The following may not come as a surprise to many (given Michael Giacchino's frequent collaborations with director JJ Abrams), but the Oscar winning composer has officially confirmed that he'll orchestrate the score for the upcoming sequel, set to begin production next January and to be release sometime in 2013. Below is what Giacchino told Coming Soon while promoting the DVD/Blu-Ray release of Abrams' latest film, Super 8...

"Yes, I'll be back," Giacchino told ComingSoon.net last night at a home video release event for the duo's last collaboration, Super 8. "I'll be there just as soon as they finish it."

Giacchino is currently scoring Brad Bird's Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (Dec. 21) and Andrew Stanton's John Carter (March 9, 2012).

Are you glad that Giacchino is returning to score the Star Trek sequel? Sound off your thoughts below in the usual place.

The currently untitled Star Trek sequel is set to be released sometime in 2013.
