THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER Director Taika Waititi Suggests His STAR WARS Movie Hasn't Been Greenlit Yet

Filmmaker Taika Waititi has already debunked Kathleen Kennedy's claims that his Star Wars movie will be released next year, but now indicates it won't be greenlit until he's finished writing the script...

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy remains a divisive figure among Star Wars fans. While much of the hatred she receives is, sadly, due to her gender, there's no denying that the executive has made some significant missteps these past few years. Among them is making promises that don't pan out.

For example, new Star Wars trilogies from Rian Johnson and David Benioff and Dan Weiss have failed to materialise, while Patty Jenkins' Rogue Squadron has crashed and burned with no explanation.

At Star Wars Celebration, Kennedy stated that Taika Waititi's movie set in this Galaxy Far, Far Away will be released in 2023, though it's since become clear that's not going to happen. Doing the rounds to promote Thor: Love and Thunder, the filmmaker has said on numerous occasions that he's still trying to crack the story, and now casts doubt on the project actually happening.

"I’m trying to write the 'Star Wars' idea at the moment," Waititi tells The New York Post (via SFFGazette.com"I’ve got to see how that goes, because once I submit it, that might determine when it gets made or if it gets made, even."

We've seen Kennedy clash with filmmakers (see: Solo directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller), so if his vision doesn't match Lucasfilm's, there is a chance it won't become a reality. Clearly, we're going to have to wait and see for now.

As of right now, the future of Star Wars on the big screen remains as uncertain as ever. For whatever reason, Lucasfilm seems to be struggling with how to tell stories in theaters, which is somewhat surprising when Disney+ has delivered hits like The Mandalorian and Obi-Wan Kenobi

While it's definitely a shame that we're not enjoying this franchise on the biggest screens possible, there's a lot to look forward to on streaming as Andor, The Mandalorian season 3, Ahsoka, The Acolyte, and Skeleton Crew are all on the way.

Keep checking SFFGazette.com for updates on the Star Wars franchise's future!

@hummingbird68 - Wow. I personally think they should go with an unknown. I think Taron would be a great Scott/Cyclops though.

I think Wolverine is too important and so particular that it would be dumb of them not to cast massively wide net. But maybe they did and he was great in the auditions, idk.

Remember when he lied about those Thor L&T costumes and didn't claim them??? I wouldn't trust him on anything until it's out.

It hasn’t been greenlit yet because Disney wants to see how bad Thor Love and Thunder is going to be. If not successful and well received then they won’t want his goofy style to be applied to Star Wars.

@TyrantBossMedia - Just as long as they don't try to correct course midway through production like Solo. I'm pretty certain Millar and Lord were just as whacky as Waititi, if not more..

@UnderBelly - If so, then thank god that they got fired and Ron Howard took over.

He probably pitched his idea and Kathleen told him it's too good and he has to find a way to tone it down, make it average and mild as plain toast as to not make the other Star Wars products look bad by comparison.

Star Wars is bland now.

Guess all he told Lucasfilm was that he wanted to make a Star Wars movie.

Anyway, I wonder if he can crack the code and actually get's to make. After Solo, Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Rogue Squadron, I have my doubts Lucasfilm can let movies just be the movies the directors/writers wanted it to be.

@bkmeijer1 - Which is odd, because the last time they let someone do that, it resulted in the highest grossing film of 2017, and with critical acclaim to boot.

That was Rian Johnson and The Last Jedi, BTW.

@asherman93 - it's weird that they let someone go wild with a main saga movie, but there are creative differences over spin-offs and such. Would expect those give directors and writers a lot more room to play around in

Hope this comes true. Taika is one of the few creators I wouldn’t trust to handle Star Wars, given he dropped the ball with Ragnarok as badly as some fans THINK Rian did with TLJ.

@asherman93 - lol. Johnson absolutely dropped the ball with TLJ. That movie is an abomination in every conceivable way

@Toblakai - Acting’s solid, effects are solid, music is good, and themes are on point. At worst, TLJ is a 7/10.
Ragnarok at worst makes BvS look good.

@asherman93 - 7/10?

Have you sent your resume to Disney? They would love to employ a dupe like you

This will get made and it will be a dumpster fire. Can't wait!!
