Neil Blomkamp Talks District 9 Sequel's And Prequel's!

The director who brought us the best Sci-Fi Film of 2009 talks about his future plans for the District 9 Franchise!

This from Chud.com:

"Even though he wrote District 9 with no sequel in mind, Blomkamp admits that he has “an inclination of an idea” for one and would definitely be interested in directing the sequel...

...which would again be set in South Africa and star Sharlto Copley as Wikus van der Merwe again. “Does Wikus become human again?” is one of the plot issues which Blomkamp feels can be explored in a possible sequel."

That would be cool as we would see Christopher come back to Earth with his alien friends and kick hell out of all the puny humans experimenting on and selling cat food to the aliens. Old people might not mind but seriously Cat Food!!!

When Neil Blomkamp was asked whether Christopher would return to Earth in three years to help Wikus. Bloomkamp states “I do have ideas rattling around in my head, and weirdly enough they're not to do with what you just said,” Blomkamp said. “They're different. But, who knows?”

That's not to say Neil Blomkamp wouldn't turn back the clock, so to speak. Apparently Blomkamp finds van der Merwe’s character to be “hilarious". District 9 star Sharlto Copley played van der Merwe and has also said he would love to play a younger version of the character.

Blomkamp also acknowledged the Peter Jackson would be involved in any future Prawn battles.

Still though I think the money shot is in the future. Let's see what kind of Hell on Earth Christopher would reign down in 3 years. That would be cool.

Ugh this makes me nervous. The reason District 9 was so good was because of the story. I think if they did a sequal it would turn into just another aliens vs. humans action/special effects show. Been there, done that. 9 rocked...leave it alone.

Boogie138 - 8/28/2009, 9:54 AM
yeah guys this doesn't need any more flicks, the charm of it was the sense of a self contained story you get thrust into and got to learn about the world it takes place in as the story progresses. doing anything else may kill the magic

case in point: anyone see the movie Cube? great little flick, a sequel AND prequel done up and sucked the life outta the whole shabang. wish i never bothered to watch those so the orginal still held the aura it did when i first saw it.

can some one invent a mental easer?

I don't think a prequel would be the best idea, but they should do a sequel. If it's half as good as D9 then I'm happy.

DISTRICT 9 = Was one of the best flicks I've seen this year, next to Watchmen. INglorious Bastards was not, and will never be a masterpiece...punt intended. I know what he was tryna do....and I thought the movie practically dropped after the BAR SCENE.

Totally, up for District 9 sequel. That would be awesome.

InTylerWeTrust - 8/28/2009, 10:40 AM
I don't know how they will top themselves over District 9 though. D9 was the best movie of 2009, and one of the best movies I've seen in years, it'll be hard to follow that up with a worthy sequel...

i only want to see a sequel/prequel if he strongly believes he could do just as good, if not better. loved district 9, one of my all time faves,

woo hoo!

@ Tyler

Exactly.I liked Underworld...but part 2 was okay. The prequel was "meh" only thing that kept me from hating it was that "kate beckinsale" invisioned the whole prequel....if they didnt have her character at the end of the movie sitting on top of the balcony invisioning the prequel...it wouldnt have made sense...would of been a piece of crap.

Now I hear their making a fourth installment? lol oh gawd...I just hope its not shit. I know eaxctly what you mean....but than again this guy seems like hell take his time...kind alike how nolan does...and hes also working with peter jackson so...i dunno if their is a sequel i hope its awesome.

What Sirprize said!

A sequel isn't needed but if done right i would certainly like to see what happens when Chris comes back in 3 years. I mean by that time Wickus would probably be completely adjusted to life as a prawn! He may not want to change back.

