Robert Rodriguez Says "Predators" will Ignore Predator 2 & AVP Films

Robert Rodriguez talks about his new movie and how it will ignore the other Predator and AVP films.

With "Predators" coming out next year Robert Rodriguez had this to say:

“You really need great characters so that the audience feels they’re going on this journey with them,” he told MTV’s Josh Horowitz. “And I like the double-meaning of the title—the predators, are you talking about the creatures or are you talking about this group of humans that are actually going in there against them. Are they going to kill each other off if there were no predators?”

Rodriguez confirmed that the story will be driven by an ensemble cast and won’t take place on Earth. And he’s also hoping his version will wash away the taint of the “Aliens vs. Predator” spin-offs.

“Maybe people will forget all the bad sequels and only think this one and the original exist,” he laughed.

The 1987 original, of course, featured the machine gun stylings of the current Governor of California. If McG could find a way to weave Arnold into May’s “Terminator Salvation,” could Rodriguez pull off the same feat for “Predators”?

“I don’t know,” he said. “That would be really great. We’ve talked about hopefully seeing if he could be involved if we see there’s a place in the script."

I can not wait until this film comes out but I am disappointed that he will be ignoring the other films.

Ozy out.

Nah i think this is the best way to go about it. The second movie was entertaining but there was nothing in it that would be needed to carry over to this one.

@ ror

thats tru, but i liked the 2nd as much as the first, and there really is just as much from the 2nd that could be used as the first. honestly, they could just do this movie without mentioning either of the first 2. don't forget, the 2nd had that group of government people that already knew about the preds, based on what happened in the 1st. so the 2nd actually tells us all that there is an organization in place to learn more about the preds! i'm not so sure ignoring the 2nd is the best way to go.

@CORNDOGBURGLAR-

I'll second everything you just said!!! The second film was class, there is no reason to ignore it.

Now, I know i'm in the extreme minority, but did you guys really think the 1st AVP was THAT bad. I kinda dug the human sacrifice for the predator training ground thing. And I thought it was cool that chick saved the one predators ass and he marked her so that his boys would know!

I thought we were about to get another Tomb Raider-esque female heroine......chick was hot too! lol.

Well, i do love cheesy films so....

Good call. That's just what I would do. A Predator movie indeed with the same type of creature, but not a sequel.

Keven, that's true. The first two do sort of work out independant of each other.

Thank god the first AVP was horrible, I didn't even care to try to watch the second. Seriously what the hell were they thinking?

Luffycapri, quit with the damn YouTube video, we get it, you have a channel congrats, now stop.

There are only three things that Predator 2 established in Predator mythos;

1. They come to hunt during heat spells on earth.

2. They revealed that they also hunt the xenomorphs (Aliens).

3. They've been coming to Earth, at least for a few centuries.

And most of that was at the end. YOU HAD TO WAIT for the end. Otherwise the movie was goofy. If Rodriguez can re-introduce those elements, re-imagining the franchise after the first Predator onward wouldn't bother me in the slightest. I think the biggest problems with the AVP's was that you didn't care who got wasted in it. You have to identify with a protagonist. There wasn't one person that was interesting.

Yes but the problem with him "re-imagining" the concept is his idea of "great characters" which consists of Rose McGowan.

Can/will you expound on that Shaman? I suppose you despise McGowan?

It was an ensemble cast and great conceptual stories that pushed it to success.

For example:
Shwarzeneggar
Bill Duke
Jesse Ventura
Carl Weathers
Sonny Landham

Likewise with the first two Alien movies...

Which is why fan-casting is sso popular on this site.

I liked Predator 2 I am not ashamed to say, I remember watching that film when I was much younger than I should have been and I'm as attached to it as I am Judge Dredd.

However, both AVP film sucked so much, you would have thought the concept would be hard to ruin but they really 'Resident Evil'ed them

@ kev

avp 2 was awesome!!! i'm glad i'm not the only one that liked it. the first was trash

in the 2nd pred movie, that group of guys that tried to capture the predator in that meat locker are government agents running a secret organization to investigate predators. the reason they know about the preds is because of what happened in the 1st pred movie. in fact they talk about those events when they're explaining it to danny glover. so yes, they are connected...

@ phinehas

did you really care about anyone getting waxed in the first pred movie?? i know i didn't. in fact i was hoping and waiting for it. this is a movie about an alien that hunts/kills humans. they are fodder from the get go and everyone knows it...

Just make a good movie Rodriguez and it wont [frick]ing matter if it is a reboot, requel, seboot, preboot or goddamn interquel (Im looking at you Fast & Furious), just let it be a good movie that will make the critics happy, us complimenting it a lot and a new trilogy develop out of it. But the main thing I will say is it will NEVER be better Predator 1, the movie that started it all off.

So hes ignoring predator 2 and the avp movies but apparently he's not ignoring ALIENS!!!! The true prequel to this movie.

CorndogBurglar:
Absolutely! I went to go see Arnie win! When Billy bought the farm, it was a disappointment. I felt Bill Dukes anger when his long time buddy got opened up like a can of tuna.

In AVP:R You could never really identify with anyone. In AVP, I almost identified with Sanaa Lathan until she came off like a cocky bitch.

Keven, that was one of the best scenes!!!

@ keven

did you notice that when the predator throws the disk at busey, it cuts him in half but his top half never falls to the ground. lol, his bottom half falls to the ground, but his top doesn't...too funny!!

also unrelated, in ALIENS, when the alien kills the chick pilot of the drop ship, her blood splatters all over the windshield, and then the wipers start smearing it all over...but she was INSIDE, the wipers are outside, so it wouldn't be able to spread the blood. ah ya gotta love the 80's

@ phinehas

i guess i just don't care too much about the humans of these movies, the stars are the preds and aliens, not the humans...i'm there to see aliens fight predators. i understand the point of needing humans in the mix, but they should be fodder. and the first avp being pg-13 is a joke. every pred and alien movie is rated R, and for good reason. (remember the gangsters doing handfulls of coke before they go fight the police in pred 2?? that kind of thing)i don't get why they would make a movie with BOTH aliens pg-13. they made up for that with avp 2. it was gory and messed up as hell!
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 8/19/2009, 9:24 PM
But thats the problem CDB. They are never going to make a movie with just Aliens or Predators so the human cast have to be likable or they are just an annoying distraction. As In the AVP movies. I really rooted for the marines in the first Predator. And even Glover and his idiot friends a bit in the 2nd. I was praying for everyone to dies in the AVp movies. Except maybe Lance Henrikkson!

I'm glad he's ignoring the AVP films; those things were crap IMHO. But why does he have to make a point by saying he will "ignore" Pred 2? Not much was carried over from Pred 1...so who cares if nothing carries over from pred 2?

Personally, I don't want to see anything carried over from ANY of the previous movies.

That means NO ARNOLD. Show me another great character like Dutch, but I don't want to see some crappy story trying to explain how Dutch ends up in outer space. That's just lame.
