GODZILLA x KONG: THE NEW EMPIRE Tops KONG: SKULL ISLAND To Become MonsterVerse's Highest-Grossing Movie

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire may have received mixed reviews (on Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a disappointing 54% score), but it now sits atop the MonsterVerse as the franchise's most successful movie yet.

Despite being released on Digital platforms last month, the movie rampaged to a mighty $570 million at the global box office this weekend. As a result, it's surpassed Kong: Skull Island as the franchise's most successful entry to date.

With a surprisingly frugal $135 million budget - the lowest in the MonsterVerse's history - there's no denying that Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is a box office hit. Grossing $196 million domestically and $371.3 million internationally, Warner Bros. and Legendary have netted a tidy profit at a time theaters are struggling due to relatively few hit movies being released.

Here's how each MonsterVerse movie compares in terms of box office revenue:

Godzilla (2014) - $525 million

Kong: Skull Island (2017) - $569 million

Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) - $387 million

Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) - $470 million

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024) - $570 million

"This is certainly an exciting result," Mary Parent, Chairman of Worldwide Production for Legendary, recently said of The New Empire's success. "We are in a good position to continue the journey, but let’s see how Godzilla x Kong unfolds. These are early days, but we are certainly feeling good."

Warner Bros. Domestic President of Production Jeff Goldstein was similarly pleased, adding, "It’s unusual for any movie that’s the fourth or fifth sequel to do this kind of business. In the past Godzilla drew a more general audience. This was a spectacular movie, a spectacular marketing campaign and a spectacular date."

Parent later noted, "Everyone made this film out of love. And we spent less on this movie than any of the other film."

Last week, the news broke that Grant Sputore will direct the Godzilla x Kong sequel in place of Adam Wingard from a script by David Callaham. Breaking his silence on the news, the filmmaker said, "Well this is (literal) HUGE news. It’s also a huge honour. I’ve been a giant monster fan for as long as I’ve been a fan of anything."

"[To] follow in the footsteps of the other incredible directors who’ve had their turn in the MonsterVerse is a dream come true. Can’t thank Legendary enough for this Titan sized opportunity."

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is still playing in theaters.

Fun movie. Deserves it. Anyone that thinks this movie is too cartoony has apparently never watched the old stuff. 🤣🤷‍♂️

@AnthonyVonGeek - I am a huge Godzilla fan. I thought it was too cartoony. Just because the old stuff had it doesn’t mean it works today.

But that’s my opinion. And I guess it worked cause it made money.

Sigh.

Wish the verse had stuck with the horror tone of Godzilla 2014.

@AnthonyVonGeek - considering they had that scene with gravity going all weird, should have pulled out that move

@JobinJ - monarch and 2014 definitely hold those spots for me. The suspense and thrill were phenomenal and those two entries are my favorite.

With that said I did have a good time watching Godzilla vs Kong. Godzilla X Kong New Empire was ok, but yeah they could’ve toned it down a bit.

@JobinJ - I love the old and new stuff. It’s all fun for me. I will admit the serious tone of 2014 was an amazing welcome but I like that the fights are more brighter now so we can see them better.

@JobinJ - I mean minus one took him down with bubbles and air mattresses and 2 plot armor survivors that would make the son from War of the worlds blush, so let’s not pretend it’s not inherent in the golden child’s version of this character also

@dracula - I would have busted out laughing and cheering like I did when King stuck the ax down Godzillas mouth in GvK like he did with the tree in the old original.

@AnthonyVonGeek - at some point we need godzilla’s victory dance. Now that they slimmed him down, should be doable

I haven't seen this one yet but Minus One was not only heads and tails better than any Godzilla movie I have ever seen, but better than most movies of this genre in general.
MotherGooseUPus
MotherGooseUPus - 6/10/2024, 2:41 PM
@Baf - they are COMPLETELY different movies. Minus One is a fantastic movie that has Godzilla in it, but its a Huge metaphor for Japan.

This movie is just pure popcorn flick. Lots of plot holes, decent evil monsters and some great action.
SATW42
SATW42 - 6/10/2024, 2:51 PM
@MotherGooseUPus - minus one is essentially the kaiju version of “elevated horror”, bubbles, air mattresses, completely unbelievable survivors, every character is a 2 dimensional anime archetype.

I loved it by the way, but I hate this “Godzilla vs long is dumb fun while minus one is cinema.” Argument

MotherGooseUPus - 6/10/2024, 2:55 PM
@SATW42 - not sure i understand what your saying about the characters in Minus One? i understood their motivations, feelings, what they were going through etc... they weren't there just to be there... they had a purpose that sold the story.

idk, maybe i misunderstood your comment

I hope the movie studios learn that you don’t have to spend $250m + to make a blockbuster. I mean a budget of $135m and most of this was CGI.

Fun movie

Kind of weird to not have a human threat, considering how late skar king shows up.

Some nice visual storytelling

Hopefully they give Godzilla more to do in the next one, he was more of an afterthought here than he was in the last movie

Great to see Mothra again (although how did her caccoon get to hollow earth, it was in a water fall last time we saw it)

We need some solo movies

Godzilla 3

Kong 2

A Mothra movie

GodZilla vs Gigan
Kong vs Baragon
Mothra vs Batra

Get the rights to Gamera
MotherGooseUPus
MotherGooseUPus - 6/10/2024, 2:42 PM
@dracula - The Hollow Earth Mothra is the "mother" to the one on Earth. Theres an article about it somewhere.
I agree and want to see another solo Godzilla adventure and then him fight some of his other villians like Gigan, Megalon, Biollante etc....

Gamera would be wild to see

It gave us less human shit and more monster stuff than the previous film so it was an improvement. Wish they got writers who were more interested in making a good film though.

Would rank the monsterverse

Godzilla
Kong Skull Island
Godzilla VS Kong
Godzilla X Kong The New Empire
Godzilla King of The Monsters

Good for Godzilla in general between this movie making bank and Minus One being a critical hit. Happy to be a Godzilla fan.

I STILL don't get the hate for King of the Monsters. What don't people like? It was an all out monster battle between Godzilla and King Ghidorah with some stupid humans in the mix. Only thing i didnt like was millie bobbie brown, cuz shes awful, and they killed serezwa.

Anyways, hope to see a more serious Godzilla movie vs Space Godzilla/Biollante/Destroyah someday... and STOP putting Godzilla as second fiddle; not cool

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was Great. I saw it twice at the theater was my favorite MonsterVerse's movie Highest-Grossing Movie than Kong: Skull Island is a very close second.

Godzilla (2014) - 524M (160M Budget) \ $204M profit
Godzilla: King of the Monsters - 387M (170M Budget) \ $47Mloss
Kong: Skull Island - 568M (185M Budget) \ $198M profit
Godzilla vs. Kong - 470M (180M Budget) \ $110 profit
Godzilla X Kong - 567M (130M Budget) \ $307M profit

I can't believe that GxK only cost 307M but if true that's a really neat way they've cut costs!
An overall profit of 772M is very strong for such a slow-burn franchise, hats off to Legendary (because I know Warner isn't responsible here). Honestly Legendary could work better solo, they've got to self finance the movies anyway. WB only does the distrib investment
