Where have all the good actors gone?

Where have all the good actors gone?

A thought that recently struck me about the lack of rising talent.

I have recently been working on a casting fic that has a large amount of young minority members. And when I was involved in casting those roles I realized that lately it seems that there are fewer and fewer decent up and coming actors. Now I'm sure I'll come across as a racist bastard, which I assure you I am not. I could honestly only find one or two up and coming actors and actresses that I actually liked, including whites.

The main problem is that now the media is judging actors not on their merit as in days of old, but on their pure sex appeal. Hollywood is now giving more roles to the blondes, or the Megan Foxs, Lindsay Lohans, and Zack Effrons of this world. Whatever happened to actors that got roles solely on their abilities. The Katherine Hepburns, the Jimmy Stuarts, and the Sydney Poitiers, actors that had actual true abilities, not just looks. Now I admit there are some talented actors and actresses out there, you have Jamie Foxx, Johnny Depp, Keira Knightly (who I think of as the next Katherine Hepburn,) and a few others. With the exception of Keira, they are getting up there in age, and we don't have that many people coming up to replace them. I mean who is the Denzel Washington for the next generation? Ashton Kutcher? I have yet to see a male single actor under 22 that has half Denzel Washington's presence.

And rather than give roles to upcoming actors with actual talent, movie studios would rather give them to rappers and singers that have no talent. A role that could go to Meagan Good would be rewritten so that Beyonce could play it, or a role for Anthony Mackie will be rewritten for Common. The studios will rather settle for someone with a known name and less skill, than take a chance on an actor that may have some real skill.

In my time of trouble I turned towards my niece and nephews as to what actors they like, and I get bombarded by the Disney brigade for my troubles. I get to hear of the wondrous natures and abilities of Hannah Montana, the Jonas Brothers, Kyle Massey, Ashley Tisdale, Zac Effron, and Brenda Song. I honestly felt a little sick, sick that this is what the next generation is growing up with. They don't know to expect any better from actors. The younger generations are losing sight of actual talent and only relying on what the media feeds down their throats. Our generation isn't much better, look at the magazine stand next time you go to the store. I guarantee you that there is at least one magazine with Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, or Jennifer Aniston on it. Hell, I fear that even this site is starting to get as bad. We are suggesting people for roles and talking about Megan Fox and Beyonce based solely on their looks not their actual acting abilities.

I don't want our future generations growing up with only the Megan Fox's and the Beyonce's as an inspiration. Do you? I grew up looking up to Denzel Washington, Sam Elliot, Harrison Ford, and Morgan Freeman, actors with real caliber. I fear that this generation may have missed out on real role models.

Don't get mad at me, this is my opinion. If you can suggest any good young actors, I would appreciate it, and sorry about my rant there.

Thank you for your time,
HAWK out

I never really thought about it,but now that you mention it I started to think. WHO...I couldnt really come up with anyone. I think part of the reason is that T.V. is full of reality T.V.stars there's only a handful of shows that come on network T.V. that's worth looking at. Now I know we're talking BIG SCREEN movie stars...maybe they're doing theater honing their skills.

HAWK - Don't apoloigze, you have EVERY right to rant! You REALLY want to know where all the good actors are at? They're in THEATER! What sef-respecting actor would associate themeselves with mediums that glorify scripted and set-up 'reality' shows, over-compensating Disney brats and surgically-enhanced 'beauties' who couldn't find their own @sses with two hands and a compass? Yes, OCCASIONALLY there are shows and films that have top-notched actors with riviting plots and decent character development, but unfortunately (as you so elloquently point out) these seem to be the exception, not the norm. The rest is just mindless drivel filled with fluff, airheads and explosions - par for the course in Hollywood.

@Teabag. Maybe, but come on, Nick Jonas is a great actor?? HELL NO!

@BLADE4040. You're right! It's because of all the reality TV. The sad thing is that nowadays directors don't look to the theaters anymore.

@Loganoneil. I'm a patron of the theater, I may live in culture starved Georgia (All we have is music, no theater) But I enjoy the theater, I am one of the few people that knew who Tom Hiddleston was when he was cast as Loki, because I have seen him on stage in Cymbeline I believe, He is going to be amazing in the role of Loki by the way.

