An Extended Edition Of THE MARTIAN Is In The Works And May Be Arriving Sooner Than You'd Think

It sounds like that long-rumored extended cut of Ridley Scott's The Martian might finally be on the way, and it could be arriving a lot earlier than you would've expected. More details past the jump...

20th Century Fox's The Martian was easily one of the best and most successful films of 2015, garnering seven Academy Award nominations, including nominations for Best Picture & Best Actor, three Golden Globe nominations, which resulted in two wins, and acclaim from both fans and critics alike. It was also no slouch at the box office as by the end of its run, it had collected an impressive $629.3 million ($228.4m domestic, $400m foreign).

A few months ago, it was widely rumored that the critically acclaimed Ridley Scott-directed film would be receiving an Extended Director's Cut on Blu-ray, a practice that is fairly commonplace amongst Scott's films, however, when the film arrived on home video in early January, there was no additional cut included and there was no futher mention of the cut anywhere remotely official... well until now that is.

The folks over at The Digital Bits have learned directly from representatives of 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment that a Director's Cut of The Martian, tentatively titled The Martian: Special Edition, is very much in the works and will be arriving in stores much sooner than later and definitely before year's end. How soon exactly? Well, just last week, the Australian retailer EzyDVD had listed The Martian: Extended Cut on their website with a June 8 release date before promptly removing it, so read into that what you will. It's probably best to take this news with a small grain of salt until something official is announced, but things are certainly looking good for fans that want to see more of Matt Damon (Jason Bourne) sciencing the s**t out of Mars.

So, what do you guys think? If this report is true, will you be picking up the extended special edition? Sound off with your thoughts below!

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return. Based on a best-selling novel, and helmed by master director Ridley Scott, THE MARTIAN features a star studded cast that includes Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Pena, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Donald Glover.

The Martian features:
Director: Ridley Scott
Matt Damon as Astronaut Mark Watney
Jessica Chastain as Commander Melissa Lewis
Kristen Wiig as Annie Montrose
Jeff Daniels as Teddy Sanders
Michael Peña as Major Rick Martinez
Kate Mara as Beth Johanssen
Sean Bean as Mitch Henderson
Sebastian Stan as Dr. Chris Beck
Donald Glover as Rich Purnell
Chiwetel Ejiofor as Venkat Kapoor
Jonathan Aris as Hatch
Naomi Scott as Ryoko
Aksel Hennie as Alex Vogel
Mackenzie Davis as Mindy Park
Lili Bordán as Blair
Nick Mohammed as Tim Grimes

The Martian is out sciencing the sh*t out of Blu-ray/DVD NOW!

I read the book before i watched the movie, and i liked the movie better precisely because it actually leaves out a lot of the fluff from the book.

Thing is, Watney is an unlikable douche in the book. He speaks like one those basement trolls on reddit! His first response when he makes contact from Nasa is literally a boob emoticon. So yeah, i'm afraid the extended cut will bring that out from his character.

@GetsugaTensho22 - agreed! The book turned me off so much I didn't even watch the movie --- who would want that guy back? The better plot would be they left him on purpose because he's such a jerk.

I love the movie so I'll definitely pick this copy

Also I finally finished daredevil and al I can say is that it might be the best superhero TV show ever made (and that's coming from a guy who has been obsessed with the flash since he was 4 years old)

I think my favorite Easter egg of the season was when Fisk was eating dinner in jail and listening to music, it was the same song that was playing when loki interrupted the ball in Germany during avengers 1. That much attention to detail is just rediculously amazing

Matt Damon should tell his buddy Ben Affleck he's weak and losing big. Embarrassing that he let DC fall down this path. Embarassing.
