SOUTH PARK: JOINING THE PANDERVERSE Trailer Gives The Boys A Diverse Makeover

An all-new South Park Exclusive Event is coming to Paramount+ later this month, and the teaser for Joining The Panderverse is definitely going to raise a few eyebrows...

Yeah, this is certain to ruffle a few feathers!

Love it or hate it, South Park has maintained its position as one of the most popular comedy shows (animated or otherwise) on TV, and Paramount+ has announced that an all-new Exclusive Event titled South Park: Joining the Panderverse is set to debut on the streaming service on Friday, Oct. 27 in the U.S. and Canada, and Oct. 28 in the U.K. and Australia.

The official logline reads: “Cartman’s deeply disturbing dreams portend the end of the life he knows and loves. The adults in South Park are also wrestling with their own life decisions as the advent of AI is turning their world upside down.”

Based on what we see here, we can assume that this AI is going to create new versions of Cartman, Stan, Butters and Kenny, who are reimagined as diverse female characters in the teaser promo. Right at the end, we see Kyle sitting in PC Principal's office as he asks him, “How does this even make any sense?” PC responds, "It makes perfect sense... I think the problem, is you!"

South Park has never shied away from controversy (a lot of the time, it outright courts it), so It was probably only a matter of time before the show took aim at the notions of forced diversity and pandering by inclusivity in the film and TV industries, and here we are!

Check out the teaser in the player below, and let us know what you think in the comments.

"South Park is set in a fictional Colorado town of the same name and focuses largely on the antics of four grade-school boys: Eric Cartman, Stanley Marsh, Kyle Broflovski, and Kenneth (Kenny) McCormick, although numerous episodes have dealt with the town's other denizens, most of whom are recurring characters. The series became infamous for its profanity and dark, surreal humor that satirizes a large range of subject matter."

Four previous South Park exclusive events have already been released and are available to watch exclusively on Paramount+: South Park: Post Covid, South Park: Post Covid: The Return of Covid, South Park: The Streaming Wars, and South Park: The Streaming Wars Part 2.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone are the series’ co-creators and executive producers; Anne Garefino and Frank C. Agnone II join them in executive producing. Eric Stough, Adrien Beard, Bruce Howell and Vernon Chatman serve as producers. Christopher Brion serves as creative director of South Park Digital Studios.

Comedy Central has renewed South Park through 2027, which will lead the series into a 30th season.

This coming after the previous article is serendipitous.

@Shivermetimbers - and I love the approach to comedy. Doesn't matter what group you're with, you are worthy of being made fun of. And they adhere to that consistently.

THAT is what equality truly means.

I can't wait to see the actual and performative melt downs when this episode drops. Lot of people who act exactly like PC principal here.

@DarthOmega - some people probably don't even realize PC principal is making fun of them.

They probably see him as the voice of reason 🤣

@Origame - I know. That's what makes it so funny. South Park doesn't even have to make jokes anymore. They can just do a review of the last 5 years or so, and it would be the funniest episode ever. We are beyond parody at this point.

South Park is an equal opportunities piss-taker. No one is safe, as it should be.

@MarkCassidy - Actually, no. Jokes at the expense of the powerless are not the same thing as jokes at the expense of the powerful.
malschla
malschla - 10/14/2023, 9:48 AM
@ClintThaHamster - who is powerless?
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 10/14/2023, 10:02 AM
@ClintThaHamster - I agree, but they're not really making the jokes at the expense of those people as much as they are the corporations/studios.
Clintthahamster
Clintthahamster - 10/14/2023, 11:36 AM
@malschla - Powerless is probably overly glib, but "equal opportunity offender" usually means "punching down" (jokes aimed at people with disabilities, racial and religious minorities, LGBTQ folks) as often as, or more often than, "punching up" (jokes aimed at police, government, organized religion.)

Yes, a sophisticated adult audience is capable of discerning nuance, but how much of South Park's audience is made up of sophisticated, discerning, media literate adults, and how much of it is made up of middle schoolers, casual racists, and, perhaps worst of all, website commenters!
Shivermetimbers
Shivermetimbers - 10/14/2023, 11:50 AM
@ClintThaHamster - you must be a lot of fun at parties.
Clintthahamster
Clintthahamster - 10/14/2023, 12:06 PM
@MarkCassidy - That's almost certainly their intent, but their slap-dash production schedule, limited episode length, need to serve ongoing character arcs, and obligatory helping of scatological and "edgy" humor, means that some nuance will certainly be lost in the process.
Clintthahamster
Clintthahamster - 10/14/2023, 12:08 PM
@Shivermetimbers - Don't go to parties much anymore, being an old, but I am beloved by bartenders and patrons alike at as many as TWO (2) bars within a 10 minute ride of my house.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 10/14/2023, 12:38 PM
@ClintThaHamster - I'm sure it will, but is that really their concern? I mean, some people are always going to misunderstand or misinterpret fiction, but that shouldn't be a reason to tone anything down or give any particular group a pass. Again, there are obviously different levels and you could argue that they have gone a bit far sometimes, but as long as they're distributing their shots fairly - and it's funny - I'll keep watching.
malschla
malschla - 10/14/2023, 1:15 PM
@ClintThaHamster - Do you watch the show? Their most common targets of ridicule are government and religion. In fact, in this case, they aren’t making fun of minorities at all, if you understand what they are parodying.

This appears to be a case of offense only when it is something you prefer.
Clintthahamster
Clintthahamster - 10/14/2023, 1:37 PM
@malschla - I haven't watched the show since the 90s, no, and I'm not actually offended by this episode. I don't actually give a shit. I'm just tired of people saying shit like "They're an equal opportunity offender" about insult comics and shows like South Park and Family Guy. If one is insulting everyone equally, then one will inevitably hit a target that can't defend itself from time to time. I'd say they're hit rate is about 50/50, but, again, I haven't watched in decades. I thought the first movie was very funny, and really enjoyed their episode on Joseph Smith.
Clintthahamster
Clintthahamster - 10/14/2023, 1:40 PM
@MarkCassidy - Distributing one's shots evenly means hitting marginalized targets just as often as they hit targets in positions of power, and, more importantly, demonstrates a lack of point of view.
malschla
malschla - 10/14/2023, 9:02 PM
@ClintThaHamster - so you’re against the term even if it is appropriately used?
Clintthahamster
Clintthahamster - 10/15/2023, 10:27 AM
@malschla - "so you’re against the term even if it is appropriately used?"

If you're talking about "equal opportunity offender," then yes. I prefer comedy that targets the actual "bad guys" without also feeling the need to convey those same "bad guys'" point of view. Same kind of "neutrality" that's killing journalism right now.
malschla
malschla - 10/15/2023, 12:16 PM
@ClintThaHamster - who determines who the “bad guys” are?
