STAR WARS & TMNT Almost Crossed Over For A Toy Line In The '90s - Check Out Some Concept Designs

As you may already be aware, Playmates came close to producing a line of Star Wars/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles action figures back in the early '90s when Kenner allowed the Star Wars toy licence to lapse.

It wasn't meant to be (more's the pity), but thanks to WB Games' Alan Johnson, we now have a first look at some unused concept designs featuring the likes of ChewMikey, Darth Shredder, Princess April and Leo Skywalker.

Inspired by these awesome designs, Geeks Antiques created some mock-ups.

These aren't official prototypes, of course, but how cool would it be if these figures were to somehow become a reality? We've seen plenty of TMNT crossover toys in the past (Ghostbusters, Classic Monsters, WWE etc), but the galaxy far, far away has always eluded the Heroes in a Half-Shell.

Maybe if these concepts get enough attention, the Hasbro (who now handles the Star Wars licence) and Playmates will strike a deal?

Can you think of any other Star Wars/TMNT character mash-ups you'd like to see?

They dodged a bullet on this one. These two franchises just shouldn’t be put together. I get the “cash grab” aspect but c’mon now.

As the french dub of the 1990 movie used to say, Shredder's design is basically "Darth Vader on steroids". lol

I think they could have pulled it off. The Turtle Trek toys were pretty cool

@Waddles - "A Very 90's Brand of Lunacy" may as well be on my gravestone.

Not a Star Wars fan by any means, but always found Darth Vader to look cool & be the only appealing thing about the franchise for me.

Digging the Darth Vader inspired Shredder (Well, the first one & not the one that got an actual figure mock up). The full on Vader Shredder in Black just doesn't look as good.

There were some crazy toy lines in the 90s as it was.

Splinter was totally a Jedi.

He talks of a "Force" that brings his ghost to the turtles in this scene...

Between these and those pictures Alex Ross made for the Justice League/Star Wars pitch, I kinda came to realize that Star Wars hasn't really done any crossovers with other franchises
