Summer 2011: The Season of Heroes

Summer 2011: The Season of Heroes

This summer will be one of the biggest in recent history for us comic-book fans. Here's my take on this summer's biggest films and how I think they will do going up against each other.

The Green Lantern:
Release Date: July 17th
In a universe as vast as it is mysterious, a small but powerful force has existed for centuries. Protectors of peace and justice, they are called the Green Lantern Corps. A brotherhood of warriors sworn to keep intergalactic order, each Green Lantern wears a ring that grants him superpowers. But when a new enemy called Parallax threatens to destroy the balance of power in the Universe, their fate and the fate of Earth lie in the hands of their newest recruit, the first human ever selected: Hal Jordan.

In my opinion, this is the most important for DC in recent history, in a few different ways.
With the Batman trilogy coming to an end soon, they're going to be looking for another new big franchise and the Green Lantern could be that franchise.
Also, the Green Lantern is one of the most popular DC characters, he's right up there with Batman, and Superman, and if this film doesn't deliver, they're going to have a virtual hell storm of angry fanboys.

Here's where the problem arises, quite frankly, it's just not looking good for our emerald hero. We haven't seen much in the form of advertising besides a lot of poor looking toys and Halloween costumes, and some childrens books, which is making it seem like DC is going for more of a kid friendly movie, rather than worrying about appealling to the fans.
Then there's the one trailer we got, and we've seen nothing else in the way of footage since with no new updates on when we might see more, and in all honesty, we need more not only because we're curious and excited, but because the first trailer was mediocre at best, and most people have been basing their opinions on the film off of that footage alone, which isn't exactly a good thing. We need not only more footage, but more interesting footage, show us more of Hal Jordan in action.
I also really hope that Hal's friend we saw in the trailer, the man with glasses and a perm, doesn't turn into the next Jar Jar Binks, fingers crossed.

That all being said, I'm a huge fan of the Green Lantern, and I want this film to be able to stand up to the likes of Thor and Captain America, but frankly I don't think it will, I think the potential was/is there, but it's looking like they may have gone in the wrong direction with it. Of course I'm judging my opinion off of the one piece of footage we have, so I reiterate my point, we need more footage! If the studios want the fans to rush out and pile into the theatres in swarms for this movie, they need to give us a good reason to and so far I've yet to see one other than the fact that I love the comics and the character himself.

Captain America: The First Avenger:
Release Date: July 22nd
After being deemed unfit for military service, Steve Rogers volunteers for a top secret research project that turns him into Captain America, a superhero dedicated to defending America's ideals.

I'll admit, Captain America is a comic book hero that I know little about, having said that, I think this movie has the potential to be the biggest comic book movie coming out this Summer for the simple fact that, well he's frickin Captain America, he is the symbol of America and everything it stands for as much as Superman is.

We've seen a lot to do with this film, set photos, concept art, promo images, and the recent Super Bowl spot, and by the looks of things, it wont disappoint, everything about this movie looks amazing. They've made this film a period piece, which is hard enough to do on it's own, but they've also made it a superhero movie, which is damn near impossible to do without screwing everything up, and just from what we've seen, it looks like they've managed to ground this film in a the same way that Nolan gave us Batman.

Captain America isn't one of my favorite comic-book characters, I've never bought any of the comics, but none of that will stop me from being in line the day this movie comes out. I'm extremely interested in this film even though I'm not a big fan of the comics, and I think that's exactly what the film makers were trying to accomplish when they set out to make this movie.

Thor:
Release Date: May 6th
The powerful but arrogant warrior Thor is cast out of the fantastic realm of Asgard and sent to live amongst humans on Earth, where he soon becomes one of their finest defenders.

There isn't a whole lot I can say about Thor, before this film was being made, I knew little to nothing about the character other beyond my idea of him some viking with a sledge hammer, and I had little interest to learn more about him. As far as I was concerned, the only superheroes who mattered were Superman, Batman, and Green Lantern. As soon as I saw the first promotional image for this movie, that all changed, it became Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, and Thor.

This movie looks amazing, that's the simple way to put it. The cast is amazing, I will admit that when I first heard that Anthony Hopkins was going to be in a comic book movie like Thor, it made me laugh, I thought it would be the worst decision ever but after seeing the pictures, and his performance in the trailer, I'm convinced that he was the right choice, maybe not the best choice as far as looks go, but I think will bring the character of Odin to life perfectly.

I have read the script for Thor, I've read it 3 times as a matter of fact, and it's one of the best written scripts I've read in a long time, everything just comes together perfectly. The entire time I was reading it, I could see everything playing out in my head as if I was there watching the film in the theatre. Everything was amazingly written, each character had his own distinctions, no two characters blurred together and not being familiar with the story, I had no troubles telling who was who in the group. I hae extremely high expectations for this movie, and I know I wont be disappointed when I see the finished product.

