DUNE Takes In Impressive $37 Million At The International Box Office Following Overseas Debut

Denis Villeneuve's Dune is now playing in several overseas locations, and while the sci-fi adaptation didn't quite reach the $40 million some analysts predicted, it came pretty damn close...

Though Dune is not scheduled to hit U.S theaters until October 21, Denis Villeneuve's highly-anticipated sci-fi adaptation has already begun its international rollout in several overseas locations, and is off to a very strong start.

Prior to the weekend, analysts predicted that the movie could make between $35M-$40M by Monday, and while it's not expected to hit that higher figure, it should take in at least $37 million, breaking pandemic-era box office records in Russia, France, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Ukraine, Hong Kong and Singapore in the process.

This is a very impressive result, especially when you take into account that early projections were closer to just $20 million. Dune opens in the Middle East on September 22, followed by Japan and some other Asian and EMEA markets on October 15, and is expected to perform just as well. It remains to be seen how the film will fare domestically, of course, but this is a very encouraging sign.

In related BO news, Marvel's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has held on to the No. 1 spot for the third week in a row, and now sits at $320.6 million worldwide.

Glad to hear it. The cast alone has me looking forward to seeing it.

@ModHaterSLADE - I don't have a single worry about the actual movie. People often hype Denis as a brilliant visual and technical film maker but I can't understate how strong he is with story when it falls within his wheelhouse. I've enjoyed all of his films from a story and character perspective even more than his captivating world building and visual flare. So with that in mind, I'm confident he would take on this specific story were he not very confident in his abilities to craft something extraordinary.

Hope for humanity right here❤

If this thing reaches 300 million or even 250 million WW then its a win during these times. Yes, under normal circumstances these are awful numbers but bigger picture its great for this film.

I have no hope for this film in the US. Its free on HBO MAX so 25 million at the most. Maybe even 35 million but thats it.

In other words, 'Dune' is performing under expectations. How is this a 'strong start!?"

I wish commentators would start being honest about these things. If they expected $40 million and it earned less than that it underperformed.

Anything else is just spin.

@Kozmik - Ah, i always like seeing people being ignorant of a pandemic that's been going on for close to 2 years now and the implications that it has on box office.

@kylo0607 - Ah, I always like seeing how people make excuses for numbers. '37' is less than '40,' therefore it underperformed.

And I also like how people talk as if they know what countries it was released in when it earned $37 million. Since you don't know you can't speak for how the pandemic effected box office receipts, since individual countries respond to it differently.

@Kozmik - listen you intellectual troglodyte, intially they expected mid 20s. then between 35 and 40. how is 37 under expectations?
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 9/19/2021, 11:06 AM
@Kozmik - 40 was the most it could earn based on the latest projections after it had already surpasses expectations, which were initially closer to 20. Context is key.

@rebellion - Imbecile, you ought to consider reading (you know, before you embarrass yourself further). Did analysts not expect $40 million? Now, how much is $37 million? More or less? You can get help with that if you like.
Kozmik
Kozmik - 9/19/2021, 11:32 AM
@RorMachine - Context is indeed key, which is why it's curious you'd try to distort it. The predictions shifted upward, therefore while it may beat earlier predictions, it failed to meet the most recent.

You don't get to disregard predictions that you don't agree with.

Point being, 'Dune' failed to meet them.

@Kozmik

It was expected to earn less than 37 million. Not sure why your panties are in a bunch.
Kozmik
Kozmik - 9/19/2021, 11:39 AM
@regularmovieguy - Read the article. And as far as 'twisted panties' go, no one needs me to tell them that Warner Bros sacrificing their 2021 slate to prop up their faltering streaming channel would be bad news for their theatrical arm.

If you got a problem with that, blame Warner Bros for an asinine strategy.

@Kozmik I clarified that it didnt quite hit 40. I also said it had a very strong opening, which it did, however you want to slice it. There's no spin here.

It’s worldwide release has had similar numbers to Shang Chi. This is good, and still not sure why this would upset you.

@Kozmik - Uh… the article plainly states this was higher than expected…
ElricReturns
ElricReturns - 9/19/2021, 2:15 PM
@Kozmik - technically you are wrong. It exceeded the first projected expectations then met the second projections perfectly.

The second projection was an estimated range. Anywhere from 30 to 40 million, a ball park figure meant to give a general idea. By saying 40m as their cap was if it overperformed to that margin, they predict it could have but it wasn't an expectation. The expectation was within that ball park. 37 is on the higher range of that ball park.

So it hit expectations, and on the higher end.

Stop spinning this as a negative. It's not.
