The original The Day of the Triffids is a post-apocalyptic novel written in 1951 by the English science fiction author John Wyndham. Although Wyndham had already published other novels, this was the first published under the John Wyndham pen-name. It established him as an important writer, and remains his best known novel.

CHARACTER PROFILE: DR BILL MASEN (DOUGRAY SCOTT)

An introspective scientist, Bill is a thoughtful Triffid expert who is more at home with his Triffid research than social interaction. Bill grew up with the plants that are now roaming the country, and it was his parents made the incredible discovery that they could provide oil. But their pioneering work came at a cost: his mother was killed by a Triffid, leaving Bill all too aware how dangerous the plants really are.

CHARACTER PROFILE: JO PLAYTON (JOELY RICHARDSON)

A radio journalist, Jo is a bright, sociable and irreverent woman who escapes the mass blinding because she is reporting on the event from the London Underground. Terrified by the chaos, Jo clings to Bill after their chance meeting and becomes embroiled in his desperate fight to prevent the plants reproducing, falling in love with him in the process.

CHARACTER PROFILE: TORRENCE (EDDIE IZZARD)

Torrence is a sinister and obsessive man who retains his sight after the solar flare, and sees this as an opportunity to step into the power vacuum that has resulted in Downing Street. A stickler for rules and authority, when Bill and Jo are held captive by his new 'army', Torrence becomes obsessed with Jo and plans to use her celebrity to draw more people to the cities, who can then fight for his cause. Determined to rule over the remaining sighted population, and keep the blind away from the centre of London, Torrence cannot foresee the approach of the Triffids towards the capital and soon comes to realise that he will need Bill's help to fight them off once and for all.

CHARACTER PROFILE: COKER (JASON PRIESTLEY)

A former military man with liberal principles, Coker strongly believes that the remaining sighted in the UK have a duty to support and care for those who have been blinded.

CHARACTER PROFILE: DENNIS MASEN (BRIAN COX)

The estranged father of Bill, Dennis is the scientist who discovered the Triffids in Africa and exploited their commercial use. Bill seeks Dennis's help in stopping the plants from overrunning the country.

Thanks to the BBC for the information.

Yeah,it was pretty good. The tension builds pretty well and the scenes of London in ruins are pretty convincing.Though it's hard to surpress a smile at the triffids strolling down the streets !

So far it's not bad, but all those "useless" blind people (not very pc that is it!) is very comical as they wander around bumping into stuff.

And the surviving defence unit seem happy to just "get by" and don't see those plants as a risk, why not go in with flame throwers and torch all them pesky triffids before the very predictable onslaught on their base!?

I absolutely adore the book and could read it over and over. Last nights offering? Well, if it ain't broke don't fix it! And, as for Dougray Scott??! Pah! What an embarrassment! Omggggg, it was awful!

I know that it was based on the book but it would have been fab if they hired a leading actor who could act and, maybe, was familiar with the character and story.

**steps off soap box**

I remember watching the original black & white movie and also the 80's BBC tv series and both were great for there time. I cant wait to watch this one, and hope it keeps up the standard, and Eddie Izzard is a good choice for this. And the CGI for the plane look ok also.

GUYS @ Well i for one think it was done really well, especially for TV!!!

Only just managed to see the first half about half an hour ago though, but the TRIFFIDS look cool an so do all the other effects, the story is pretty dark, which is a bonus an the actings top-notch!

Can't wait for the second part! An that goes for DR WHO too (BBC also).

As a kid I was a big fan of the original movie from 1960's. This looks really cool. I've always wanted to check out the 1980's series from Britain as well.

Watched this over the last two nights and it was a fantastic piece of television.

And having met Dougray Scott on the set of To Kill A King, I can tell you that compared to Jackman, he's tiny.

Jackmnan's about 6'4" while Scott's around 5'11". Still 6" too tall for the comics Wolvie, but he looks a helluva lot meaner and nastier than smiley-faced Jackman.

Got a chance to watch and as a fan of the original movie and the 80's series i have to say "FANTASTIC" one of the best updates i have seen in a long time. Gerat CG for the triffids no over the top stuff, and good twist on the old one with triffids use to help combat global warming just to rub in the latest global problems