X-Men: First Class:
Release Date: June 3rd
Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were archenemies, they were closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto's Brotherhood and Professor X's X-MEN

Oh my, X-Men: First Class... What can be said about this movie that hasn't been said a million times. Now I'm not going to rant on for 3 paragraphs about how much this movie is going to suck so don't worry.

I honestly don't know what to think about this movie, yes they've completely screwed up the origins of the X-Men, and are severely messing with continuity on the other films, but I mean come on, how many times have other super heroes had their origins changed or re-done in a new and different way.
People will go see this movie for the simple fact that its the X-Men, we all love them no matter what. I just rewatched the entire first season of the X-Men cartoon from the 90's and as soon as I heard that classic theme song I smiled, yea the artwork was bad, the writing wasn't great, but I loved it for the simple fact that it's the X-Men, and that's the same reason why this film will do at least half decent at the box office, it wont be the smash hit of the summer, but it'll do just fine.

Now, that being said, I don't like anything I've seen about this film so far, nothing has made me get all gitty and excited for it's release. Not because they'e been screwing with the characters or story, just for the simple fact that I'm impressed with what I've seen so far.
In my opinion Beast looks like the cat-man monster thing from 'Sleepwalkers', Google it, you'll agree with me.

Well there you have it, that's my take on this summers upcoming big comic book movies.
I think there will be two seperate battles to be the best, Captain America will be battling Thor, and then in the other category we'll have the X-Men going up against Green Lantern.. You guys have no idea how much it hurts me to group the Green Lantern in with X-Men: First Class, but who knows, maybe once we see some more footage, we'll have a three way battle between Thor, Captain America, and Green Lantern. Sorry X-Men fans, I just don't think First Class has what it takes to compete.

So the author is not excited for Green Lantern cause there were not alot of action in the trailer. So you need to see stuff blowing up every 15 seconds to be pumped about a movie.

What is wrong in the direction they are going with the movie?

I know where your comming from with GL, The perm guy, the whole "i know right" douch moment. its really hard to get a bead on it. but remember all the hate watchmen got, we know how that turned out. best cmb ever!!! and of course its going to be kid friendly you kow how many toys they can pump out from this thing they would be crazy not to frm a money stand point
I had no faith in cap till i saw 30 seconds of footage and now im sold!
Thor has looked good from the begining but i have not red the script so i dont know wht they are going to do for filler cause 2 hours of hammer smashing can get boring i hope its good tho.
and your not missing much by not having read the comics cap was always a lame character and thor was too but for some reason i think they will translate well into movies just like iron man did
x-men no comment ill go see it but i have no hope

Basically you were saying that in the comment that they need to show more interesting stuff like Hal in action So by that that mean a bunch of action in the trailer. Thor and Cap trailer was average at best with cap jumping in slo mo and a woman shooting bullets at a armor and thor doing wrestling dropkicks on screen.

From the trailers Gl has showed the most while showing little at all. There is a theme throughout the whole trailer of fear, Hal going through trails while overcoming it. Hal is acting like he does to his comic parts. Kilowog, Tomar Re, Sinestro, Arbin Sur, and Oa look absolutely amazing in the trailer. As a Green Lantern fan, the first trailer should be right up your alley cause they look gorgeous on screen. There is more to the trailer than what people are seeing.

While you say Warner needs to show more of Gl, why Thor and Cap does not need more. How is Thor and Cap gonna deliver on the their movie and their trailer does not tell much of there story other than thor getting banned from his home world. They have not shown any more of there movies than GL have and their movies come out before GL.

Plus, please name the bad decisions they have made basing on 2 minutes of footage. If you haven't seen at least 40 minutes of footage, then it is too early to even make that claim.

A great read. I have been a Thor nut since 1966. Green Lantern was also a favorite of mine. If you still have a copy of that script I would kill to see it. (Well, almost) lol

@ gmoney0505

Dude you are getting overly defensive with the criticism of the GL trailer. Obviously you saw a lot in it that many people did not. I am not a GL or DC fan but I have several friends who are hardcore DC/GL fanboys and none of them loved the trailer. The most fanatical GL fan amongst them hates it!

I don't hate it but I can list off some things for you:
1) the tone comes across as campy.
2) Hal Jordan seems overly comedic; even i know that from reading maybe 1 or 2 GL comics 20 years ago.
3) Oa does not look great; the CGI looks weak.
4) The GL costume bothers many fans; incidentally I have no problem with it.
5) HJ's friend reminds you of JJB or that annoying roommate in TF2.
6) The comedy was not funny.
7) Blake Lively's acting seemed poor. That does not say she will be bad throughout the movie but a trailer is supposed to select highlights of acting, dialogue, visuals, and action to impress and lure in an audience. If that scene was a highlight for her then questions need to be asked.
8) The construct CGI looked weak.
9) There were no WOW moments; it was all meh. As a non-fan looking for something to WOW me and draw me in there was nothing.

On the other hand I agree with you, Kilowog, Tomar Re, and Sinestro looked good.

