COMICS: THE PUNISHER Returns For A New Ongoing Series

Ahead of his TV debut on season 2 of Netflix's Daredevil, Marvel has announced that Frank Castle will have criminals of the comic book world shaking in their boots in a new ongoing series from Becky Cloonan (Demo, Gotham Academy) and Steve Dillon (Punisher MAX, Preacher)...

Before Jon Bernthal cracks skulls as Frank Castle on season 2 of Daredevil, we'll be getting a new comic book incarnation of the infamous vigilante courtesy of writer Becky Cloonan and artist Steve Dillon.

Comicbook.com debuted the variant cover to issue #1, and also have an interview with Cloonan, in which she teases her plans for the character by stating: "If you are a criminal, the Punisher is basically Jason Voorhees." I almost feel sorry for the drug dealers that will cross his path in this new series. Get more details on what to expect by checking out the full interview, right HERE

Steve Dillon is an artist...

Not a big fan of his recent work, overly simplistic and kind of lazy looking with few backgrounds. His faces have a tendency to look too similar.

Frank Castle deserves a good movie. Can we get the dude who made John Wick to make a Punisher movie?

Awesome. Been waiting for this announcement. ANAD Marvel finally putting something out that piques my interest.

But Jason Voorhes sucks.

Not a big Cloonan fan, but Dillon on Punisher has always been good.

Wow... that was the best description for Punisher I've ever heard. Not as big a fan of Dillon as I used to be.

When I first saw the headline I was going to make a joke about Marvel changing Frank to a Transgender Asian, but Cloonan's description of him put me at ease. Don't know if it's enough to help Marvel all around, though.

It's difficult not to be pedantic on a comic book site. But do you like Dillon? His Preacher work was good because he was dealing with more fantastic type stuff. I don't think his recent work is that appealing (I'm thinking of Wolverine). It's just kind of boring in terms of design.

@dotanuki

I liked his work on Punisher and Preacher (only read the first volume so far) just because it's kinda unique. It's not as "clean" as most of the other artists I prefer, like Fabok. The only artists I really can't stand are Mike Allred and Javier Pulido.

In what'll probably be better work, Punisher MAX is finally being reprinted and the Complete Collection Vol.1 comes out in January!

I'm the last person to diss artists as i can't draw a circle around a penny, but i don't care for Dillon's work one bit.

@blackandyellow

I definitely recommend Preacher. The story is interesting, perverse and original. It's hard to believe that it's 20 years old. At the time it was so different than everything else on the market which consisted of superheroes, mutants, big guns and pouches!

Ha, FrankenCastle! The Tony Moore art was topnotch though. I actually didn't mind this series as I find the Punisher gunning down criminals only so interesting. It was crazy and completely different for the character. Mark it as an "elseworlds" story.

Frankencastle was better than Avenging Angel Punisher.

I want to be excited for this, but I don't like Dillon's art. Why couldn't they use Alex Maleev? His art in that variant provided is amazing!
Matador
Matador - 10/23/2015, 8:31 AM
@Dotanuki - If it's more a What If story I can see that. But what I like about the Punisher is his just a regular guy trying to cope in a messed up world and bringing criminals down. Pretty much an underdog among all the super powered up beings.

@GliderMan - Daken kills the punisher and makes he becomes Frankencastle.
Dotanuki

@Matador

There have been so many weird Punisher stories that, sure, I'd call it a What If. I mean who can forget this one?

No kidding! Punisher War Journal issues 6 & 7 were great back in the day.

@Dotanuki - I love those for the fact they didn't make castle look like a crazy vigilante but more along the line of Thomas Jane's Punisher a tactician.

I did hate one event in the Civil War with the Punisher that seemed out of character.

They're going to change him to a woman. He'll be the Pussinsher.
Dotanuki
Dotanuki - 10/23/2015, 10:02 AM
@Matador

Yeah, that is somewhat out of character and seems like what Scourge would do. But that's what you get from Millar.

The Punisher is a tough character, no doubt. It's hard for him to function alongside of superhumans and mutants. I think that's why Ennis stuff was good. The Rucka series is pretty good too. Great art.

I first met Becky Cloonan in 1999. She is a bright and upcoming Artist. I think her stories will be fresh and stay within the ideals of the Punisher series. I only hope the Punisher stays a human at the end of his chain who rides the edge of being a criminal himself.
