BOX OFFICE: Raise The Serkis Tents! $70M+ For DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES!

These box office results are bananas, B-A-N-A-N-A-S! Saturday, larger crowds than expected came out to see 20th Century Fox's Dawn of the Planet of the Apes engage in gorilla warfare.

As compared to last year, box office ticket sales are down a whopping 20%. But, it's not all bad. 20th Century Fox has reason to cheer. Their new film, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, is having a larger-than-expected opening weekend. Weeks before it opened analysts expected it to open around $68M, and based on Friday's number that seemed to be accurate, but Saturday results were only down 9%. That means Matt Reeves' film is now on pace for $72M to $74M. It also means it will outperform 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes opening weekend numbers by around $20M ($54.8M).
"Meanwhile, the Michael Bay franchise Transformers: Age of Extinction reached the $200M threshold today for Paramount Pictures after its third week in release. It rode through the July 4th holiday well and obviously lost a lot of ground this weekend to Apes. It was down about 53% from last Friday which was the Fourth of July and is likely to drop about 55% from last weekend. So $6.7M today and $16.7M for the three day to raise its cume to $209.2M." - Deadline

A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is being directed by Matt Reeves (Cloverfield, Let Me In), from a screenplay written by Mark Bomback, Scott Z. Burns, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver. The cast includes: Andy Serkis (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey), Jason Clarke (Zero Dark Thirty, Public Enemies, The Great Gatsby), Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight Rises, The Harry Potter film series), Keri Russell (The Americans, Mission Impossible III), Toby Kebbell (The Prince of Persia, Wrath of the Titans, Rock N Rolla), Kodi Smit-McPhee (Let Me In, ParaNorman), Enrique Murciano (Traffic, Black Hawk Down), Kirk Acevedo (The Thin Red Line) and Judy Greer (The Descendants, Three Kings, 13 Going on 30). The film climbs into theaters July 11, 2014

Awesome movie. It's always great to a sequel that's equal to or better than the first film.

Saw it last night in 3D with my pops (even though the 3D wasn't insanely worth it I'll give them the extra cash for the good job they did) I favor the first one more in some ways but this one most certainly elevates the cultural dynamic and customs of the Apes. Because there was a different director involved this time around I didn't force myself to see all things out of disarray. I'll give it an 8.4/10 I think the last one will most certainly be the icing in the cake the "Wrath of the Planet of the Apes" is coming.

Oh yeah, forget "Hail Hydra"...

-HAIL KOBA!!! jk HAIL CAESAR

It was pretty good. Saw it in 3D last night.

I might be just a slight teensy weensy bit overhyped, but it was fairly incredible. Had me on the edge of my seat almost the whole movie

This movie is The Empire Strikes Back of our time.

It is truly that remarkable. I give it a 10/10. It is seriously the best movie I've seen in years and perfect in just about every way. What an experience.
