Still don't get why Will Smith would do so many bad movies while passing this one up.

@Mercwitham0uth

Nothing wrong with Jaden Smith. He couldve been out there doing actual bad things like murder and stealing. Jaden Smith is a good kid and just trolls people. And you fell for his trap. Lossen up a bit

Jaiden is trying so hard to live outside his dad's shadow that its laughable. Where the Fresh Prince came off as a natural Jaiden's just a try hard.

@Mercwitham0uth He lets his kids do what they want to do without judgement. Some might say that is the best of parents.

@ManCalledSting It has to be the thing I find most annoying around here. Every movie is either an awful terrible embarrassment to the art of film or the greatest movie of all time. Somewhere people lost the ability to say a movie was fine or okay or good not great. Apparently every movie has to revolutionize the art of filmmaking or it lacks all ability to be entertaining. Which is always odd to me since very very few films since the 40's have made any real advancements in storytelling.

ManCalledSting, I cover the news whether I like it or not... kind of obvious, no?

And Independence Day is a schmaltzy, cheesy, cringey, gun-ho, jingoistic, badly written, acted and directed pile of garbage made specifically for people who relish the opportunity to "switch their brains off" when visiting the theater.

Sorry... in my opinion. How's that?

I really enjoyed "Independence Day". It was a real big deal in theaters. In Houston, where I was living at the time it came out, they actually had twenty-four hour showings for weeks.

And @ManCalledSting, Ror is pretty much a level headed dude who does a good job. If he only covered stuff he liked, people would be on his sodding wick, like they are all over @Josh Wilding, calling him a cheerleader.

These guys simply cannot win with this crowd.

Good article.

And if you folks don't like strong opinions, I am sure the Hello Kitty blog is ready and willing to welcome you with pink, warm and fuzzy arms.

Ror is right; the first movie was shit and this likely will be too.

IMO, the only 1/2 decent movie that Roland Emmerich has ever been involved with is Stargate. Everything else has unequivocally sucked.

Important thing is he didn't state any opinion in the article itself, then in the comments, he can say whatever he wants

I worked at a movie theater the summer this opened. The marketing build up to its release is one of my favorite memories of high school. Until then, I hadn't seen anything like that hype for a movie that was not directed by Spielberg or that didnt have STAR WARS in the title.

Sure, the movie felt dated and cheesy just a few years after its release, but it was an event for its time.

GTFO! I think that could have been enjoyable on a so-bad-it's-good level.

@Caleb902 some say that isn't parenting at all. A parent is supposed to be a guiding figure in a young person's life. Not to just let the kid do whatever they want.

There are so many other, supremely better alien invasion movies out there:

The Arrival is one of my personal faves, starring Charlie "[frick]ing Tiger Blood" Sheen no less.

John Carpenter's The Thing, of course.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) is creepy as [frick].

Slither, for the gross-out fun factor.

And Dark City, though not really an invasion movie in the usual sense, is sublime.
