BARBARELLA Star Sydney Sweeney Shares Her Hopes For Sony's Upcoming Reboot Of Sci-Fi Cult Classic

Madame Web star Sydney Sweeney has revealed her hopes for the upcoming Barbarella reboot she will star in and produce, suggesting she's looking to don those outfits made iconic by Jane Fonda in the 1960s.

It was recently revealed that Madame Web star Sydney Sweeney is set to take on the lead role in Sony Pictures' upcoming Barbarella reboot. The Euphoria actress will also executive produce the movie, and all signs point to this being a passion project for her.

Sweeney all but confirmed as much during a recent interview in which she shared her hopes for the movie, admitting she has a lot to live up to given what her predecessor did with the role.

"Jane Fonda...she created such an incredible, iconic character," the actress says (via SFFGazette.com). "And I want to, hopefully, just fill those shoes and give more to a whole new generation - her outfits, sci-fi, the fun of the story. So, I'm looking forward to it."

Her outfits? Sweeney, widely considered one of the most beautiful stars working in Hollywood today, is a powerhouse talent. However, from the moment she was cast, many Barbarella fans wondered if she might don those iconic, risqué outfits and, as of now, it's looking like that will indeed be the case.

The original Barbarella movie was released way back in 1968 and has become a cult classic in the years since. We obviously don't expect this to be an "erotic" sci-fi movie, though we're guessing it will be similarly raunchy and tongue-in-cheek. However, with Sweeney also producing, we're mostly hoping it will also be an empowering adventure for the heroine.

This reboot is still in the very early stages of development, as no writer or director have been revealed by the studio (there's also no news on a release date). Sony is clearly high on Sweeney, though, as this news came shortly after she landed a lead role in February 2024's Madame Web.

Why would that be the case? Hollywood knows its not be erotic or sexy...bet there will never be an Emmanuelle remake. I miss sexism and mysogyny. Society is getting really sensitive and its not gonna end well for anyone....not everyone in the world is supposed to be have their way.

“Sweeney, widely considered one of the most beautiful stars working in Hollywood today…”

….from the neck down, absolutely.

Don’t get me wrong, she has a VERY attractive face, but I wouldn’t place her that high up.
