In the midst of Marvel's The Avengers growing box-office success, The Hollywood Reporter recently caught up with producer Jon Favreau, who notably helmed the debut of Marvel's cinematic Universe with 2008's Iron Man. Reminiscing the ensemble flick's early stages, Favreau also praising writer-director Joss Whedon, discusses his involvement on Iron Man 3 as a producer, and the Shane Black-directed threequel's production status.

On the success of Marvel's The Avengers:
Yeah, how do you like that? Turned out really well. Look, it was something we always planned for, and hoped for, but anything could have gone wrong and it took a lot of things to go right. First and foremost, Joss, to be able to pull together, four different characters based on four different sets of films, that shared a lot tonally and they shared some cast-wise, but he had to pull all those things together and make it work, it’s a very high degree of difficulty for him. But we had done a lot of setup in Iron Man 2 and even in Iron Man 1, we were hoping that it would come to this. I don’t think it became a reality until the last few years, but we were definitely planning for it. But it took a lot of people to pass the baton well, and each director that had been involved with the franchises did their part, but it took Joss to really seal the deal, and clearly it worked out, because the moment seems to continue going.

On the current production status of Iron Man 3:
Yeah, down in Wilmington, it’s starting to shoot in a couple weeks. I was just talking to Shane Black and Downey and look, I think it’s a really smart way to go. After Avengers, you want to start with something really bold and inspired, and if you’ve ever seen Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang you’ve seen that when Downey and Shane get together, interesting and unexpected things happen, and I’m happy to see that it’s taking a bit of a tonal shift from The Avengers and it’s going to be something completely different and exciting, and I’m happy to be a part of it.

On a potential shift in tone; more dark perhaps:
No, just a little bit more off beat, I’d say. Shane and Robert definitely have an original point of view and an original take on the character, and I think it delves deeper into what makes Tony Stark tick, and plays on the unexpected original unpredictable quality of the character that I think fans gravitate to.

On whether he'll be involved on a regular basis:
I’ll be very involved on that one. I’ve already been talking to them and I feel a tremendous connection to that franchise and that character and I’m very proud to see it moving forward in a way that re-enforces that story.

Iron Man 3 is loosely based on the six-issue "Extremis" story arc written by Warren Ellis. Marvel Studios president of production Kevin Feige says Tony Stark will be "stripped of everything, back against a wall, & has nothing but his intelligence to get him out." Starring Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark), Gwyneth Paltrow (Virginia Potts), Don Cheadle (Col. James Rhodes), & Guy Pearce (Aldrich Killian) with Ben Kingsley in "final negotiations" for an undisclosed villain role, Shane Black directs Iron Man's third solo outing into theaters on May 3, 2013!

It will be interesting to see if fans still turn out in droves for a solo flick after the monster success of The Avengers. From what we've heard, there won't be cameos by Cap, Thor or Hulk in IRON MAN 3, which seems like a mistake and a missed opportunity to me. Fans have stated loud and clear that we like seeing these heroes interact...

I think that they are being careful about developing the brand of each character on their own. If they keep throwing in others and cameos in all of the movies it will start to feel like an animated series. Plus it could detract from the excitement building for Avengers 2. A few easter eggs wouldn't hurt though :)

@Stumblin- Oh thanks didn't know that.

I'm actually glad War Machine wasn't in the Avengers. He's basically another Iron Man. Not personality wise but still. Rather have other heroes on the team like Black Panther, Ant-Man, and Wasp.

TheAmazingSpidey63 - 5/14/2012, 2:21 PM
@IM53 - Haha, same here, man.
There's one thing that I questioned for quite some time, though. Seeing as how War Machine was introduced in Iron-Man 2, wouldn't you think that Fury would also recruit War Machine in The Avengers? I don't know, just sayin'.

Hell, speaking of War Machine, wonder when they're going ahead with a War Machine movie?

That this disproves ALL the bullshit rumors that came out about him falling out with Marvel and why he wouldn't direct the third movie.

@SpiderFan35 I agree with you. Most of the excitement for Avengers was that we FINALLY got to see these characters all on screen at the same time. If they keep appearing more and more in each other's films then people will lose that excitement for the Avengers films

Although, a few cameos or easter eggs here and there won't hurt

I just hope that when we see these post Avengers solo films the general audience won't be like "Why doesn't Iron Man just call Thor or Captain America for help, I mean they are teammates after all".

@alx2125: YESSSSSSSS!!!!

They say they're doing Extremis storyline, if so they best update that suit to the new one in the comics.

Also, War Machine would be a sweet cameo. I just hope they do better character development with War Machine, have him shown in his own battle.
MagnetMan
MagnetMan - 5/14/2012, 2:43 PM
I think War Machine would be a great addition to the team in the Avengers sequel. With his military position, have his motivations be suspicious as to whether he's a plant from the government or the shadowy Council. It would be a great dynamic for one team member to not be what they appear to be - at least in the eyes of the other members.

He was clearly over his head with Iron-Man 2! U can tell in the BTS footage he just couldn't handle that pressure!!

TheAmazingSpidey63 - 5/14/2012, 2:47 PM
@IM53 - I hear ya, man. But wasn't The Avengers like years after Iron-Man 2? By then you would think that he would've been offered the position in the Avengers. But, oh, well. I guess we'll have to wait and see if he'll be in the second Avengers movie. :)