But most directors don't bother looking to the theater for good actors anymore, they prefer "known faces" Hiddleston only got the role because Branagh is one of the exceptions to the norm, he is quite familiar with the theater and can recognize true talent. I remember when being a Juliard graduate ment something in Hollywood, but now we have actors that barely completed high school in starring roles. Everything on TV is going towards reality TV as BLADE pointed out, or teen melodramas and that is deplorable. Decent TV is dead. Supernatural is a good show, but everything else on that network is melodramas!

I'm sick and tired of hearing people talking about how Twilight is the greatest love story ever. What it is is this: the author took everything that was good from Romeo and Juliet, and took that out and threw some sparrking vampires in it! But that is what the people of the new generation think good literature is!

I ranted again

Amen to that, preach on brother HAWK... PREACH ON!

'Romeo & Juliet' + the Sookie Sackhouse novels (aka 'True Blood') - sex & violence + glitter = 'Twilight'

...and if anyone wants to see a better version of 'Romeo & Juliet' with vapires and werewolves, chew on this - 'UNDERWORLD' and 'TRUE BLOOD'!

ya hawk this is a good article and im 20 years old so i was around for when denzel and all of the really good actors were still doin their thing but i can think of a few actors that are really good nowadays leo dicaprio is one of my fav actors if you think wrong watch the departed one of the best performances in recent movies,also i think matt damon, mark wahlberg,garrett hedlund is up and comin he just needs to have a break out role,christian bale is a very good actor regardless of his personality,vin diesel is alright not the best but hes been good in the movies ive seen him in(except for strays which sucked haha),ben foster is also really good(plays the best psycho ive ever seen) ,derek luke will be really good just needs to be in more movies,youre right about actresses though i cant think of too many that i would rather see act then just put somethin in them lol but i like keira as you said also natalie portman, but these are just my opinion i could think of more but i dont wanna take up the whole page haha

whoa i was just talking about this with my dad the other day. we were trying to list the best actors we know and i'm a little on the young side but i really couldnt think of anyone young. i mean shia lebouf isnt to bad, but we were naming people like denzel washington, clint eastwood, morgan freeman, phillip seymor hoffman, al pacino, robert deniro you know, the greats. people that have acutally made a name for themselves based on their talent. but yeah man, i completely get what your saying, when i'm 30 somthing i dont want to see former disney stars in every single movie thats out.

@Sabretooth. I like all of those guys too, but they are all in their 30's or 40's so they are the outgoing generation.

@NJdevil12. Well, it seems like you are a cultured fellow, you named off some greats there. I too fear that we will lose actors like that and be stuck with the New Mouseketeers. I mean Clint Eastwood is retired form acting, Morgan Freeman is considering retirement since his wreck, Paul Newman died, all the best actors are disapearing.

And those are some good actresses, Anne Hathaway is one of the few good things to come from Disney.

@SlurpeeGuy. Bight your tongue!

@Spock. Long time no see buddy! And yeah those are some good names.

I can honestly say that the way the media shows off actors, they are sending mixed messages. The media has been saying for years that YOU are special. As long as you have big biceps or look hot in any way. I miss the days of yore when talent was everywhere. Now the media is forcing people to believe that the only way you can have talent is if you look good or act a certain way and it ticks me off. I have nothing against those who aspire to act, like those on Disney Channel. But I wish that they would show some sort of improvement from their first day of shooting. Of course this may be asking too much. They get paid a handsome sum to keep their mouths shut, then smile and nod.
I have been aspiring to be an actor for a couple of years but I know that I need to work on my craft before I audition for a role. I know that I have improved since 9th grade. I wish other actors could say the same.
THEHAWK
THEHAWK - 8/3/2009, 9:05 PM
Very valid points Wadey. The media only showcases a certain 'type' of actor and that is the type of person taht kids think they need to be. My wife's neice wants to die her red head platnium blonde, so she can look like Hannah Montanna.