Now let's not start an argument. I believe the trailer was rushed out to be attached to Harry Potter and I think that when the real trailer comes out it will be blow-mind. I also believe that the movie will be at least good. However the people who have criticised the movie based on the trailer have valid points.

@Coldblood6

I am not overly offensive of the trailer. I think other people over analyze the trailer like with comments stating the movie will be filled with comedy based on the trailer when it only have 15 secs of comedy and the rest of the 2 minutes is seriousness.

How is HJ's friend reminds you JJB when he only says 2 things in the trailer and they are not even comedic dialogue. "What happens now?" is a comedic question.

For unfinished CGI and where the film was at when the trailer was released, the CG looks incredible.

I disagree with your points except for 7 with Lively.

I have to ask you about 9 when you saw the moments were meh. In the other trailers, were there spectacular wow moments in those?

I'm looking forward to all of these super hero movies!

I haven't followed Green Lantern for a long time now but it won'y stop me going to the movie!

@gmoney

Then we will have to agree to disagree. I don't think people are over-analysing the trailer. I think you are over-analysing it to find things that are good.

All those things hit you in the face immediately. I can tell you flat out that in my very first viewing of the trailer every point there stuck out like a sore thumb except the costume thing which I picked up from my GL fan friends. If you think that the CGI looks incredible then power to you and please let me know where I can get a pair of those fanboy glasses. HJ's friend is not out and out comedic but he gives you that vibe of the funny / annoying sidekick. Again that stands out immediately to people who have seen many movies.

As for WOW moments:

In THOR: Odin's performance and the emotion in the scene of Thor's banishment, especially when Odin rips Mjolnir away from Thor; the hammer throw and come back, the Destroyer attack on SHIELD, and Thor's lightning ground smash.

In Captain America: the effects of making Chris Evans look like a weakling and the glimpse of the shield ricochet back at the end. Admittedly this was only 30 seconds.

@ Comedian03

Thanx for being rational. As a GL fan you should be looking forward to it the most. I'm mainly an X-men fan and I am cursed with a franchise that has become an abomination. Admittedly XMFC looks really good but the trailers to X3 looked good to.

I actually think that you GL fans will get a good movie.

However I will make no predictions about box office as I really cant evaluate the average moviegoer (avmg) and what they will like. And it is the average moviegoer who will determine the success of these movies; not comic book fans.

From what I can tell from my co-workers they think THOR looks really good and are looking forward to it but there are mixed views on CA. A couple said good but others said only OK. I believe the costume will be an issue to some moviegoers. I don't know what they think of GL.

All in all, it will be an interesting summer.

@Coldblood6

Odin speech was superb, a WOW moment. Perfectly written and executed. But everything else was average at best. Destroyer attack on SHIELD was not a WOW moment just stuff blowing up. The little portal was incomplete CG that he went through when he got banish. Thor's lighting smash can be a WOW moment if the effects were done, but they are not done.

Making Chris Evans look like that in the beginning was awesome, but everything else is average. Getting bullets riochet off a shield is not a WOW moment. Seen that millions of time on film.

But if the rest of the average scenes are WOW moments why OA isn't a WOW moment with the central battery coming out at the ends? Why his ring which looks like an awesome piece of alien jewelry not a WOW moment. The CG characters in the trailer weren't WOW moments? Hal leaving Earth's atmosphere and entering OA atmosphere flying to the planet is more of a WOW moment than 99% of everything in other trailers.

I am not a fanboy and do not have glasses on. 90% of CG in the GL trailer looked great. Other 10% don't at the moment and people blowing it out of proportion. The only CG that doesn't at the moment is the suit at the end. Since both Mark Strong and Ryan wore CG outfits for their suit, I am expecting it to look like Sinestro's at least when the next trailer released. All the movies have shown incomplete CG but GL gets the hardest treatment out of all of them.
Coldblood6
Coldblood6 - 2/17/2011, 9:37 AM
Yeah dude you do have fanboy glasses on. A ring/alien jewelry a wow moment??? That's a fanboy moment. That's like just seeing Mjolnir is a wow moment. It would not be.

I can tell you from personal experience as a comicbook fan, but not a GL fan, there was nothing that wowed me. I was hard pressed to watch it a second time and I've never watched it a 3rd time. And I'm telling you none of my DC/GL fans thought that there was anything wow about it. They are all glum over how it looked, angry over the mischaracterisation of HJ, and desperate that the next trailer will show something impressive.

I'm not a Thor fan. I actually don't like his character in the comics because I think he is a walking Deus Ex Machina. However I can tell you that the trailer wowed me; I've watched it countless times. When it showed in my theatre in front of TRON the entire sold out theatre was vocally excited. Every single person at my work, all non comic book people, were wowed by it and are eager to see it.

Anyway continuing this discussion is pointless. I'm happy for you that you found that trailer awesome.

But understand this. The majority of everyone else did not! This is a simple undeniable fact. And thus they have a right to be critical of it.
