Carrie Fisher portrayed, the iconic princess-turned-general, Leia Organa, across five Star Wars films. She sadly passed away in December of 2016 at the age of 60. In response to this; a subset of Star Wars fans are petitioning for three-time Academy Award winner Meryl Streep to be cast as the new Leia in Star Wars: Episode IX.

The petition, launched ahead of Star Wars: The Last Jedi's theatrical debut in December, has since gained support from over 7,800 signees - putting the online petition within reach of its 8,000 signature goal. The petition is addressed to Disney, Lucasfilm, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, and Episode IX co-writer and director J.J. Abrams. It reads:

After the death of Carrie Fisher, there have been a lot of uncertainties in how STAR WARS Episode IX is going to deal with Leia. As Lucasfilm claimed that they have no plans to digitally recreate Carrie Fisher with CGI in STAR WARS Episode IX, the more possible solutions are to recast Leia or to write her out of the film.

As Lucasfilm claimed that they have no plans to digitally recreate Carrie Fisher with CGI in STAR WARS Episode IX, the more possible solutions are to recast Leia or to write her out of the film.

As the fans of STAR WARS and Carrie Fisher, we really want Leia to shine in Episode IX and we certainly do not want her to be written out of the film abruptly without a reasonable plot. Therefore, recasting Leia is a more ideal option for us and we believe that Meryl Streep is an ideal candidate to play Leia.

A personal friend of Fisher's, Streep honored the departed actress during the 2017 Golden Globes ceremony by recalling a quote attributed to Fisher: "Take your broken heart, make it into art."

Streep once famously played a version of Carrie Fisher in Postcards from The Edge, and already has some insight into Carrie Fisher's mind space when it comes to inhabiting this particular sci-fi icon.

What do you think would be the best way to solve this conudrum? Would you be okay with Streep taking over in the role?

Richard Harris's family wanted his friend Peter O'Toole to take over as Dumbledore, that didnt happen, this wont happen.

@dracula - I wish that had happened instead of Michael Gambon’s Dumbledore. I have great respect for the guy I just didn’t like his take. Richard Harris was hard to beat though (personal preference😊)

@ChangAlang - i really liked gambon meself.but i never read the books and apparantly richard harris did a good job with the character

@Solarkalel85 - Yeah maybe that’s why I’m bias towards Harris because of the books haha. If I only think of Gambon’s Dumbledore he did have a powerful presence in his own right. That fight scene with Voldemort at the Ministry of Magic in OotP was very well done!

I'm for it. It'll do a disservice to Leia's character for her to just disappear or die off screen between movies. I really want them to go with their plan to have her be a main player in IX and continue and finish her arc. Meryl Streep would be a fantastic choice.

@Boyle360 - It'd be a disservice to Carrie Fisher and the legacy that comes with Leia and her portayal. She IS Leia after all. It doesnt matter if its a "disservice" to the character for Leia to be dead. Carrie is dead and Leia will die with her
RocknRolla
RocknRolla - 3/30/2018, 4:56 AM
@Boyle360 - Theyll do exactly what they did with Grand Moff Tarkin in Rogue one to pick somebody with a similar body and acting skills and then superimpose her face over that body duh

@SupermansTrunks - That's like saying they shouldn't have recast Superman because Christopher Reeves WAS Superman.
GreedoSarducci
GreedoSarducci - 3/30/2018, 6:07 AM
@HannibalLecter - that's totally different. Superman existed in many different comic book forms and was portrayed by other actors prior to Christopher Reeve. Princess Leia has been portrayed by Carrie Fisher since they very first second we met the character. She IS Princess Leia.
HannibalLecter
HannibalLecter - 3/30/2018, 6:38 AM
@GreedoSarducci - For me the fictional character and the actor are two entirely different things, the character can be interpreted by many actors just like with Darth Vader or Superman in my previous example.

@RocknRolla - They can't. The estate said no. And Lucasfilm said after she died that they wouldn't push that. They didn't want to be disrespectful.

I think that IX should actually start after Leia's death. Streep is an incredible actress and she was very close to Fisher in real life, but I would prefer the character to not be recast.

Please don’t recast the role. I feel that would be more disrespectful to the actress just to pander to fans’ tantrums about wanting to see more Leia despite Carrie Fisher being dead.

Open with her funeral, have all the characters being emotional and then getting on with the mission. Don’t drag it out. To me, that’s what Leia would want the characters to do
