Josh Hartnett Starring in Gunslinger Movie

Variety reports that Hartnett will play a gun-fighter in a post-apocalyptic world...a plot that is strikingly similar to Stephen King's The Gunslinger from his Dark Tower series.

A recent report has Josh Hartnett signed on to star in Gunslinger, a revenge story about a man (Hartnett) and his brother who seek retribution against the gang that killed their parents in a post-apocalyptic America. Chris Nahon (Blood: THe Last Vampire) is directing.

If the title and plot sound familiar to you, perhaps you're thinking of author Stephen King's novel The Gunslinger, which is part of his incredibly popular Dark Tower series, or the comic book of the same name, published by Marvel Comics. King's plot concerns a gunslinger's quest to catch "the man in black" in a post-apocalyptic or alternate time-line world.

Gunslinger producer Mark Williams said this about the movie:

"This story takes a unique and startling look at what might happen when the lawlessness of the Old West returns...but with better weapons."

If the two projects are related in any way, Variety does not give any indication of this. Is this a blatent rip-off of King's masterpiece? Is King possibly involved in the project? Will there be legal action? CBM fans want to know!

Simple enough story to be done well. Would like to read more on this. Not a whole of comic movies with good gun fighting in it that I can think of so this would be neat. Unless Spawn is to be redone.... Only a matter of time. C'mon, McFarlane.

I can't imagine it's not related to Stephen King's works, but then...why not mention his name or his books in the announcement? Either their PR person is going to get fired or there's a lawsuit brewing...

I hope it's based on the Stephen King works!!!

NNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

i just read the comic and the first 4 novels. NNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

keep the original story. it was EPIC!!!!!

jake has to be in it. HAS TO!!! HE IS PLOT PIVITAL.

JOSH LOOKS ENOUGH LIKE HIM TO PASS. Hugh Jackman would be better.

and didn't king give the right to Gunslinger - Dark Tower to J.J. Abrams with Christian Bale in the lead to Play Roland of Gilead????? (for the high price of 19 dollars)

@bladeshad: That's why I posted this here. From Variety's article, it sounds like a completely different movie altogether, though with striking similarities. Is it a rip-off? Did King hate it and remove his name from it? What's the dealio?

this is all insanity, if this bullshit story has got anything to do with dark tower, some ones head will roll.

but josh harnett i think would make a really good roland, he was wicked im 30 days of night,

so where is this coming from forget this crap, make the seven books into film, cast josh , leave the comics how they are!

man when i saw this i actually fort he had been cast as roland and i was like "jack pot" and now i feel terribly suicidal.

@rolanddeschain19: yeah harnet has a good voice and kinda sorta the look.... the hat and missing fingers and scruff will help alot. so i wasn't too against the casting when i thought it was roland either.

@dellamorte1872: and as for eddie casting i think that guy from csi: NY with the glass's and the heavy new york accent would be better.

@ brent: yeah but it screams rip off. and i'm fine with a rip off. so long as i get the real thing soon. a tv show would be sick. HBO all the way.

hey since this is marvel does that mean DISNEY owns rights to the Dark Tower???

HHHMMMMMM??? any one think of that???

roland enters a door and walks in to mickey talking with donald. they freak he blows there heads off and walks back threw the door.

@bladeshad: could it be that the dark tower actually is in the centre of disney land. can you imagine if that was the ending to the saga, your mikey and donald twist, i means the books got madder and madder as they went so i would not have been surprised.

If it's not staying true to source material, I feel for those of you who have read it and want it to not be changed. It makes me scared to read it and watch this progress into a squidless movie.

i think some one should change the art on gunslinger born cover to the disney land castle. and put mickey ears on roland. that would be gold LOL

JJ Abrams has already bought the rights to Stephen King's Dark Tower series to make them into movies! Are we already
forgetting that post several weeks back?

This will probably have nothing to do with the Dark Tower series. It will only be similar or alike.

@ Bladeshad...good picks! But I think I would like to see Vigo Mortenson as Roland. All your other picks are pretty good in my opinion. I just like Vigo because he has the chops, he takes roles seriously and he actually has a horse ranch and rides regularly. So he's already kind of a cowboy! It works perfectly. :)

Harnett might be able to play a younger Roland from Wizard and Glass, or may be capable to play someone like Cuthbert or Eddie...

Personally I'd prefer a gruff Roland. Viggo is a good choice, Clive Owen might be capable...

I saw J.H in London at a play "Rain Man" (character Charlie Babbitt) and was amazing, also he's surprising in "Mozart and the Whale"(character with Asperger's syndrome ) as manipulative boy in "O" and in movies as August and Lucky Number Slevin really excellent perfomances

I found news though they share the same title is not an adaptation of the similarly plotted first entry to Stephen King's The Dark Tower series, The Gunslinger

The film called GUNSLINGER is instead a "revenge-driven tale set in the near future in the snowy wasteland of a post-apocalyptic America" to be directed by BLOOD:THE LAST VAMPIRE helmer Chris Nahon. Hartnett will play one of two brothers who set out to avenge their parents' death at the hand of a vicious gang

there is no way this is for the dark tower. a cowboy in a post apocalyptic world does NOT equal the gunslinger. there is SOOOOOOOOOOOO much more going on than that. the synopsis sounds nothing like Dark Tower. and if this guy is ROland, i'll NEVER see this movie. but JJ Abrams is making it, so i know it'll be good...if it ever gets made.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 9/14/2009, 7:37 AM
jesus everyone...marvel does not own the dark tower, nor are they the creators. they made a deal with king to make comics of the dark tower...thats it. thats why robin furth writes them, she's like King's right hand. so no, disney will have nothing to do with this.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 9/14/2009, 7:40 AM
@Roland

at least there's ONE person in this article that has their head screwed on straight! this sounds nothing like dark tower...and with JJ abrams making it, it won't veer from the actual story.

and yes...Viggo Mortensen for roland. even he did apparently call it quits last week
