Justice League Star Ben Affleck Questions DC's Approach While Praising Marvel's Kevin Feige As A "Genius"

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice star Ben Affleck has questioned DC's approach to its superhero movies while praising Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige as a "genius" for knowing what audiences want.

Ben Affleck has never shied away from reflecting on his time as the DCEU's Batman, but his latest comments about Justice League are particularly candid. The actor admits that making the DC team-up "wasn't that much fun" and weighs in on the DC Studios' ongoing struggle to decide exactly who its superhero movies should be made for.

Affleck first played Bruce Wayne in 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice before reprising the role in Justice League the following year. While the former has its fair share of detractors, Affleck looks back on the experience fondly.

"Yeah. I really liked doing 'Batman v Superman.' That was really fun," the actor told Variety. "'Justice League' had a lot of issues, and that wasn't that much fun, frankly."

Justice League was plagued by problems, with Zack Snyder stepping away before Joss Whedon took over for extensive reshoots that changed the movie dramatically. Snyder's original vision was eventually released as Zack Snyder's Justice League in 2021, and Affleck says seeing that version finally become a reality was something he fully supported.

"I was glad that Zack [Snyder] was able to get his vision for how he wanted that movie to be out there. That was rewarding."

However, Affleck, who later returned as Batman in The Flash, also acknowledged the concerns surrounding Snyder's approach to these characters: the movies could be too dark and frightening for younger audiences.

"There was a sense of 'Oh, the movie was a little bit too dark or scary, and it lost some of the younger audience,'" he admitted. "It seems to be an ongoing question, and I don't know the answer. Do you go all the way to a hard-R rating like 'Joker'? Or do it like Marvel, which does something broad, unless you're talking about 'Deadpool & Wolverine'?"

"The interesting thing with the DC characters [comes down] to the legacy of Frank Miller," Affleck explained. "There seems to be more tension between 'Are we doing the grown-up version or the one that's open to kids?' There's a risk of being a feathered fish."

That's a problem DC is still navigating, according to Affleck, though he has nothing but praise for Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige.

"It's something they're still navigating at DC," he said. "But I have to say, Kevin Feige is a kind of genius. I can't think of any producer in the world who can say, 'This is what the audience wants,' and be right, except for him."

As a reminder, Affleck previously said he would "absolutely not" direct a movie for DC Studios and, while he has no issue with James Gunn, he's "not interested" in how the DCU is shaping up.

With DC Studios now building an entirely new shared universe under Gunn and Peter Safran, Affleck's comments raise an interesting question: has the franchise finally found the right balance, or is this still an identity crisis waiting to happen?

PG-13 blockbusters Superman and Supergirl were opposites both critically and commercially, meaning this month's Clayface—an R-rated horror movie—will be a big test to see what audiences want from the new DCU.

A kid can read The Dark Knight Returns and still enjoy it. The same can't be said of the Joker movie.

Dark tone and heavy themes don't automatically mean inappropriate for kids. The Incredibles has dark elements to its story, but you can still watch it with your family.

I'd love to see someone at DC try to find that balance again.

A tale of 2 visions for the DCU.

Snyder’s was better, but both are bad.

Actually, he has an obvious issue with James Gunn, and that issue is called “James Gunn.” Why deny it?

Feige really is HIM. After endgame it took a shitty CEO to get marvel to fall a bit but now they're on the upswing big time. DCU will get their. They just need to build goodwill. Gunn needs to invite more writers and directors with different voices because it's starting to feel like GOTG vibe at DC.

> DCU will get their

Dude, it’s dead on arrival, just like Sony’s villain universe. But even that had more hype surrounding it than the DCU.

> They just need to build goodwill

They’re literally just spitting on the audience’s opinion and burying their reputation without paying attention to the reaction — just read what they’re saying. It’s called “toxic positivity,” and it never ends well.

> Gunn needs to invite more writers and directors with different voices

What for? Gunn will still change everything the way he wants. See Supergirl.

> it's starting to feel like GOTG vibe at DC

Are you just now starting to realize why they hired Gunn for this position?

If people still keep going after the first few times they were supposedly "tricked", does that therefore not have to meant that they're not being "tricked" anymore and are actually getting what they want?

Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight isn’t main continuity DC. Neal Adams and Denny O’Neil’s work on Batman was. Hope that helps.

@TheVisionary25 - Ok. Sure. It was huge back then and is more easily reproduced as a graphic novel. It was influential and has remained so. But, it is an Elseworlds title prior to DC having that label for some titles.

@Truebeliever333 - There is a certain type of people who think that there is only one thing and there can’t be anything else — obviously, I’m having a conversation with one of those people right now. The director has the right to choose where to draw inspiration from. In the case of films, it doesn’t matter at all whether the comics that serve as a basis are considered canon or not, because these films exist in their own separate universe, not to mention the fact that the comics by the authors you mentioned have long ceased to be considered canonical after numerous reboots. And even more so, I don’t see any objective reason to be outraged that the director chose one of the greatest Batman comics instead of, God forbid, the outdated slops from the Silver Age that Gunn is obsessed with. Broaden your horizons.
Truebeliever333
Truebeliever333 - 10/7/2026, 12:48 PM
@TheVisionary25 - My guess is it is one of the first, maybe the first, Batman title Snyder read as an adult. He might have only been familiar with Silver Age Batman comics and the Adam West TV show prior to reading it.

Affleck hates being associated with the DCEU. The entire experience for him was an ordeal. He’s moved way past all that and I’m sensing some deep regret in accepting the role of Batman in the first place. He’s just trying to save face nothing more. Y’all forgot the sad Affleck meme. 😆😆😆🤣
