MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS: ONCE & ALWAYS Brings Back Original Cast Members For Netflix Reunion Special

The Power Rangers franchise is celebrating its 30-year anniversary in 2023, and members of the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers cast will return for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always, a new scripted special on Netflix.

Entertainment Weekly (via SFFGazette.com) reports that David Yost is back as Billy, the Blue Ranger, alongside Walter Emanuel Jones (Black Ranger Zack), Catherine Sutherland (Pink Ranger Kat), Steve Cardenas (Red Ranger Rocky), Karan Ashley (Yellow Ranger Aisha), and Johnny Yong Bosch (Black Ranger Adam).

Yost is the longest-serving original Ranger as he played Billy in 200 episodes across four seasons. He calls the reunion "amazing," adding, "It was such a surreal experience to be on the set of Power Rangers again after 28 years."

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always sees the heroes come face to face with a familiar threat from the past. In the midst of a global crisis, they are called on once again to be the heroes the world needs. Inspired by the legendary mantra from the franchise 'Once a Ranger, Always a Ranger,' Once & Always reminds everyone when you become a Ranger, you are always a part of the Ranger family and always welcome.

Other cast members include Barbara Goodson (Rita Repulsa), Richard Horvitz (Alpha 5), and franchise newcomer Charlie Kersh as Minh, the daughter of the original Yellow Ranger Trini. Thuy Trang played her but passed away in 2001 following a car accident. It's unclear whether Green Ranger Tommy actor Jason David Frank will be honoured in any way after he died in 2022.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always will premiere on Netflix on April 19, and we hope to have a trailer to share with you soon.

In the meantime, you can check out a new behind-the-scenes featurette and stills below.

Ah a good old trip down memory lane.

I wonder how they're going to honour JDF? I just hope they're not going to capitalise of his death.

I've heard rumours though he had some issues with Saban in the past and walked away from the role. I just hope this production and his suicide aren't linked, that would be a shame.

Hyped to see original Black Ranger back!

@UniqNo - he had a rough last 2 years , step daughter died, divorce , just everyday stress on top of it all

@UniqNo - This was probably shot prior to his death. At least the weather in NZ looks more late-summer-ish than recent.

He did "retire" from the role but as Shimmy said he probably had that significant fallout with Saban over his very gruesome past few years.

It's all just conjecture on my part here:
He was very loyal to Saban in the years prior to his death, he refused to take part in the fan-film because he felt he owed Saban his loyalty for being brought back so often and then when push came to shove and they made that movie all he got was a cameo role.
That must have hurt and felt like a betrayal of his loyalty.
He kept the torch aflame by being part of a LOT of specials, promotional material and all he ultimately got in the movie was a blink and you miss it cameo.

He only did one special after the movie and it seemed like that special was made to calm the relationship between him and Saban but nevertheless the missed opportunity to revive his career through a big nostalgic movie appearance was too much.
At least I would have felt burned by my employer at that point.

@ShimmyShimmyYA - Yeah, I saw that too. He did have it hard.

But I also rememeber him having difficulties with Saban in general and even got kicked out of the 2017 movie premiere screening because he was trying to film his cameo, or somthing along those lines.

Either way I just hope they honour him well. Something compareable to Chadwick's passing within Wakanda Forever would be cool. JDF was hella appreciated on the fan and convention circuis

@Blergh - Yeah, that's along the lines of what I've read before. I know that's not the only thing that he had going on, but it would be a shame if this production had anything to do with it.

@UniqNo - think this was all shot before his death, so anything would be coincidental

According to Catherine Sutherland every MMPR ranger was asked back. JDF chose to turn it down

Conquistador - 1/18/2023, 11:36 AM
@dracula - ah ok,

But it's still seems not long ago it happened, and they're already promoting this...seems a little too soon, especially if he's not in it.

I dunno, I'd like to think they/he tried to work it out especially as some of the OG's like Billy and Zack are back. But I guess him also just refusing will have to be accepted by the fans.

@UniqNo - it was a divorce that was coming. His daughter is letting it all out

Is it going to be a movie length special or shorter?
Either way I'll watch the sh*t out of this! Can't wait for my generation of Rangers to return, I grew up on this and Legend of Tir'Na'Nog.

Lets go! Love this...

How are they going to bring the Green Ranger back here without Tommy - JDF? Did he secretly film something here? he declined it but going to be interesting.

Hopefully a ton of other easter eggs to look forward too.

SonOfAGif - 1/18/2023, 12:23 PM
@CaptainDC - They might do what they did with the Power Rangers Beast Morphers episode that brought back Jason. Just have the other rangers appear with zero voice lines and no morphing. It was only Jason and he called upon the Mighty Morphin Rangers to help but they were already in their suits.
MosquitoFarmer
MosquitoFarmer - 1/18/2023, 11:17 AM
I don't care how old they are, I bet they got giddy as ever getting to put those suits on again and be handed a morpher.
Blergh
Blergh - 1/18/2023, 11:27 AM
@MosquitoFarmer - I would watch a whole series just with the old actors. The older I got the less I warmed to the younger casts (obvious reason being nostalgia fading and seeing the seams in the show).
But as a dose of Nostalgia-meth I'll watch everything with the old Rangers in it (with the exception of Austin St. John).

