A Violent Night a big screen release as well and given that this film could also be considered a horror film it would be the absolutely perfect film for them to have on there streaming website.

@batman001 - Because they need financial gain to justify releasing it, and that (Shudder) inherently doesn’t guarantee it.

@batman001 - "presumably die to its gory subject matter"

Highly doubt this, probably producers squabbling of money any or rights/credit issues

@IAmAHoot - They could if they gave it a very limited theatrical release say one to two weeks for example before then putting the film up on Shudder.

@DaHULK2000 - Most likely yeah but surely the rights and credits thing would have been sorted out well before the film even entered pre-production.

@batman001 - I'm just making a attempt at a educated guess..but all the same, at times everyone(producers etc)can come to the table with a plan of how everythings gonna be divyed up whens all's said and done, and at times certain partys in these groups when these meetings occur can leave the negotiations feeling like they were shortchanged, it does happen.

I wonder if the reason they can't release it is a legal one? Like Disney threatened to sue them since it's got the word Avenger in it. You'd think it'd sell based on that word alone. Lol.

@EskimoJ - What's not to understand, 25 critics reviewed it and 92% liked it, so you could say in their eyes it's a good movie.

But the star of the movie says it's unreleasable, so if critics like it why not release it.

92% RT score, extreme gory violence, and "They considered it 'unreleasable'"; sounds like prime A marketing material.

It'll eventually get dumped somewhere to stream. If they were smart, They'd do it similar to the way Dog Soldiers was initially released, here in the states. It aired on SyFy which then scored it a limited theatrical release and became a beloved movie from there, and turned a profit. - Shudder or something, seems like a good place to do it.

If they released The Crow, they can release this.
