Marvel Studios Exec Says Robert Downey Jr.'s IRON MAN Is "No Longer On The Table"

Marvel Studios VP of Production & Development, Stephen Broussard, has seemingly debunked the persistent rumors that Robert Downey Jr. is set to reprise the role of Tony Stark in Phase 5...

In arguably the most emotional moment in the MCU so far, Tony Stark gave his life to defeat Thanos and bring back everyone who was snapped out of existence after "The Blip" in Avengers: Endgame.

Robert Downey Jr. has indicated that he is done with the character in interviews, though he has also said "never say never" when quizzed about a potential return, and there are persistent rumors that an Iron Man Variant will play a part in the Multiverse Saga (most likely Avengers: Secret Wars).

The nature of the Multiverse means this would certainly be possible (whether Downey Jr. reprising the role would cheapen Stark's sacrifice is up for debate), but Marvel Studios VP of Production & Development Stephen Broussard appeared to confirm that RDJ will not be back during a recent interview with i09.

"Well, I think one of the meta-narratives of Phase Four was about new characters. It was about new people stepping into mantles. If you look at, like, Cassie [Lang in 'Quantumania'] getting a suit and Kate Bishop [in 'Hawkeye'], new characters being introduced like Jack in Werewolf by Night. After these first 10 years of Marvel storytelling, torches are being passed, like with Robert Downey Jr. no longer being [on the] table and stuff like that. So it was kind of like a new generation stepping to the forefront which, again, has always happened in the comics."

It's worth noting that Broussard wasn't addressing the rumor specifically, and his comments may simply refer to the fact that they no longer have full access to the character.

Plus, if Downey Jr. was being lined up for a future movie, it's not like he's going to admit it here anyway!

What do you guys think? Will Iron Man return in Phase 5? Should he? Drop us a comment down below.

"So it was kind of like a new generation stepping to the forefront which, again, has always happened in the comics."

It's always happened TEMPORARILY in the comics. This is a big detail people always leave out when saying this.

@CorndogBurglar - yeah but we're dealing with real, aging people and not pencil and ink, so there was always going to be moving on. To your point, it also still may be temporary when they blow everything up with Secret Wars and will probably introduce a new younger variant Iron Man and Captain America.

I always find it interesting that the MCU has made people completely forget that when Marvel first said they were introducing a shared universe around these characters, everyone said "it's a B-level squad without Spiderman, Fantastic Four and X-Men". Now they have those properties and will be the forefront moving forward and people are still like "I want Iron Man back"

@SATW42 - Yeah, but thats really because RDJ charmed every viewer over the past 10 years as a highly entertaining Iron Man. He was the center of the franchise. Just look at how many unrelated villains tie back to him lol.

So I can understand that. And early on all the main MCU characters WERE B-listers. Some were C-listers.

@CorndogBurglar - Yes, but people also need to accept that these are not the comics. This is its own limited run and then its over. Very different medium altogether.

Well, Iron Man could come back. It just doesn't have to be RDJ playing him. He's a variant right?

@WEAPONXOXOXO - They could technically bring back everyone that's died if they want. But the Multiverse shouldn't be used a macguffin to bring back all these characters. At least not in my opinion. Its cheap storytelling.

@CorndogBurglar - I'm fairly certain it will be a reset after Secret Wars and then the next generation will truly begin. I think of the Multiverse Saga as the second movie of a trilogy, and then next Saga, after the multiverse is closed and we have an idea of the full roster from the first and second Sagas, is going to be insane.

I'm also not just looking ahead, I've enjoyed phase 4 and I liked Quantumania so I can't wait to see where they go with the council of Kangs for Kang Dynasty

@CorndogBurglar - True but have you seen who they've been hiring to write the scripts lately? We are 3-4 movies in already with the "cheap story telling".

@CorndogBurglar - I think you mean "Deus Ex Machina", not "MacGuffin". But, yes, your point is valid.

@SATW42 - I hope you're right. A universe without Steve Rogers, Stark, and T'Challa feels really weird and much less interesting.

@CorndogBurglar - I think, even if they didn't bring back Stark and Rogers, they still have Spiderman, X-Men and Fantastic Four. T'challa will 100 percent be his son moving forward. There is NO WAY Marvel just erases and retcons Wakanda and Chadwick Boseman. It was totally so they could say "it's t'challa, but it's his son, not a recast or multiversal version of him"
