As an unabashed Nolanite...I would hire a director for a Batman film in that mold. In fact Warner Brothers should forget the current trajectory of its DC universe and restart from Man of Steel using the Dark Knight trilogy as a backdrop. Since Nolan is uninterested in returning, then I would get a well respected director who I think could rival Nolan someday. That man is Swedish filmmaker Tomas Alfredson...

He is the director behind the hauntingly beautiful vampire film - Let The Right One In - so he is no stranger to fantasy yet that movie like the Dark Knight films had a realistic feel to it and his follow up film Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, a spy thriller was a critical darling which featured the former Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman). His next film is a detective film starring Michael Fassbender which will be out this October. Depending on how he does with that film, I believe he could rival the creativity of Christopher Nolan which is no small feat. Ideally my DC universe (built around the Dark Knight movies) dream team would be comprised of

CREATIVE TEAM
WALLY PFISTER - Who would be in charge of creating a shared look and feel for the entire DC film universe and making sure it is strategic and consistent.

DAVID GOYER - Who would provide input into the DC story elements to align the movies with the comics as much as possible.

DIRECTORS...

TOMAS ALFREDSON - who would direct films for BATMAN
NEILL BLOMKAMP - who would direct films for CYBORG
JULIA HART - who would direct films for WONDER WOMAN
MARJANE SATRAPI - who would direct films for CAT WOMAN
COLM MCCARTHY - who would direct films for NIGHTWING
BONG JOON-HO - Who would direct films for AQUAMAN
ALEX GARLAND - Who would direct films for GREEN LANTERN
MIKE FLANAGAN - Who would direct films for CONSTANTINE

A look at the filmography of each of these directors would reveal that each one has a strong track record yet none of them are so well known as to price themselves out of Warner Brother's budget. As a former DP for the Dark Knight films, Pfister is uniquely qualified to make sure films have the same look and feel of those early batman films. Each one of the proposed directors have made consistently well received films. In fact thus far, only Neill Blomkamp has one film that is "rotten" on the Rotten Tomatoes site.

It would be hard for DC to go wrong with this strategy.

@Forthas - I feel like leaving The Dark Knight Trilogy alone. It's not common that a trilogy has three great movies, so I feel like it would degrade the quality of it if it were tied in with Man of Steel.

@JamesPunn - I completely understand that point...but...think about it this way...would it have been better to stop with the original Star Wars Trilogy or do you think fans want more sequels. Despite the prequels which was not that well received at the end of the day the original films are still revered.

@Forthas - based on many of his previous comments

1) He's moved on, he's a director now.
2) As a director, he said he would give space to his own cinematographers, I cannot imagine him wanting to dictate to a series of filmmakers what their visual approach should be on their own films, he respects the craft too much.
3) He's not this into superhero movies.

@Forthas - yes. Opportunities are slim as a director for him after Transcendence. Plus The Tick satirizes superhero movies. But again, as a director. He has said he's not going back, and the fact that he'd rather direct that than be a cinematographer (when anyone would want him) speaks volumes to that.
