John Hughes' WEIRD SCIENCE Is Coming To 4K UHD Blu-Ray For The First Time

John Hughes' '80s sci-fi comedy, Weird Science, has been unavailable on home release for many years, but the movie is now set to arrive on 4K UHD Blu-ray for the very first time...

If you're of a certain age, you're sure to remember Weird Science... or more specifically, Kelly LeBrock in Weird Science!

Though it's generally considered one of John Hughes' "lesser" movies, the bonkers sci-fi comedy has built up a bit of a cult following over the years, and it's set to be re-released on 4K UHD Blu-ray from Arrow Films Video for the first time next week.

The 1985 feature is based on the 1951 pre-Code comic "Made of the Future" by Al Feldstein, and focuses on a pair of bullied teens (played by Anthony Michael Hall and Ilan Mitchell-Smith) who decide to create their perfect woman using a computer and some hacked U.S. Government files (don't ask).

The stunning Lisa (LeBrock) materializes, and sets out to teach the boys how to stand up for themselves and win the hearts of their school crushes.

Critics weren't kind at the time, but audiences were a little more appreciative of the movie's juvenile, somewhat anarchic tone, and the late Bill Paxton's turn as one of the teen's older brothers is worth watching for alone.

Check out some new cover art below.

"Teen misfits Gary (Anthony Michael Hall) and Wyatt (Ilan Mitchell-Smith) design their ideal woman on a computer, and a freak electrical accident brings her to life in the form of the lovely, superhuman Lisa (Kelly LeBrock). She outfits Gary and Wyatt in cool clothes, surprises them with a Porsche and helps them stand up to jerks Ian (Robert Downey Jr.) and Max (Robert Rusler). But, all the while, the boys must hide Lisa's existence from Chet (Bill Paxton), Wyatt's nightmare of a big brother."

How pertinent could a remake of this be with dudes having AI “girlfriends” these days?

@mountainman - I imagine they make the perfect woman, but then immediately puts on a pant suit and leaves. She then becomes the ceo of a fortune 500 company growing old, fat, and accomplished while reading a news story about how her two "creators" were rejected at prom and committed life delete. She then goes out with a big smile on her face.

This film is a good candidate for a remake. Especially in the age of AI.

The movie that when I was a kid I had always expected it to be dirtier than it actually was.

@philinterrupted - I remember only the tv show and how that turned me on. But at that age, even a little breeze would suffice 😅

Funny! I cannot think of a drop dead gorgeous actress that could portray Lisa. Maybe that era of the model type actress is gone.

@Forthas - in this era? It would be an overly sexualized dude, because beautiful women and the male gaze is le bad.

@Forthas - They are all on non-dairy diets today and, consequently, the fullness just isn't there anymore. When Kelly did Weird Science, there was no botox or lip filler. What you saw was natural.

@GeneralZod - Since my postI have thought of one actress who could pull it off.

@Forthas - it would be very different from her Peggy Carter role for certain. I think she would knock it out of the park, it would be fun. The hard part is casting the teenage boys and Chet.
Forthas
Forthas - 8/15/2023, 7:57 PM
@Timerider - I would get that guy who plays Billy Batson' disabled step brother and the guy that plays Hawk in Kobta Kai. For Chet I would get someone like that kid that bullied Clark Kent in Man of Steel.

Nice! Love this movie!!!
They tried to do a remake where it’s girls making a man but the producers quickly realized it probably wouldn’t be a hit having two 15 year old girls make a 30 year old male sex toy. 🤷‍♂️🤣🤣🤣

I love this movie, and I have been actively trying to create a Kelly Lebrock clone using similar techniques for almost 20 years now. I’m getting close I think….

@CaptainMexico - You're making a Kelly clone too? Sounds like you're closer than I am. All I've gotten so far is a left foot. But it's a sexy sexy left foot, and as it turns out, that's all I need.

@StSteven -

I got so wasted once that I thought I had created this chick finally. I'm not sure of all the details, but strangely my dog hid from me for about the next 6 months.

StSteven
StSteven - 8/15/2023, 5:28 PM
@DocSpock - Well, one way to find out would have been to show your dog some panties, leg warmers, and a cut-off sweatshirt and if she tucks her tail between her legs and whines, I think you have your answer. And if you're not totally sure, you could have tried saying the phrase "Chips, dips, chains, and whips" and if your dog runs and hides under the bed for a week, I think that seals it. I just offering these suggestions in case you happen to pick up the 4K disc and a case of tequila...
DocSpock
DocSpock - 8/15/2023, 6:32 PM
@StSteven -

Those tequila bottles should have a warning label for this exact reason.

StSteven
StSteven - 8/15/2023, 7:09 PM
@DocSpock - Oh, they do (trust me I know), it's just that the warnings are on the inside of the label on the bottle in very small print and near the bottom of the label. So that by the time you finally get to the label you've already recorded and posted the TicTok video of your dog dressed up in the afore mentioned panties, leg warmers, and cut-off sweatshirt with you moving the dog's mouth to say "What would you little maniacs like to do first?" in Kelly's voice. Trust me I know.

@DocSpock - Funny, because I also knew that that Columbian stuff that my wife bought was going to be trouble. BUT, at least every room in my house has a fresh coat of paint now. Or, 3 actually. Oh, wait, you said "coffee". Nevermind...

Ilan Mitchell-Smith kinda stunk, but otherwise, very much a classic. Did a good job of depicting the stereotypical teenage horndogs of 80s sex comedies as pathetically inept in the face of a woman with sexual agency. A nice companion piece to Gleaming Spires' "Are You Ready For the Sex Girls," a perfect song about how terrifying it would be if a dozen horny women in bikinis showed up to your house unannounced.
