BARBARELLA Remake Moving Forward With MADAME WEB & EUPHORIA Star Sydney Sweeney Attached

While a new film has been rumored for quite a while, it looks like Barbarella is officially happening as Euphoria breakout Sydney Sweeney has signed on to star and executive produce a reboot!

Deadline is reporting that Sony Pictures has enlisted 2x Primetime Emmy-nominee Sydney Sweeney (Madame WebEuphoria) to star and executive produce a new Barbarella movie. The film will be based on Jean Claude Forest's French comic book series of the same name, which was previously turned into a movie in 1968 starring Jane Fonda.

No writer or director is currently attached to the project, but with Sweeney signing on, expect her to be heavily involved in the search for both.

The in-demand actress has become a Sony favorite, and is currently filming their Spider-Man adjacent Marvel adventure Madame Web, where she'll star opposite Dakota Johnson and a talented ensemble cast. The studio also recently acquired The Registration, another project set to star Sweeney.

Sweeney is best known for her role as Cassie Howard on the HBO drama Euphoria and for playing Olivia Mossbacher in HBO's The White Lotus. She earned Primetime Emmy nominations for both parts. Her most recent releases include Prime Video's The Voyeurs and Netflix's Night Teeth

Roger Vadim's original Barbarella movie was no box office success, but has earned cult classic status in the decades since. Its synopsis reads, "Barbarella, an astronaut from the 41st century, sets out to find and stop the evil scientist Durand Durand, whose Positronic Ray threatens to bring evil back into the galaxy."

No idea which direction the new film will take, but it's likely to receive a modern spin, and with Sweeney attached, draw quite a bit of attention whenever it makes its way to theaters or streaming.

It is sour. That movie is a nice time capsule but the story? Not so much.

...did you guys see the original? Considering modern politics, it seems weird they're adapting this.

Could this mark the end of woke politics infecting the movie industry?

@AmazingFILMporg - sarcasm aside, it's very much an infection ruining so many movies in Hollywood. And anytime the fans point out they don't like these politics thrown in, the studios then start calling the fans toxic.

It really doesn't. It's a product of it's time and when you strip away all the fluff and window dressing there is not much of a story and the characters are kind of meh.

@TheSuperMex -

It's in that same ballpark. Comics and Sci-Fi were considered trashy at the time and it was a play on those tropes. It's based on a french comic book.

Yike.

That's twice in as many days I've grieved for an unproduced Robert Rodriguez/Rose McGowan project.

@TheVandalore - I dunno. I saw everybody going nuts over her here and so I googled her. Naked pictures and all.
She seems like the type who shows as much of her boobs as she can to distract from her face.

Still, with fame comes a whole team of people working all kinds of magicks. There are many sex symbols, both male and female, who would've been considered classically ugly if not for these glamors being bestowed on them. So I don't see why it wouldn't work on her.

I've already seen some of her catalogue work and she looks halfway-decent in those.

We buy what we are sold I guess.

And... boobs.
