IRON MAN 3 Will Be The First Movie To Screen In 4D In Japan

According to THR, Marvel's Iron Man 3 will be screen in 4DX at a theater in Nagoya, central Japan starting April 26th. The "Fourth dimension" effects utilized by the system include strobe lights, bubbles, titling and vibrating seats, blowing wind, fog and odour effects, all combined with what's going on on-screen. The 4DX system already is in use in theaters in China, South Korea, Thailand, Russia, Mexico, Israel and several countries in South America. Apparently CJ Group will be moving ahead with plans to bring the format to the U.S. this year, with a view to equipping 200 theaters over the coming five years. Sounds a bit distracting to me, any of you guys ever watched a movie in this format?

Unnecessary. It's a movie, not an Universal Studios ride.

Hahaha.... yeah we have one of those in New Tampa/Wesley Chapel. Cobb Theatres.

Basically, it's in a 3D auditorium, and the 4D has the front seating separate from the rest. I've never actually done the whole 4D experience but those who have say it's pretty lame.

I've been in a 4D theater. It was okay, but it was a 15 minute movie. I don't know that I'd want to do that for 2 hours.

Smell-o-vision? That's pushing it. But I myself have purchased some D-Box seats for Iron Man 3. That's vibrating seats to the laymen.

We'll all leave the theater exhausted as if we've been riding on a beat-up Harley for hours on end.

The Lost World: Jurassic Park teaser trailer had a strobe light effect that went off during the lightning flashes of the ad. It was a short trailer -- I believe all it showed was a T.Rex making a footprint in mud -- but I remember thinking "Whoa, were those lightning flashes in the auditorium?"

I think for 80% of the audience, the effect was mostly subconscious, but I think it was powerful enough to have people perk up in their seats, even if they didn't know why.

I bet the smell feature of 4DX won't last long, but the rumble and tilt and fog features could be successful.

We have DBox in Martinez and its really cool. The seats move and shake & react, etc. it's usually really well done and sync'd to the movie.
