GHOSTBUSTERS 3: Dan Aykroyd Hints Bill Murray Could Be Replaced

Dan Aykroyd today had an interview with Empire Magazine, and he addressed Ghostbusters 3 rumors, and surprisingly hinted that they didn't need Murray to have Peter Venkman return.

Even more intriguingly, Aykroyd hinted that Bill Murray may not return as Peter Venkman, and that the character could be played by a different actor, a la Jack Ryan. - Empire

Dan Aykroyd participated in a webcast today with Empire Magazine. The comedian was of course asked about the often-rumored Ghostbusters 3.

Dan was asked about the National Enquirer story, in which they published a entertaining tale of Bill Murray shredding the script for the third film out of disgust. A tale that their unnamed source says got back to Aykroyd and he was so furious that he would make the third one even without Bill.

"Bill Murray is not capable of such behaviour. This is simply something that would not be in his nature. We have a deep, private personal relationship that transcends business. We communicate frequently and his position on the involvement in Ghostbusters 3 has been made clear and I respect that. But Bill has too much positive estimation of my writing skills to shred the work."

Besides addressing Murray, Aykroyd was asked about the reclusive Rick Moranis, who had a major part in the original, but was left to babysitting duties in the second.

"If we can get the script to Ghostbusters 3 right, then it would definitely have Moranis as a major component. None of us would want to do the movie without having him as a participant."

If Bill Murray is replaced by another actor for Peter Venkman, who would you like to see take on the role?

I say Reboot this whole thing, I'm a big ghostbusters fan - but im with Bill on this, they're too old now. If they are going to replace Murray there is only one man who can do the job.... Bruce Campbell!!!

I don't think they should bother with another film. Unless it's a spin-off with a New Generation of Ghostbusters.

I wish murray would sign on to this, its basically just going to be them passing the torch to a younger group of ghostbusters and them being like management, think of bruce wayne in batman beyond, atleast that would make the most sense.

Like i said, I really wish murray would sign on, but even if he doesn't, i would still rather have a sequal over nothing at all. Everyone is mad saying that they are dumb for not having murray but its not akroyd and ramos's fault, its Murray who wont go through with it and the longer he waits the more annoying it is.

Well, beyond the obvious choices (Bradley Cooper, Gary Oldman, Ted Danson), I think Venkman could be handily performed by Danny Glover, Edward James Olmos, Ken Watanabe, Liam Neeson, Adrian Brody, or perhaps Al Pacino.

The reason Bill Murray doesn't want to make this movie is because he's smart and has moved on. Here's an idea...let's do a MORK and MINDY movie and see if Robin Williams wants in!!

Just use stock footage of Bill Murray, just like JFK in Forrest Gump. Or CGI him, could'nt be any worse than Jar-Jar.

Hmm, I don't think it makes any sense to have someone else play Venkman. They could attempt to create a new character to "replace" him on the team but Murray is Venkman.

Murray is an ass because he refuses to work on a sequel to classics that has a shitty script? Sure, that makes sense...

I get it. Venkman dies and posesses another's body. Put him in a woman or a chubby comic relief and things could get funny. You could even have him go from host to host.

Bill Murray will voice Garfield in a Tale of Two Kitties but he won't make a Ghostbusters 3? Your credi-BILL-ity is dropping.

they should make it a running gag that they can't get ahold of Venkman. he's not returning calls or he says he's too busy or doesn't want to rejoin the team (basically his same reasons for not doing the movie).

Murray is not an ass for that reason, but i have heard that Murray is indeed an ass. It has been said that he is really nice to people he doesn't know but treats his friends like crap. Also that he can be really cool on set one day and be a total dick another.

[frick] that, whats the point of doing it without Murray if your going to have Venkman in it.

Akroyds got a vodka out, it comes in a skull, it's kinda cool and tastes like vodka ha, I wish he could do a sequel to the great outdoors, that was a great movie! Leave ghostbusters alone, or reboot with a new cast and throw in a cameo or four

If Bill Murray's not in it, I don't want to see it.

And he's not being an ass. He's just not interested in doing another Ghostbusters movie. Been there, done that -- twice.

