According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gravity managed to cross the $500 million mark at the worldwide box office this weekend. The 3D movie - which stars only Sandra Bullock and George Clooney - has now grossed $240.6 million in North America and $274.3 million internationally. That gives it a global cume of over $515 million, and with an opening in China still to come, many expect to see it reach upwards of $600 million by the end of its run. Even with competition like Thor: The Dark World, Gravity still managed to take $18.5 million this weekend and even finished at #6 domestically with $6.3 million. Overseas, France leads with $37.5 million, followed by Korea ($26.5 million), the UK ($23.2 million), Russia ($20.9 million) and Australia ($18.1 million). The movie has only been playing in the UK for two weeks and it is now the seventh biggest movie of 2013.
[Sandra] Bullock plays Dr. Ryan Stone, a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky [George Clooney] in command of his last flight before retiring. But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalsky completely alone–tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness. The deafening silence tells them they have lost any link to Earth…and any chance for rescue. As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left. But the only way home may be to go further out into the terrifying expanse of space.
