5 Reasons The DC Films Universe Still Has The Potential To Rival The Marvel Cinematic Universe

After the mostly negative response to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, many fans have turned their back on the DC Films Universe, but there's still plenty of evidence pointing to them being able to top Marvel.

After the mixed reaction to Man of Steel back in 2013, fans were hoping that Batman v Superman would be the movie to help launch the DC Films Universe in a big way, setting the stage for both the Justice League movie and every single one of the solo outings planned for those characters. Unfortunately, things didn't go quite as planned for Warner Bros., and despite that being just one mistake, many fans have already decided to write off this newly created shared cinematic universe.

However, it's too soon for both that and to speculate on the chances that the studio's DC Comics adaptations will one day end up topping the success found by Marvel Studios. However, there's more than enough evidence to suggest that the DC Films Universe could rival the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Some of you probably don't like hearing that, but what you'll find here is a look at five key pieces of evidence which should help reassure you that there's still hope for these movies to succeed...

5. Geoff Johns Can Save The Day

loading

Geoff Johns played a huge role in fixing the DC Comics Universe with Rebirth, and that one-shot would help the publisher top Marvel in terms of sales while simultaneously restoring a more optimistic tone to the stories they tell. Based on comments the writer made when that issue was released, it doesn't sound as if he was overly keen on the dark interpretation of the Man of Steel in Batman v Superman, and with him taking on a larger role in Justice League and the DC Films Universe in general, he could very well be the one to help steer this not quite sinking ship in the right direction.

Johns is the closest Warner Bros. is going to get to having their own Kevin Feige, a role he's now been given alongside Jon Berg. Having someone who knows these characters so well could help to completely turn this slate around, and providing he brings the right ideas to the table and the studio takes note, it may not be long until we see these DC Comics adaptations rivalling what Marvel Studios produces in terms of finding the right balance between pleasing fans and regular moviegoers.

4. Moviegoers Might Be Getting Bored Of Marvel

loading

The superhero genre is still going strong, but the very different responses to movies like Deadpool and X-Men: Apocalypse proves that moviegoers aren't willing to flock to anything and everything comic book related. If anything, as more of these adaptations reach the big screen, it seems as if fans are becoming pickier in what they'll accept, and that they expect every one of these to be as good as The Avengers and The Dark Knight.

What's interesting about Marvel is that they seem to have reached their peak in terms of success. Many expected Avengers: Age of Ultron to creep up towards the $2 billion mark but it failed to top the first instalment, and not even a movie with Earth's Mightiest Heroes fighting each other (with Spider-Man thrown in for good measure) could do business as big as Star Wars: The Force Awakens. If then we see the Marvel movies plateau over the next few years, chances are that these DC Films could end up stepping up to more than rival them, but only if they deliver and are subsequently embraced.

3. The Filmmakers

loading

With the likes of the Russo Brothers, Ryan Coogler, and James Gunn all working on Marvel Phase 3 movies, there's no denying that Kevin Feige has assembled an incredible wealth of talent who are all but guaranteed to deliver some critical and commercial hits. However, taking the very divisive Zack Snyder out of the equation (at this point, you either love or hate the filmmaker), there's no denying that Warner Bros. also has some pretty damn great directors working for them.

James Wan has proved to be a very consistent talent and feels like the right man to make an Aquaman movie which fires on all cylinders, while Dope's Rick Famuyiwa taking the helm of The Flash is an unexpected and very exciting decision which could have some potentially incredible results. It remains to be seen who else they'll hire, but when you throw Ben Affleck into the mix as the director of The Batman, we could very well finally have a superhero movie which receives some serious awards consideration.

2. It Can Still Bring Something New To The Table

loading

There may be a lot of sequels in Marvel's Phase 3 slate, but they're definitely bringing something new to the table too. Doctor Strange, Black Panther, and Captain Marvel are all exciting for very different reasons, but an argument could be made that the DC Films slate is even more interesting and diverse. Aquaman is going to be set under the sea, Green Lantern Corps will take us on a very different sort of outer space adventure to the Guardians of the Galaxy, and Shazam will delve into a massively mythological corner of this world with a box office draw like Dwayne Johnson.

Those are just the three which immediately come to mind, and after seeing the likes of Captain America and Spider-Man on the big screen for years, audiences will no doubt be excited to see some new faces to help freshen up the superhero genre. New doesn't necessarily mean better of course, but for any moviegoers getting a little sick of Earth's Mightiest Heroes, the DC Films slate could be exactly what the doctor ordered.

1. It's Still Tough To Beat The Batman

loading

Batman v Superman may have failed to reach $1 billion at the box office, but you can bet your life that the Caped Crusader played a key role in why the mostly critically panned movie ended up doing so well. In fact, the presence of Batman is no doubt going to help bring back those who didn't enjoy that movie to Justice League, especially as Ben Affleck was pretty much the only part of the release which every fan and critic praised.

We don't know much about what to expect from the solo movie the actor and director will take the helm of, but rumours point to it being huge, and it could very well rival something like The Dark Knight when it comes to accolades and box office performance. The point is, regardless of how the rest of the DC Films slate goes, Batman is in good hands, and there's a very good chance that the hero's movie will be so amazing that it ends up topping every one of the Marvel Studios releases on the way, and that would be a massive victory for Warner Bros.

Do you think the DC Films Universe has the potential to rival and even top the Marvel Cinematic Universe? As always, let us know your thoughts in the comments section.
