Variety is reporting that Michael Dougherty has officially signed on to direct Legendary & Warner Bros.' upcoming Godzilla sequel, which is due out in 2019.

Dougherty initially signed on to the project with Zach Shields back in October of last year as just a screenwriter, but after seeing all the work he put into the film's script, Legendary offered him a chance to direct as well.

The Godzilla sequel, which is rumored to be titled Godzilla: King of Monsters, is expected to arrive in theaters March 22, 2019, followed by a crossover for the ages with Godzilla vs. Kong, which is expected to hit the following summer on May 29, 2020.

Dougherty's past credits include the critically acclaimed horror films Trick 'r Treat and Krampus, two features he both wrote and directed. He also has experience in the comic book movie genre, having worked on the screenplays for X-Men 2Superman Returns, and X-Men: Apocalypse. His next project will be a Trick 'r Treat sequel before he tackles the king of monsters.

I wasn't a huge fan of the first one. The third act was pretty fun, but the rest was just so dry and boring without any characters to get attached to. AND ONLY 8 MINUTES OF GODZILLA!

Hopefully this next one will be better.

@MrDandy - If you'd seen Godzilla movies, you'd know that 8 minutes of Godzilla time is incredibly gracious compared to every other movie. I mean [frick], the director probably thought he was putting too much in.

I thought that the next movie was titled "Godzilla: King of Monsters."

Cool. Really looking forward to seeing it. Really liked the last one. Seems like a good choice for a director.

I liked Krampus (despite some issues I had with some of it's decisions).

Godzilla set the table very well...now it's time to prepare the food.

@IronGenesis - That uncle should have had a grenade in his arsenal as a gag...that later played into the ending where kid tells Krampus that he had a gift for him. Krampus opens it up, and he sees the grenade. At which point, the kid smiles and says "Merry Christmas...mother f*cker!"

I read this entire article and some of the comments thinking "thats good, krampus was fun, but why are they announcing a director for a sequel when the first movie is coming out in a few months?".
King Kong. I was thinking King Kong. Damn it.
