BOX OFFICE: THOR: RAGNAROK Hits $700 Million Worldwide As JUSTICE LEAGUE Nears $300 Million
Well, it wasn't all bad news for Justice League this weekend at the box office! After a strong opening in China and a number of overseas locations, things are starting to look up for the movie...
North American moviegoers may have chosen to (mostly) reject Justice League this weekend but there was slightly better news for the movie overseas. The DC Comics adaptation debuted with $185.5 million from 65 markets and scored a whopping $51.7 million in China, Warner Bros.' second biggest opening of all-time with only Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ahead of it with $56.5 million.
As a result, Justice League now has a total of $281 million worldwide, a figure which is just shy of its massive $300 million production budget. Warner Bros. is probably relatively content with these numbers but they're not great, especially when The Avengers made $207 million in North America alone back in 2012. That featured lesser known heroes like Captain America and Thor compared to Superman and Batman. The question now is, will the studio be able to save this team moving forward?
Time will tell on that front but one franchise which is looking very healthy right now belongs to Marvel's God of Thunder. With $247.4 million domestically and $490.7 million internationally, Thor: Ragnarok has $738.1 million worldwide, an impressive figure and more than anyone ever expected!