Not every actor in Hollywood is in it for the paycheck. ;)

You don't replace Bill Murray. Thats completely ridiculous. Just don't make the damn movie. Its been too long anyway.

On the other hand, they could reboot it. I would watch a reboot. They could even just make new characters. Like Akroyd could be there as the owner of the company type thing. The brains of the operation. But then have new recruits. I don't know if i really want to see these old farts running around with 100 lbs proton packs bitching about how they are getting too old for this, their back hurts, their EBS is acting up, they forgot their mylanta, or they need to get to the pharmacy and restock on Viagra. I can do without a senior home version, thanks.

A good reason he probably came back to do Garfield 2 is he may have been contractual obligated to be in it. I don't think any of them WANTED to come back, they just all acted like they didn't have a choice but to be there.

But we all might as well face reality. Eventually Venkman will be someone other than Murray. Hollywood is not going to avoid remaking this series.

If they replace bill i'll still see it.
i want this movie so bad. Old ghosbusters... am i the only one who loves that concept.

they got fat and old and may not be as culturally signifigant as they once were. um, THAT SHOULD BE THE WHOLE POINT OF THE MOVIE!!!! who cares about the passing along the torch idea. ghostbusters having to go one one last mission together, possibly never to come back...

make it happen dan! come onto this site, read my post and make that movie!!!

thruth is my ass is a seat opening night no matter what shape or form a ghostbusters movie comes in.

bill did the video-game. he being wishy washy on another gb movie, but not the actual franchise. if he is in it great. if not, i'd hardly call that a deal breaker. if moranis is out, again i'll be sad, but not a deal breaker.

if its just ackroyd running around by himself with a proton pack, i'd be just fine lol

I knew that whole story with Bill Murray shredding the script was BS.

I think they should say Venkman has taken time off from Ghostbusters to try to work things out with Dana. Unless, they bring Siguorney Weaver back then that excuse wouldn't work.

Besides, there's only one Peter Venkman.

@ncreb Good idea, man. I could see him fitting in well with the cast.

@axelbratoski I agree and nice avatar. "Hey, you guys ready to let the dogs out?" Lol

I dont want a reboot, i would prefer something like this ... Jay Baruchel as Egon's son is ona trip abroad with his father visiting different spiritual sites and such, Jay B's character would of course be alot like his Father Egon, fully believing in the spiritual relm.

Zoe Deschanel as Ray Stantz Daughter, she is helping her dad run Ray's Accult Books, at 1st she isn't very interested in the spiritual world seeing as her dad is sooo enthusiastic about it all the time. She grew up with it around her so much that she just isn't that interested in it. Later in the film when she is busting the ghosts she will be determined to show that she can be just as good as any of the guys, if not better. I really like Zoe D for the role because she can just be so odd and corky, i think having ray for a father would make you like that. It would also be good for her to show she can act tough and not just be the odd ball attractive girl.

Sean William Scott ( not really sold on, this was just the person that came to me off the top of my head ) as Venkman's son with Dana. He is a loser at the beginning. Peter disappeared a long time ago, Sean's character will own a pest control company called bug busters, he will have a flight suit, a fake proton pack that shoots insecticide. He will own the Ecto 1, he will have taken bad bad care of it, his Bug Buster logo on his suit and ecto one will look just like the ghost buster logo except with a bug instead of a ghost.

Sean's character wont believe at all about ghosts or the spiritual world, thinking that his dad was a shame and a scam artist. He will of course be the major comic relief, always flirting with the ladies and somewhat similiar to Bill's original character.

If Murray signed on for the movie he would have only disappeared recently in the movie time line, and that could be the start of the film and part of the story, Sean's character just wouldn't have any ties with Peter V. because he can't stand him for breaking his moms heart and like i said, thinks he is a shame. if he didn't sign on, then that would just be his death basically.

I would think it would be funny to the opening scene with a woman calling for help because "they" are everywhere, the ecto 1 flying to the scene, Sean gettin ready, getting the proton pack ready, running in like the hero, then the viewer finds out he is just a lame exterminator.

well i guess that is just how i would like it to be, I dont really have a villain mapped out or anything, but i would want it to be a new threat, not a rehash of the old ones.
