Writer/Producer Alex Garland Says There Are No Plans For 28 WEEKS LATER Sequel

A while back there was a rumor saying that we might see another chapter in the 28 Days Later franchise. Now, according to the writer and producer Alex Garland, that is not happening after all. More after the jump...

Back in 2010, a rumor surfaced online saying that there is a possibility of a new sequel to 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later. Until now, we haven't heard anything that could confirm or deny this report. While talking to Dread Central about Dredd, writer Alex Garland was asked if there is any truth to this, and if he could set the record straight. Here is what Garland had to say:

"I'm still so proud of 28 Days Later and how well it's been received over the years so I appreciate that. But in regards to another movie, no- there are no plans for a 28 Months Later or whatever they were calling it. This is a series I've always been heavily involved with between the original and the sequel so if there were plans for another movie, I would absolutely know about it."

There you go. I guess we won't be seeing a new film in this franchise anytime soon. As a fan of the previous two films, I'm a little bit disappointed, as I always thought they would make a third one. What do you make of this? Are you a fan of the previous chapters?

That sucks, I loved both films and I was hoping if they would get around to making a third one. I still hope it happens some where down the line.

That's too bad. I prefer the first one, but the sequel made a mark because of Imogen Poots! Lol!

If you want a movie that's more how a Resident Evil movie SHOULD be, watch REC. Or if you're lame and can't read subtitles, the remake Quarantine.

@Gorilla - LOL. But seriously, 28 Months should have been a no-brainer. That's a year and a half after the second one, which was about a half year after the first. A perfect interval IMO.

@protector that VHS movie was terrible and had no plot to it at all, I expected it to be at least a little better.

I loved 28 days and weeks later, I like how there was a reason and source to the virus rather than all the other zombie type movies where there is no cause or explanation to the outbreak. I really hope they make a third.

I would LOVE to see a third movie in the franchise. Huge fan of these movies. I'd give just about anything to see another.

I started off liking the direction the comic interquel that Boom Studios did, except for the crappy way they pretty much wrote Jim out and focused on Selina. The entire run I was anticipating his return since they kept mentioning him, and instead we wound up with some throwaway dialogue in one panel near the end of the series that pretty much assured neither he or Hannah were going to show up at all. The explanation was completely disappointing. Sadly, knowing what "happens" to him dragged down how I see the first film now. It did fit nicely between the two films, though, as it picked up at a refugee camp shortly after 28 Days Later with the last few issues occurring through 28 Weeks Later.

I was really hoping for a third to tie up the loose ends and end the story with some closure.

someday though, it will happen. Danny Boyle himself has long discussed his desire to see it through.

28 Days was a game changer in my opinion

i'm maybe in the minority, but i like 28 WEEKS Later more than the original Days.

but, yeah..i'm more psyched for 28 MONTHS Later (if they ever do decide to do it) than even World War Z.

speaking of new zombie flicks, though...check out DEAD SET. it's a British Dawn of the Dead (only it's set on a TV set, instead of a mall). it's not a remake. it's not a ripoff. it's just awesome scary fun.
