STAR WARS: Lucasfilm Developing OBI-WAN KENOBI Film With Stephen Daldry In Talks To Direct
Well, it appears as though we know where the Star Wars universe is heading after Han Solo as a new report has confirmed that Lucasfilm is already hard at work developing an Obi-Wan Kenobi standalone film.
It's been rumored for a while, but now, it looks like it's official as The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Lucasfilm & Disney have entered early negotiations with 3x Academy Award-nominated director Stephen Daldry (The Reader, The Hours, Billy Elliot) to helm an upcoming Star Wars spin-off movie centered on the fan-favorite Obi-Wan Kenobi.
The project remains in its infant stages, so there is no script attached just yet, but THR adds that if/when Daldry's deal closes, he would be in charge of developing and writing the script alongside Lucasfilm's team of scribes.
As for whether 2x Golden Globe-nominee Ewan McGregor (Fargo) will reprise his role as the mentor to both Anakin and Luke Skywalker, well, that's yet-to-be determined as it's uncertain where the film will take place in the Star Wars continuity.
Variety adds that the studio, at the moment, is undecided on whether this will be the standalone film to follow Star Wars: Episode IX. In addition to next year's Han Solo, there are also solo films based on Boba Fett and Yoda that are in various stages of development over at the House of Mouse and either property could also serve as the studio's 2020 Star Wars offering if Obi-Wan isn't ready to roll.
