Earlier in the year The Birth Of A Nation premiered at Sundance Film Festival. It became so highly praised at the film festival that studios & other media platforms began a bidding war to have this film in their corner come Oscar season. Refusing to take the highest bid offered by Netflix for fear the academy does not yet recognize films on their platform. They opted out for a theatrical release with Fox Instead.
Unfortunately The Birth Of A Nation has bigger problems when it comes to being consider for an Oscar nomination. Actor Nate Parker (Non-Stop) who directorial debut is this film. Has a ghost from his past coming back to diminish his work. I decided to ignore the controversy around the film out of respect for the film & subject matter itself.
With that clean slate in mind, how well did the story of preacher/slave Nat Turner fair as Oscar bait? Find out below!
