Comingsoon.net has an exclusive interview - with the king of the Blockbuster World -James Cameron.

Asked when writing the script for Avatar 15 years ago did he have a vision what the sequels would be.

No, but a lot of ideas for the sequels kind of evolved out of writing the story for "Avatar." Anything that we designed, ideas that we had, if we couldn't figure out how to put them in the movie we said "We'll stick it in the sequel," so we have a big backlog of ideas.

Asked about how many sequels there will be, his reply was that he doesn't know. But he said that he has a story arc in mind already for the 2nd installment and very vage base for the third. Then proceeded that that does not mean that there'll be a third or they will stop with a third movie.

When asked if the Avatar sequel is his next movie. He said that hasn't been decided yet.

I think a sequel would be good. Just imagine where they can go next. I for one is eager to revisit Pandora.

If there was a sequel involving humans again, it would probably have to take place 12 years after the events of the 1st movie because it takes 6 years to fly to Pandora so it would probably take 6 years to fly back. Maybe there might be a 12 year old child to the main characters.

@JJ

I've been searching for the answer for as long as I've seen it here, so far there have only been weak connections thus far.

also, there's no need for a sequel, the first one was tiresome enough

Hope the cast were smart and made deals to get paid off the back end of the film.

Knocked out of first place by a chick flick. Who knew

But like I've been saying if they do a sequel; go all Empire Strikes Back on it.

phenomenon- its good and i also saw it on 3d i was surprise but i just dont think they need a sequel they already explore the world in the first movie and they also killed the main villain to. unless james finds out to make a great second villain since the story is no problem for him.
