We got a first look at some footage from Werewolf By Night during Marvel Studios' recent D23 presentation via a stylish, surprisingly gory trailer, and a new listing for the Halloween Special has now been shared online.

According to the official Disney documentation (via MCU Direct), the episode is inspired by "horror films of the 1930s and 1940s," which shouldn't come as much of a surprise to any classic horror fan out there who happened to check out the teaser. Though not specifically named, some of the most popular films of the era include The Wolfman (obviously), Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Dracula, Werewolf of London, and The Mummy's Tomb.

A recent Disney+ listing categorized Werewolf by Night as a comedy, which led to speculation that the campier elements of the trailer might be at the forefront of the special. But the new logline concludes with an assurance that this special will "evoke a sense of dread and the macabre, with plenty of suspense and scares along the way as we explore a new corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe."

While the likes of Moon Knight and the Doctor Strange movies have included horror elements, Werewolf By Night looks like it's going to be Marvel Studios' first full-on foray into the genre. The black-and-white teaser gives of an old-school, grindhouse creature feature vibe, as a group of monster hunters come to realize that a member of the team is one of the very beasts they've been pursuing.

Have another look at the footage below.

Though very little has been officially revealed about this "Special Presentation," based on what we see here, there's a very good chance the extensive plot leak that did the rounds earlier this year was accurate.

Werewolf By Night will premiere on Disney+ just in time for Halloween on October 7.

Nevermind.

@ObserverIO - It's obvious as hell to me also, sure, but if someone hasn't seen any Universal Monsters movies, they might not make the connection and wonder why this looks so weird.

Bring it on. The ultimate response to anyone who wants to complain about the 'marvel formula'.

@TheManWithoutFear - As an occasional complainer myself, that trailer was incredible. I feel that not enough people are talking about it.

@TheManWithoutFear - This may be different but Marvel does utilize the exact same “polar opposite’s” formula in there movies. That’s been proven.

@WruceBayne - what do you mean by "polar opposites?"

@Itwasme - like Love and Thunder's tonal shifts from comedy to dark or GOTG being goofy and lighthearted and then making you cry over a tree sacrificing himself for his friends.

@TheManWithoutFear - I think that Marvel has been hearing that complaint for years now, and as I was discussing with some other folks, I think that now that Marvel has established itself the feel more free to explore other genres that still fall within the "comic book" parlance Hence why we're seeing so much variety in their content in Phase 4. Granted, it's not for everyone (and I'm sure they realize that), but who really watches every show on ABC, for example?. Or every sports broadcast on ESPN? They're giving us enough content now that if you don't like one thing, don't worry, they've got something else coming eventually that you might like. In the mean time, there's plenty of other stuff (like Star Wars, etc.) that you can watch. Or, GOD FORBID, see what's going on on another streaming service.

@Itwasme - when I say “polar opposite’s”, I mean the villains are always evil versions of the heroes.
Captain America 1 & 2: Super Soldiers
Iron Man 1 & 2: Men in mechanical suits
Black Widow: Female Spy trained Assassin
Black Panther: Heart shaped herb powered guy in a cat suit.
Incredible Hulk: Gamma powered behemoth
Thor: Fought a God 3 out 4 movies

@WruceBayne - ahh... got it. Thanks for the clarity. I'm not always a fan of that tbh. It can still work of course, but I just prefer when they are more variations.
WruceBayne
WruceBayne - 9/19/2022, 9:28 PM
@Itwasme - Marvel has so many different villains to pit against the heroes that any combination would be interesting instead of who did the “thing” the best.

Itwasme - 9/19/2022, 10:02 PM
@WruceBayne - very true. I'm also not as big on the powers too, which might be odd to say in this conversation, but I think its more about the characters than what they can do. I do appreciate when the villain needs something from the hero, especially something that makes them unique - Marvel does that a lot too.

To me the cool thing about varying powers is it allows for so much creativity. Face punching is still fun, even if it's not the #1 thing for me.

@StSteven - We are seeing a lot of variety in these shows because Disney needs to fill it's streaming service with content as quickly as possible as an attempt to get more subs and to keep them from canceling

With the turmoil at DC and the recent news over the uncertainty of the big screen future of Star Wars, it does make you appreciate what Marvel had been able to do for the last 15 years. Those franchises prove that it's not easy, and we're lucky that Marvel is still doing what it's doing.

I can't remember if Stan coined the moniker 'Fearless' Feige, but thanks to Kev, us Marvel fans have been eating well now for so long that we've forgotten what it's like to be hungry.

Anyway I'm rambling and probably nobody cares (except maybe Irving Forbush) so I'll just say Make Mine Marvel (and rest in peace Stan).

@TheManWithoutFear - "us Marvel fans have been eating well now for so long that we've forgotten what it's like to be hungry."

For sure. And if you're plate us always full, you get picky with what you want.

I don't though, I'm still enjoying everything they're serving us. And also, I care

bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 9/19/2022, 5:52 PM
@WruceBayne - first time I'm hearing. My guess is it'll be 45 minutes long, but that's not based on anything. I could be wrong

I had no idea what Werewolf By Night was before this. Now it's my second most anticipated MCU project behind Blade. The style they're going for is gorgeous.

I recently heard how this was troubled by the actor not liking the costume, causing the runtime to be half of what it was supposed to be. I hope that its not true, and if it is not noticeable, because I do love a good werewolf story

@narrow290 - it's a special, so I'm guessing the average Disney+ episode length. Wouldn't surprise me either if it's 75 minutes though