Is it too much to ask for an Amy Jo Johnson cameo?
RitoRevolto
RitoRevolto - 1/18/2023, 11:36 AM
@Marikina - Yes lol. She's been dodging anything to do with Power Rangers for a while now.
TheVandalore
TheVandalore - 1/18/2023, 11:53 AM
@Marikina - it's rare to get her to even do conventions. When she does its to promote something else or cuz she needs the work.
TheVandalore
TheVandalore - 1/18/2023, 11:31 AM
As sad as I am considering JDF, and that most of the original 5 aren't in this... I'm probably more jazzed and nostalgic for this than I am anything else coming soon.
SonOfAGif
SonOfAGif - 1/18/2023, 12:25 PM
@TheVandalore - I'm more bummed that AJJ didn't agree. She is the only original who has never returned to the role. Jason returned for Forever Red and the Beast Morphers episode. Adam has returned plenty of times along with Tommy. But Kimberly has never came back.
TheVandalore
TheVandalore - 1/18/2023, 9:02 PM
@SonOfAGif - she came back for Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie and also cameoed with Tommy in the reboot movie. But that's it.

Too bad no Jason or Kimberly

Obviously ASJ cant leave the country right now but wonder why Amy jo turned it down

@dracula - I just watched the BTS trailer... looks like the Green Ranger (masked up) is there. So hoping either he did shoot something and they're keeping that a suprise, or they reuse some old voice over work or somthing. 🤞🏽

@dracula - said she didn’t like what was offered whatever that means

This is going to be special in so many ways. Really sucks Thuy Trang and Jason David Frank won't be a part of it.

@RitoRevolto - a new character they are introducing is to be trini’s daughter

Loved Walter as Zack, but to me he will ALWAYS be Harlan Band in the CRIMINALLY underrated and best kids Sci fi show of the 90s, the one and only SPACE CASES!

The theme song goes hard! This show was so good. I revisit it online every couple years. Probably will watch it again soon. Really good team chemistry and character arcs and the Sci fi stuff was cheesy but passable and even kinda cool back then.

I was 7 years old when this premiered and my whole world was rocked. I was a huge Batman and Spider-Man fan at the time, but MMPR was world changing to me.

I’m 36 now and yeah…I’m going to be watching this I’m a sucker and I’ll admit it.

Interesting to note that there is a Green Ranger in this footage.

It would be quite the story if it’s revealed JDF did indeed film this and they just wanted to keep it a surprise.

I never understood why this goofy crap was so popular with anyone but kids under the age of 12.

I am glad it makes many people happy, but I don't get it.

@DocSpock - I've never understood why people DIDN'T GET IT!

Anyone above 12, it's probably nostalgia / something they grew up with.

12 & below, what's not to love, typical Male stuff..... Fighting, Monsters, Robots, Boys starting to realise girls (Let's not lie & say 6, 7 & 8 yhear olds weren't crushing on AJJ back in the day), what's not to love?!

No different to liking all the superhero sh*t we grew up with & still like now.

@DocSpock - Nostalgia dude. This is was what Saturday shows and cartoons were built around. Before the youtube, streaming and the internet boom in general this was the stuff kids use to talk and socialise about. It means nothing watching it for the first time now but back then kids generally felt that they were also part of why it became such a big deal. I rememeber seeing the first movie in cinema and was blown away...as a kid... you just can't recreate that feeling today with anything else.

You make good points. I was already too old when this thing came along.

@DocSpock - That's fair enough really so I get it from that point if you were older at the time.

I was 6 when it first aired here in the UK (Think we got it 2 months after it had first aired in tghe U.S.) & I just switched the channel & it must have came back from the ad break & it was the Yellow & Blue Rangers fighting the Putties near a pool in the episode & I was instantly hooked.

Christmas' '93, 94 & 95 were a nightmare for the family to say the least after discovering it.

Really excited about this, but wondering about the green ranger scenes they’ve filmed since JDF didn’t do the reunion, and well the suicide thing.

Of course, I'm gonna watch for the nostalgia factor & for Billy, Zack & Adam specifically.

Sucks there's no ASJ, AJJ or possibly JDF (Kinda hoping that MIGHT be him from those photos but not holding out hope).

I never really took to Adam, Rocky, Aisha or Kat, although I did warm to Adam eventually.

Intrigued / interested to see if SPA is linked to SPD somehow or someway (Surely if a Delta team exists then there would be an Alpha team also).
