STAR TREK: DISCOVERY Season 5 Trailer Teases Another Epic Adventure For Captain Burnham And Her Crew

"Never a dull moment."

That's the bold statement made by Sonequa Martin-Green's Captain Michael Burnham in the first trailer for Star Trek: Discovery's upcoming fifth season. This preview debuted during a panel for the show at New York Comic Con on Saturday, and there's plenty for fans of this franchise to unpack here.

The Umbrella Academy star Callum Keith Rennie, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. alum Eve Harlow, and Shadowhunters' Elias Toufexis are all on board for the Paramount+ series' next season. Rennie will play Starfleet Captain Rayner, a man it's said is struggling to transition from a time of war to a time of peace.

Harlow's Moll and Toufexis's L'ak, meanwhile, are said to be former couriers now on the other side of the law.

In Season 5, Captain Burnham and the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery uncover a mystery that sends them on an epic adventure across the galaxy to find an ancient power whose very existence has been deliberately hidden for centuries. But there are others on the hunt as well...dangerous foes who are desperate to claim the prize for themselves and will stop at nothing to get it.

With so much uncertainty surrounding the Star Trek franchise's future on the big screen, it's good to have a TV show like this to be excited about. Paramount Pictures does have plans for another movie, though the recent loss of director Matt Shakman (who has decided to helm Fantastic Four for Marvel Studios instead) has obviously set the project back somewhat.

Star Trek: Discovery's upcoming fifth season is currently in production in Toronto, Canada. We don't have a confirmed release date, but do know it will premiere on Paramount+ sometime in 2023.

@marvel72 - Star Trek has always been about “woke” culture. Classic series were good about masking the “lesson” too help keep people from being turned off by it. But this show has been lazy about it. For example the non-binanry cast member being frustrated with be labeled. It was done with a very 2021 lens; and the fact that the conversation was with an openly gay man; there was no conflict there was no reason to think he wouldn’t understand. Anyone who puts up a wall when they are approached by a “woke” conversation is not going to be influenced by this conversation.

I also had a problem with the Discovery coming 900 years into the future and yet they are still the smartest people in the room.

@marvel72 - being mad that Star Trek is woke is like being mad that pizza has tomato sauce.

I tried, but I stopped halfway through season 4. It was just uninteresting to me.

Season 5 is what the original deal was for show so this will be the last season unless this season brings in old ST fans or new viewers. This was always getting 5 seasons in case anyone wasn't aware.

Such a shame how this show went, I was so excited for season 1 but they hired people that had no respect for what came before and had no talent to create something new and interesting.

“Another epic adventure “???

The last season was dog shit. The third one had my interest at first because they went like 900 years to the future but that quickly turned to be very disappointing.
I enjoyed the first 2 seasons and I’m hoping they turn this one around. Just stop with all the crying and hugging and telling each other how much they love each other. It’s Star Trek not The Golden Girls.

I dropped off this show at season 2 I think. I really loved its interpretation on Pike though, so I checked out Strange New Worlds. I hope I'm not alone in saying how good Strange New Worlds is.

I'm no fan of star trek.. Always thought it was boring as [frick]... Except for the First two Pine movies... But this one takes the cake in being boring and just plain stupid...

Haven’t seen a lot of this series.

I’ve found Strange New Worlds to be VASTLY superior.

I can see I am the minority but I do enjoy Discovery a lot. It does have a lot of flaws, but it does entertain me.

Season 1 was good, although didn't like the Klingon aspects. Season 2 almost made me stop watching completely. Season 3 I thought was great, however I have to catch up on four which its kind of hard to get someone's opinion on it without mentioning how they just stopped watching it or just don't like it.

I gotta catch up on these shows honestly.

@HWestRE420 - Season 4 was definitely better than what the comments here reflect, at least in my eyes, but yeah it had its flaws too.

I don't believe I have ever seen a series, Trek or not, that was consistently outstanding for each and every one of the seasons it existed. ST Discovery is no different. Some seasons of Discovery I really liked, some others were just ok. I said here before, it did get a little too weepy the last season, especially from the Captain's chair but I hope it rectifies that this upcoming season. The last season of Picard really suffered as it stayed so earthbound and lost that space feeling. This upcoming final season from the trailer looks fantastic though. Hopefully Discovery will be as fantastic as Picard looks to be next season.
