Josh Wilding Reviews: STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS 3D (IMAX)

Star Trek Into Darkness has received a mixed response from some hardcore Trekkies, but after the jump, you can find my spoiler-free take on J.J. Abrams' last film before he heads to a galaxy far, far away for Star Wars Episode VII.

J.J. Abrams' reboot of Star Trek in 2009 introduced moviegoers to a reinvigorated and complex-continuity free crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise to great success. For that reason, it's not hard to understand why Star Trek Into Darkness is easily one of THE most highly anticipated sequels of the last few years. So, does it live up to what's come before? Well, it's about the same in the respect that it's neither better or worse than its predecessor. Instead, Star Trek Into Darkness is another solid instalment in the franchise and just a damn good sci-fi action flick.

This is a beautifully shot film, and at this point in his career, there can be no doubt that J.J. Abrams has a fantastic handle on action. Regardless of whether it's a fight sequence, a chase sequence or just a down and dirty fire fight, these are all brought to the life superbly by the director. The same can also be said for the screenplay. In lesser hands, Star Trek Into Darkness probably wouldn't have been anywhere near as good. It's not that there's anything wrong with the story or dialogue - they find a great blend of character moments and humour - but it neither brings anything hugely original or groundbreaking to the genre which will stick with you once the credits roll. The characters (well, most of them) and visuals certainly will, but the story won't. John Harrison is an integral part of the sequel and when his backstory is revealed, it really needed more than just a few sentences for us to be able to really relate to him. Thankfully, Benedict Cumberbatch is incredible and he steals every scene he's in. The actor is amazing as "John Harrison" and one can only hope that he one day gets to show his stuff in a comic book movie for a studio like Marvel.

When it comes to the rest of the cast, this movie once again belongs to Chris Pine (Kirk) and Zachary Quinto (Spock). Abrams gets some great emotion out of these two (don't be surprised if you find yourself quickly wiping away a tear every now and again) and their chemistry is great. The same can also be said for Zoe Saldana (Uhura), while Karl Urban (Bones), Simon Pegg (Scotty) and John Cho (Sulu) all deliver memorable supporting turns. In terms of the new additions to the cast, the beautiful Alice Eve (Carol) impresses and Peter Weller (Admiral Marcus) is also excellent.

Visually, you'll struggle to find a better looking film than Star Trek Into Darkness at the theatre this year. The special effects are top notch and accentuated by the IMAX format; it's without a doubt worth shelling out a few extra bucks to see the movie on one of the larger screens. The same can't be said for 3D however as this is yet another unimpressive and completely unnecessary conversion. There are perhaps only two very brief scenes which justify the format, but they most certainly do not justify the higher ticket price and uncomfortable glasses. Even J.J. Abrams didn't want to do the sequel in 3D and that says it all really. It's a quick job done in post in order for Paramount to make some extra cash. Regardless, it is otherwise flawless in terms of special effects and is topped off perfectly with Michael Giacchino's fantastic score.

Star Trek Into Darkness is a good film elevated to greatness by its director, cast and the brilliant Benedict Cumberbatch. If you weren't already looking forward to Star Wars Episode VII, you will be after seeing this...

@Beatnation Yeah right, cause it's totally cool to bash a movie that has nothing to do with the review.

I'll check it out, good review Josh!

Oh, well, typical marketing pre-release review, if you want to destroy the film because you are a naysayer, you say is garbage but if you are a superfan, you say it´s very good, and people must see it...boh.

So you give Star Trek Into Darkness a 4/5 but Ironman 3 gets a 5/5???? This is a joke right?

Really? For real? The "twist" alone at the end takes the film down at least 1 notch...

Wtf people complaining about his review. If you guys haven't noticed it yet...on top of the page, it says JOSH WILDING REVIEWS STAR TREK. Want to have a review that's better rated than Iron Man 3? Go write your own IM3 review and then your OWN Star Trek review and calm your tits.

That's right, I gave Iron Man 3 5/5 - try READING the review (those are links FYI) to find out why. Hint: I'm not someone who's going to cry themselves to sleep every night over the fact that one of THE lamest villains in comic book history - seems like everyone only became a fan when the twist was revealed - wasn't faithfully adapted in an otherwise great movie.

Azazel1
Azazel1 - 5/9/2013, 9:58 AM
Of course it is his review, and these are our opinions.

Lots of people seem to hold the opinion that giving IM3 a 5/5 rating is ridiculous, which it is

Laughable really...

Anyway, thanks for the comments about THIS review guys. :) It's a great movie, but I have a feeling that Star Wars Episode VII will be J.J. Abrams' sci-fi masterpiece (as long as the script is good of course).

I'm mad because people don't review movies the way I review them. Wha, wha, wha. Josh gave a great review and though I may be one of those people he's referring to about having gripes with the movie, I respect his opinion.

I will chastise myself and others for wanting the epicness of Wrath of Khan, Godfather, Aliens and Empire Strikes Back out of every sequel. That's not realistic but I definitely believe movies like that has spoiled us to what we expect from sequels. For instance, if Avengers 2 is anything less than groundbreaking it will be viewed as a failure by some.

I won't get this movie in my country until August 22 (that f*cking sucks btw), so I hope not to be spoiled by that time...BUT, given the IM3 case, that's not going to happen.

Although somewhat brief, another solid review @@Josh!

Am very much looking forward to this...if not for any other reason than to just see Benny Cumberpatch.

And @@Everyone turning this into an anti-IM3 article, please STFU. Just in the same way you let the infamous twist ruin your movie experience, your letting the movie ruin your CBM experience.

And I think I have found my new favorite phrase in "calm your tits."

The difference between Michael Bay and JJ Abrams? The difference is Bay makes straight up action movies and that's it. But Abrams makes action movies with working humor, good characters, and a good (not great) plot.

If any director changed Star Trek into an action series with humor, then it probably wouldn't be as good as Abrams Trek.

Abrams gets a lot of crap, but really he deserves credit for making people care about Star Trek again. Let's hope he can do the same for Star Wars.

Nice review there Josh…Im definitely going to see Star Trek, Abrams can do no wrongs in my eyes.

As for Iron Man 3…yeah I was just a bit letdown by the movie. My gripe is that it felt more like a buddy cop movie with some Iron man sprinkled in...also with a threat like the Extremis soldiers you wouldn’t think Shield would intervene? And HELLO, the POTUS was kidnapped, and Shield leaves Iron Man to solve this problem on his own?

Hey ParisSun-

What you just displayed is called RATIONAL THINKING. Something that's rarely demonstrated with most people on CBM.com.

And Josh-

I completely agree with you. People act like the Mandarin is some top tier, A-list villain like The Joker. HE'S NOT. Which is why most (including the Marvel films) have no problem with the change.

Anyway, loved the review. Really looking forward to STID!
