PACIFIC RIM UPRISING: Early Box Office Projections Bring Bad News For The Kaiju Sequel

Long-range projections have Pacific Rim Uprising pulling in pretty modest numbers in its opening weekend at the domestic box office. According to BoxOffice Pro, the sequel to Guillermo del Toro's 2013 monsters vs robots epic will be in the $20 million range during its first three days in theatres.

Pacific Rim Uprising will be released on March 22, between the releases of two other action movies: Tomb Raider and Ready Player One. This stiff springtime competition is projected to cut into Uprising's box office gross.

The first Pacific Rim grossed over $37 million in its opening weekend, below expectations for a movie that cost $190 million to make. However, the international box office helped make the movie profitable, as more than three-quarters of its $411 million worldwide gross came from outside North America.

Pacific Rim Uprising was partly filmed in China, and the film was made with the international audience in mind. The studio hopes to make a large chunk of its profits in China as well.

@MUTO123 - So, essentially what he's saying if you read between the lines is this:

We are focusing on the movies that will end Phase 3. And this deal will not impact the movies we've already announced, which are the upcoming 5 (or 7 if you include the announced Guardians 3 and Spidey 2). Who is to say what will happen after phase 3 ends. Could the Fox acquisition affect Phase 4? Maybe. But that will be years away, and the films we've announced are our main attention.

Its only hope is and always has been China and Asia. Not many people wanted a Pacific Rim 2 (specially without Del Toro)

@Oskir - Yeah, I wanted a sequel...

However without Del Toro, and returning cast/main characters from the first film, plus it being too many years since the first film? Eh.... I'm not really excited like I would have been if the first one the first two things, and came out at a reasonable time.

@PrimitiveMan - I wanted a sequel too. But this movie really looks like a basic Transformers movie with more colors. It doesn't look like a Pacific Rim movie at all.

But I will still see that

To be honest, domestic box office doesn't matter for this film. It didn't matter for the first film. So to focus on the domestic BO for Uprising doesn't make sense. What matters is the world wide box office.

Pacrim was good. It was exactly what it needed to be and nothing more. Robots vs monsters is NEVER a bad thing.