just actually got back from watching it. l know, FINALLY. it was as awesome as everyone said. i think a sequel could definitely be done right. and your onto something there ror. that would be a good way to go. they dont need a mass invasion battle. it can be done on the small scale. with the emotion of wickus choosing sides etc.......it was an awesome movie though.
TheREALHumanTorch
TheREALHumanTorch - 8/28/2009, 1:05 PM
i think they should not do a sequel...i think this movie was awesome, but the hype was too big for them to replicate...i believe a sequel will fail due to fan reactions citing it wasn't as good as the first or whatnot...the only one who in recent years that made a kick ass movie and outdid himself on the sequel was Nolan with Dark Knight...the guy is the greatest director out there..just saying
LEEE777
LEEE777 - 8/28/2009, 1:07 PM
It was no WATCHMEN, but it was the second best movie this year! ; )
TheREALHumanTorch
TheREALHumanTorch - 8/28/2009, 1:16 PM
now this was movie of the year in the original idea department...watchmen was the movie of the year in the best action movie department...both movies are different genres on their own. Watchmen was a kick ass movie but Dark Knight beats out Watchmen...nuff said, but on Snyder...i think he should revive the X Men franchise...if anyone could do it...it'd be him.
LEEE777
LEEE777 - 8/28/2009, 1:33 PM
Torch @ I agree on most of that buddy, good stuff!

But personally i don't think TDK (great as it is) holds a candle to WATCHMEN! But different ppl, different tastes!

Still both being DC an WB should count for something lol.

I love your idea for rebooting the X-franchise though, big time! Start with X-MEN FIRST CLASS! ; )

TheREALHumanTorch
TheREALHumanTorch - 8/28/2009, 1:46 PM
in what way does Watchmen beat out TDK? TDK is the most realistic of the two and had a well balance of action, drama, a few comdic moments from the cast...but to me TDK is the ish...i agree to each their own so don't take this as me lashing out or bitching at you..i just wanna better understand your pov
but no to the first class idea...start fresh...reboot the xmen...

I would love to see a sequal to this movie. I felt that this story was incomplete and left at a cliffhanger at the end!! So looking forward to it!!! Keep up the good work Neil!

CorndogBurglar - 8/28/2009, 2:09 PM
@ torch

TDK had a LOT of silly holes in it, that made me go, "oh come on". watchmen didn't. its that easy as far as i'm concerned!
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 8/28/2009, 2:12 PM
@ torch

example, when batman saves rachel from falling out of the sky scraper, not only did they both survive that giant fall and land on a car, but the joker was still up there, with all his henchmen taken down. 1. why didn't the rest of the party goers jump him? 2. why didn't batman feel it would be necessary to go back up and get him?? instead nolan just ended the scene. that could have been the end of the movie right there!

or two face shooting the driver of that car, then the car wrecks, with him in the back, both people die, but he was fine. then him and batman, at the end, both fall the same distance, but batman survives, yet two face dies. fine, batman has armor, but two face survived a speeding car accident, but not a relatively short fall??

I prefer Watchmen over TDK, but it's very slight. Both are incredible movies. However, District 9 beats both of them.

I want a sequel... with a prequel novel
TheREALHumanTorch
TheREALHumanTorch - 8/28/2009, 2:39 PM
i value your views on the movies and what makes one better in your oppinion...but when going against the genius of alan moore...it's hard for nolan and his crew to not have minor holes...i mean all snyder did on his own was add a few more graphic scenes and change the alien ending...other than that it was moores story all the way through
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 8/28/2009, 2:59 PM

i hear ya, its just that as far as movies go, i thought watchmen was better. i still love both though! their first and second as far as best comic movies go!!!!

well to each their own right...your number 1 and 2 are in different order than mine and vise versa....

It's hard to beat Alan Moore, that's fer sure! But Nolan and his brother did an amazing job with the Dark Knight crime-drama Bat-man movie!

But my best comic book movie order is: Watchmen, The Dark Knight, and Spiderman 2.
TheREALHumanTorch
TheREALHumanTorch - 8/28/2009, 3:25 PM
my best is TDK, Watchmen, IronMan, Inc Hulk

District 9 is so authentic in it's vision that a prequel or sequel would be hard to beat it! But bring it on anyway! What a Wonderful Movie!

Agreed. And if the sequel is half as good as the original it will still blow away most movies out there like shit I Joe.

i would love to see a sequel, but i think they should just leave it the way it is.
Phoenix9109
Phoenix9109 - 8/29/2009, 11:22 AM
I'm still of the opinion that this movie will only remain as good as it is if it is left alone. Any prequel/sequel would just ruin it, in my opinion.
And, just to be clear, I loved the movie and thought that it was the best movie of the year (out of the movies I've seen so far.)
