The 2025 Marvel Studios Project Giancarlo Esposito Will Make His MCU Debut In Has Reportedly Been Revealed!

The Mandalorian star Giancarlo Esposito recently confirmed he's been cast in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He didn't give much away, but told fans at a convention that "It's a role you won’t predict" and confirmed, "It will be teased and there will be a series afterwards."

The actor has long been a fan-favourite choice to play Professor X or Doctor Doom (among others) and it seems his mystery character is neither of them.

According to Murphy's Multiverse, Esposito will make his MCU debut in 2025's Captain America: Brave New World

The site reminds us that much of the movie was shot in 2023 before the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes halted production. During the downtime, Marvel Studios executives decided The Falcon and The Winter Soldier follow-up needed an overhaul and writer Matthew Orton was enlisted to pen scenes for extensive reshoots.

Esposito's character was added during those rewrites and is described as "an antagonistic agent of chaos" and "a serious thorn in Sam Wilson's side."

In terms of possible TV shows that fit the bill of the "series" mentioned by the actor, Daredevil: Born Again is a possibility. If Esposito has shot a secret role for the revival, it may be as an ally to Mayor Wilson Fisk. Ironheart is another, particularly with rumours of Mephisto making his presence felt there; the literal devil showing up in Captain America: Brave New World would be pretty wild, though.

Unfortunately, we can only speculate about who Esposito might play in the MCU for now.

"The truth of the story is this. about four years ago I met with Louis D’Esposito who [is] in the television unit of Marvel," Esposito previously said of being asked to appear in the MCU. "And they had come to me to play possibly play Loki on the television side. And so I did not do [that part], and there were reasons for it."

"I think I wasn’t the one who was chosen [would] be the honest truth. But I would have maybe liked to do it."

"And then I thought when I wasn’t selected for that, that it would be great if I could be in a Marvel movie, not just a television show because I like films a lot," Esposito said of his hopes to join a big screen MCU project. "I love television, obviously I had a great run in the television world, doing last year was four shows at one time and the year before five shows."

Captain America: Brave New World's cast includes Anthony Mackie, Harrison Ford, Danny Ramirez, Carl Lumbly, Tim Blake Nelson, Shira Haas, Liv Tyler, Xosha Roquemore, and WWE Superstar Seth Rollins.

Julius Onah helms the movie from a screenplay by Malcolm Spellman and Dalan Musson, though the director is believed to have also taken a pass at it. Matthew Orton, meanwhile, has written new scenes for the additional photography which is now taking place in Atlanta, Georgia.

Captain America: Brave New World is set to arrive in theaters on February 14, 2025.

If he shows up in Captain America, I could also see him show up in Thunderbolts, Ironheart, and Armor Wars. That's all in the same corner of the MCU I suppose

@bkmeijer1 - Realy depends on the sort of antagonistic character, if it is more a CIA/FBI type of one or political figure it could be anywhere (the agent of chaos bit makes that sound less likely but not impossible).

If a full villain/supe then that would limit where it would make sense. We have Hawkeye getting a second season according to rumors so that and season two of Daredevil would be possibilities at least but too little to go on as is. As this seems to be a late addition to BNW maybe not one that is already scripted and/or filming this year unless a replacement for a Kang variant or such like.

@Apophis71 - right now, I don't see a Hawkeye season 2 happening. Slate is already full as it is.

The government type character would make sense the most to me. And it would allow him to show up in different corners of the MCU.

@bkmeijer1 - Isn't any confirmed D+ shows for 2026 release yet let alone after (other than season two of Daredevil) so assuming it is a show after BNW (feb 25?) there are only two confirmed live action shows he could be in, Daredevil and Iron Heart, after that there are all the rumors to look at which includes Hawkeye. Sure there are more rumored potential shows than would fit into a two year window if only two per year but...

...unsure they will stick to just two live action shows per year however, don't see three being an issue if combined total episodes is only upto 26 (ie everage of one every two weeks), esp if some drop all episodes at once like Echo did.

@Apophis71 - my guess is they'll go for three movies, two live-action shows and two animated shows a year. It's all under different banners now (Studios, Television and Animation respectively), but even then it's a packed slate.

Ironheart and Daredevil are the only confirmed shows, but there's also Wonder Man, Vision and Nova in the works. Out of those, I guess Vision could be where he shows up if it's a government type character.

What a REVEAL!!!!! Norman Osborne incoming!
Vigor

@TheFinestSmack - would anyone have a problem with this? I'm not sure if you're joking. But you mention it and I can totally see the 616 version of Norman being him. Imagine him in iron man armor. The look he had from The Mandarlorian in that armor, with his helmet removed, comes to mind

TheFinestSmack - 5/30/2024, 11:53 AM
@Vigor - I'm only banking on him playing Norman since the Norman in the upcoming Spiderman Freshman Year cartoon looks to have based their Norman on Giancarlo. I hate race swaps 99% of the time, but I'd give this a shot because he's an amazing actor and could pull it off. Still, big RIP for another ginger if this is the case lol.

Heavy Gus energy:

@CaptainFlapjaks - I've noticed lately that so many people say "honestly", "to be honest" and "not gonna lie" before stating pretty basic opinions. It's made me realize that many people probably AREN'T being honest. So it's good to see whose opinions i can trust these days.

@TheFinestSmack - IF...Spider-Man Freshman Year gets pushed back to later next year, then I can see that making sense. Especially the "agent of chaos" bit.
TheFinestSmack
TheFinestSmack - 5/30/2024, 2:01 PM
@Spoken - I almost feel like this casting is the big reason why they have been pushing that release back as much as they have been. The show has been done for a while.
AnEye
AnEye - 5/30/2024, 2:09 PM
@TheFinestSmack - I see, so if they are introducing Osborn, they won't introduce him as CEO tech billionaire, but as the director of H.A.M.M.E.R.

Holy shit! And that makes sense now the more I think about it.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 5/30/2024, 2:38 PM
@Spoken - that's what I'm kinda hoping for. We've seen the Oscorp and Norman/Goblin angle a lot already, so would be nice to change that up. Especially with the Norman variant saying there is no Oscorp in the MCU

@Spoken - i wonder if he will instead be iron patriot and he will tie into armor wars. Or if armour wars is canceled perhaps the rewrites and reshoots were done to add the armor wars plot into the film
