The Hollywood Reporter (via SFFGazette.com) reveals that Prime Video has given the green light to Blade Runner 2099, a limited series sequel to Sir Ridley Scott's iconic sci-fi franchise.

Amazon Studios and franchise owners Alcon Entertainment are developing the project, while Scott will serve as an executive producer. Silka Luisa (Shining Girls), meanwhile, has been tapped as showrunner. We first heard about plans for the show in February, and while plot details are scarce, common sense says the story will be set 50 years after 2017's Blade Runner 2049

2099 will be a familiar year to many of you, as it's the year Marvel Comics' future stories take place (hence, Spider-Man 2099). Alas, those characters obviously won't be appearing here!

"The original Blade Runner, directed by Ridley Scott, is considered one of the greatest and most influential science-fiction movies of all time, and we’re excited to introduce Blade Runner 2099 to our global Prime Video customers," Amazon Studios Head of Global Television Vernon Sanders said in a statement earlier today.

"We are honored to be able to present this continuation of the Blade Runner franchise, and are confident that by teaming up with Ridley, Alcon Entertainment, Scott Free Productions, and the remarkably talented Silka Luisa," he continues, "Blade Runner 2099 will uphold the intellect, themes, and spirit of its film predecessors."

Alcon co-CEOs and co-founders Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson add, "Audiences first discovered Ridley Scott’s brilliant vision for Blade Runner 40 years ago, and since then, it has become one of the most influential science-fiction films of all time. Denis Villeneuve’s follow-up sequel, Blade Runner 2049, then became one of the best reviewed sequels of all time."

"So, we recognize that we have a very high bar to meet with this next installment. Together with Silka and our partners at Amazon, and Scott Free Productions, we hope that we can live up to that standard and delight audiences with the next generation of Blade Runner."

We're in equal parts excited and intrigued to see how this one comes together...and whether Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling appear. Given the setting, we won't get our hopes up, and wouldn't be surprised if the time jump is a deliberate way to move this franchise forward with new leads.

The mention of this being a limited series confirms it will be a one-off too, so it's very intriguing to think about how this could potentially conclude the story Scott started telling back in 1982.

@ShimmyShimmyYA - PapaSpank54 is correct. There are also a few shorts that take place between the two movies that help flesh our the storyline and show what happens between the two movies

This news pleases me. Blade Runner 2049 is one of the better sci fi movies in recent years.

@mountainman - Ridley Scott is cool and all, but bring in Denis Villeneuve if they want the show to be any good

@UncleHarm1 - I’m pretty sure he will be busy enough with the Dune series for a while if that continues past part 2.

@GhostDog - visually and directorially, yes. The script was lacking compared to the first.

This is GREAT news. Hopefully the script won't be hijacked.

@GeneralZod - hijacked by who? The replicants? Or maybe an AI, now that would be an interesting script
GeneralZod

@bkmeijer1 - Hijacked by the content control committee over at Disney.

@GeneralZod - ah gotcha. Didn't think about Disney at all. Kinda forgot they got Blade Runner too with that Fox deal right?

@GeneralZod - I thought Blade Runner was a Warner Bros movie.

@marvel72 - You're right. Blade Runner is a WB property. As such, there is hope that the 2099 script won't be hijacked the way Disney's content committee has destroyed so many Marvel scripts these past 12 months.

@GeneralZod - huh, I really thought it was part of Fox.

I guess it also explains why Black Lotus was co-made by Adult Swim if Blade Runner is owned by WB. Still gotta watch that.

Cool

Will watch when it comes out

Got to wonder how this series keeps going

First movie bombed
Second movie bombed

Great movies but how does a series of bombs get an anime series and a live action series

LMFAO the throw away lines about totally unrelated Marvel shites are typical for this “journalist” 🙄🤦🏼‍♂️.

As for this franchise - highly entertaining, though each installment could be considered cult-classic-esque in that they really bombed at the box office. Never watched the anime shows, but this one sounds interesting.

Also how does everyone forget that the Kurt Russell movie titled Soldier is also a part of the Blade Runner franchise? Definitely decent movie…more of a cult following sci-fi movie as it got horrible reviews.

Blade Runner 2049 was objectively better than the original in every possible way, and that was mainly due to Denis Villenueve. I’m worried this series will just end up being another generic Cyberpunk series on a TV budget

I could imagine Jessica Henwick going through the artificial entrails of replicants with a Katana.

I think the world of Blade Runner is a place for Bushido and a devoted huntress of the warrior's way would be great.