I too have acted, never profesionally, only some small theater in college and when I was in Europe. But it is a craft that must constantly be honed, when I played Lysander in 10th grade I was a crappy actor and when I played Puck in college I was slightly better considering tha I had not acted but a few times. And I was better still a few years down the road when I played my favorite Iago. The point is that it is something that you must constatnly better yourselves at. But acotrs nowadays don't care about honing their craft, no they care only or the zeroes Disney signs on thier checks.

HAWK: I wonder who voted thumbs down on this thread...ah whatever probally the superdude everyone hates lol. Man I had typed up this great reply as to where all the good actors have gone and ....BAM error on page and I couldnt post it. So Im just going to sum it up like this. The younger generation... it seems actors and fan alike could care less about good acting.Lets just look good be sexyy,sluty,foul mouth,blood and gore to hell with storylines,character development,and plots just LOOK GOOD.I mention how in hollywood BLACK MOVIES ARE ALSO SUFFERING FROM THIS SAME TYPE THING THEY ONLY USE 8-12 OF THE SAME OLD ACTORS. mORRIS cHESTNUT,sHEMAR mOORE,blair underwood,viv a.FOX,Queen LATIFFA,LL cool J,GABRIELLA UNION,AND A FEW MOORE. sAME TYPE STORYLINE AND THE ACTORS REALLY doesnt give you anything.Thats why you dont see Will Smith,Jada Pickett,DENZEL,Angela Basset,Whoppi Goldberg,or Morgan Freeman in any of those movies. Just like mainstream hollywood and especially T.V.,Van Damm,and Steven Seagal straight to dvd kings their just pushing out movies to line their pockets. The crappy actors are the whores ,we're the John's and the movie exec are the PIMPS making that money on a worn out product. Every now and then a Matt Damon OR A Harrison Ford type performer will grace us with a great preformance then it's back to the same ole crap..hit and miss. I've been saying it for awhile now with the THOR movie getting ready to come out...we're going to need someone with a theatrical background to play that part. You cant convince me that there isnt a 6'3-6'6 muscular athletic guy with a theater background somewhere in the U.S. or overseas thats not just prefect for this part. We all know whats going to probally happen ...just like the black movies we're going to get someone who's already someone else ...like Ryan Reynolds is already DEADPOOL. BOTTOM LINE WE NEED TO START or I should say the movie big wigs should start combing the theaters FROM L.A. to NYC to OVERSEAS to find fresh new talent. If they did that we wouldnt be having DEADPOOL also becoming GL,probally wouldnt be this huge debate over who's going to be CAP and so on, because we'd have a pool of talent to pick from.
ThunderCougarFalconBird
ThunderCougarFalconBird - 8/4/2009, 5:41 AM
Movies are heading down the the same road music has been on for some time. Talent isn't nurtured in the right way anymore (if at all!). Actors, like singers are becoming disposable tools used to sell a product for as much money as quickly as possible. Best way to do that is to get the "it boy/girl" signed up for as much as possible before interest is lost. The bottom line is the big wigs care about money, not people. They see the quick dollar and nothing else. The best actors around today are the ones who turned their backs on all that, Depp is a fine example. He could have easily made millions without needing to put any effort in. But he walked away and decided to work hard. Hollywood shunned him for it but he became a much better actor and his talent gave Hollywood no choice but to acknowledge him again.

THEHAWK - 8/4/2009, 6:36 AM
@BLADE. A Hannah Montana fan probably did the thumbs down ;-)

You summed exactly how I feel, its all about sex, why do you think Megan Fox has a job. You're right the execs need to start looking to the theaters for talent once more. I mean there are thousands of men and women in New York alone that act in the theater and have far greater skill than Megan Fox. They need to give these people a shot, rather than whore out the same tired old actors. And please never mention Seagal of Vann Damm again! I almost threw up.

The movies are full of stereotypes: In horror movies the boyfriend dies, or is the killer, and the last girl always lives. There is always a whore in the movie who usually dies. And the black guy is usually in it representing some archaic stereotype, with lines like "Damn" or "Shit!" I mean look at Tyrese Gibson in the new Transformers movie, his few lines had something of the like in them, he has a lot of potential as an actor, but its waisted on lines like those. But it was Michael Bay, so what do you expect.

