According to ERC Box Office, Avatar has earned an estimated $27 million on its opening day in various formats including 3D IMAX. At this rate, the film is poised to become the third highest grossing film in history for the month of December.

Avatar is estimated to take in $74 million over the course of its first three days in release. That wouldn't quite have it breaking the best December opening weekend, which is currently held by I Am Legend. Will Smith's film debuted with $77 million on its opening weekend this same time two years ago.

Analysts are blaming snow on the East Coast for such low numbers. While others believe that it is a word of mouth movie that will grow with each coming day. Avatar is directed by James Cameron and stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez, Giovanni Ribisi, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Peter Mensah, Laz Alonso, Wes Studi, Stephen Lang, and Matt Gerald.

Looks like not evan James Cameron can beat The Dark Knight... or evan worse New Moon!!!

I agree with Dogs. It won't have TDK numbers, or something huge, but it will do fairly well.

Avatar news should be dead now.. The movie is out, and it's time to stop with rehashing Avatar news. Lets start with a lot of Ironman 2, Clash of the Titans, Johah, and Kick Ass to start the next year off right.. Anybody disagree?

When avatar is out on DVD then it's time to pick back up on it.. :P

@betty I think the only reason I Am Legend lasted that much was because of the first 6 mins of TDK being at the start of I Am Legend. That is honestly the only reason why I went for the first 6 min of TDK :] will smith is great but ya know its Batman

wow, am I the only person who thinks that the movie didnt look great? The CGI next to the real life stuff just looks horrible to me. Very unrealistic and unbelievable, it feels very detached.
