Select STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI Scenes Will Get The IMAX Treatment

IMAX and Lucasfilm have announced that select scenes from Rian Johnson's Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be captured using IMAX's extremely high resolution cameras. Read on for more details!

J.J. Abrams set an iconic precedent when he used IMAX® cameras in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and now IMAX and Lucasfilm have announced that director Rian Johnson plans to do the same for key sequences of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. IMAX's ultra high-resolution cameras deliver audiences greater scope and increased image quality for stunning footage and a uniquely immersive viewing experience. 

The news was announced Wednesday as part of an extended slate deal between IMAX and Walt Disney Studios. The two companies have enjoyed a long-standing relationship and are continuing their multi-faceted agreement with a new multi-picture deal that extends through 2019. This includes highly anticipated live-action and animated releases from Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar, Marvel and Lucasfilm. 

Highlights of the agreement include IMAX's involvement in the following projects:
  • Lucasfilm: An untitled Indiana Jones film, untitled Han Solo Star Wars anthology film, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and Star Wars: Episode IX
  • Marvel: Black Panther, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Captain Marvel, Avengers: Infinity War, and an untitled Avengers sequel to be shot entirely with IMAX cameras  
  • Disney: Beauty and the Beast, A Wrinkle in Time, and Mulan
  • Pixar: The Incredibles 2, and Toy Story 4
  • Walt Disney Animation Studio: Wreck-It Ralph sequel

Each film will be digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality audiences have come to expect from the IMAX experience. Star Wars: The Last Jedi, is scheduled for release on December 15, 2017.