@Howlett. I'm not going to even get started on music, that is an entirely new can of worms for me. Depp is a dying breed of actor, his kind are dissapearing, leaving us with the Megan Fox's.

HEY I really cant blame any of them I'D LOVE TO GET PIMPED OUT TO YOU GUYS...LOL. ACTUALLY I'M trying to break-in into Hollywood as Mr. Background SCENE until I actually HONE my acting skills. I think he could pull it off, but I'm still not sold. I always thought Luke Cage needed someone with a better build and a stronger voice. I know he can work on the build. At least he is interested in the role, and can bring star power to it.

Im not really into Transformers took my little boy to the first one he liked it I though it was o.k. Waiting for Trans2 to come out on DVD since he hasnt mention anything about seeing it. @NewAvengers. Thanks man.

@Blade. Michael Clark Duncan is getting a little old for the role. I wouldn't mind Kevin Grevioux, maybe if he inproved his skills more. i mean he has een written for Marvel, and has said he was a fan of the character. I honestly can't think of a big name actor that fits the role, I wouldn't mind seeing an unknown in the role, the only problem with that is the fact that luke Cage is not a widely known character, and with an unknown at the forefront, the film may not perform well at the box office.'

I would like to see a Voltron movie, and that Robotech movie they keep talking about, I was a fan of those two back in the day. I wouldn't mind a live action Tundercats for that matter.

@logan.

"And this weak and idle theme,
No more yielding but a dream,
Gentles, do not reprehend
if you pardon, we will mend.
And, as I am an honest Puck,
If we have unearned luck
Now to 'scape the serpent's tongue,
We will make amends ere long;
Else the Puck a liar call;
So, good night unto you all.
Give me your hands, if we be friends,
And Robin shall restore amends."

Some of the best lines written in the history of theater.

Maybe we're just in the middle of a changing of the guard as to good actors. All the greats are making a couple of movies here and there, the teeny bopping shitactors are making craploads, but when they start to get older and out of style, like New Kids, then the new generation of good actors surfaces. It's like twins, it skips a generation. I don't really know, I'm just hypothesizing to make myself feel better.

HAWK: make-up,lights,cropping come on Micheal Keaton was atleast 40 or he looked it when he was cast as BATMAN. HE'S EXTREMELY SMALL AND MOST PEOPLE LOVED HIM .I DIDNT REALLY CARE FOR KEATON AS BRUCE WAYNE, because I actually had to see his face(not playboy caliber)...LOL BUT HIS Batman WAS DECENT.I KNOW IN THE PAST I'VE HAMMERED KEATON AS BATMAN ,BUT I SIT DOWN A FEW WEEKS AGO AND WATCH BATMAN again and his version of BATMAN WAS GOOD. Kevin Grevioux wasnt he in the UNDERWORLD movies? I think he also has some writing credits for the movie he my need to tone down the voice and I think he has a theatrical background Im not sure.

@NJdevil. Terry Crews is an interesting suggestion, he has the looks, but I can't look at him in a movie without thinking about 'Friday After Next' lol. That scene was a complete rip off of 'Stir Crazy'(Richard Pryor, Gene Wilder) or as the singing guy in Click.

@Tobuttica. I'd like to think that is the case, but I doubt it.

@BLADE. Crews has done smoe serious roles, like Terminator Salvation and Street Kings. I'd have gone with him about 9 years ago for Cage, there is only so much make up and CGI can do to a face before it starts looking doctored.

For Cage, I think he should be someone in their early thirties. But we can't have a pretty boy in the role, Cage has been around the block a few times, he has experience and strength that an actor would need to be able to portray onscreen. I know Tyrese Gibson can portray the confident angle, but I really don't see him as that intimadating. Now he would be a good Goliath, or Falcon but I don't see him as Luke Cage.

And yeah Grevioux actually wrote Underworld while working as a microbioligist. Yet another example of someone that may hae missed their calling in life.
