District 9 Prepping for Sequel/Prequel

Love it or hate it, Neil Blomkamp, the director of District 9, has confirmed that a sequel or perhaps a prequel is in the works.

Could District 9's Wikus Van der Merwe join the Sci-Fi icon franchise ranks of Ellen Ripley (Alien/Aliens) and John Connor (Terminator)? Already Neil Blomkamp's tale of an alternative timeline in which grub-like bipedal aliens arrived in South Africa in the early 80s looks set for a sequel.

District 9 has so far taken $89m at the global box office on a budget of $30m, with most of the world yet to see it. District 9 will be released in the UK on September 4th. Blomkamp, a native of South Africa who shot the film under the watchful eye of producer Peter Jackson, left the ending open for a second film.

"I would totally make a sequel," he told scifimoviepage.com. "I've got an inclination but it's not really fleshed out yet. Now that it's done well, I think it would be cool. The studio have definitely said they want one, it's just a question of what the hell it is."

However Blomkamp said he first wanted to shoot another science fiction film - this one set on another planet. District 9, which takes place in a Soweto style area where the extra terrestrials have been separated from humanity.

I would definitely see a sequel/prequel because the movie was great. Very unique and the most realistic and creative alien movie EVER.

"District 9, which takes place in a Soweto style area where the extra terrestrials have been separated from humanity..." LOL. Just thought I'd point this out. What were you going to talk about here?

Anyway, I'm the one guy who wasn't a big fan of District 9. A lot of plot holes and unexplained things. Plus, the third act really dragged on a bit.
